99.9 is born

Driving in to work and at 9am on the dot, HITS 99.9 was born.

Makes sense to start pushing people over now.

Pretty much Identical to 105.9.

If 105.9 is still on the air, what's the point?

Per FCC rules, 105.9 is to maintain current on air programming until the new owners take over. Besides, (As outsider pointed out) they are directing listeners of 105.9 over to the new frequency. I was wondering if they would be doing that...smart move

I take back everything bad I ever said about Saga! ;)

It would seem that if a company like Saga is picking this up, they see much longer term stable revenue potential with it. Albeit on a smaller signal. This is good. And it's probably something they have wanted to do for years to shoot back at CC.

I don't know how you can't make money off of it somehow, especially given that cities like Madison, Omaha, Wichita and even smaller cities in Ohio/Indiana and Illinois have been able to keep them around for years.

I look at it this way. When you have a very conservative radio conglomerate like Saga, launching a Rhythmic CHR in one of their longest standing markets, it only highlights and validates the argument you've had for years: Des Moines HAS changed and quite dramatically I might add!

I now FULLY believe that Des Moines will always have some sort of rhythmic station to choose from.

There is no turning back now!! 8)

Des Moines is actually a young adult 'destination' now. (Per Forbes ranking) and has a quickly growing start-up tech community and Bio-tech base along with the regional manufacturing and obviously HUGE Financial base. Add to that increasing quality of life, educational and entertainment options. This has all resulted in a much more diverse and growing community that will continue to thrive since it's becoming more resilient in terms of job options and population.

With this you get changing demo's that result in eventual media (radio & TV) reactions.

Also, one of the reasons that this format wasn't in the metro for so many years was that Citadel wouldn't give up Bob & Tom (companywide) to launch a CHR since CC owns Bob & Tom and any market they would dump it in for a CHR competitor to CC would cause CC to yank the show from Citadel (nationwide). From what I understand.

Young adults that have fairly decent earning power nowdays (20's and 30's) have a fondness for this format now. And I think thats the biggest thing. You have alot of posters that will come on various radio boards and claim that High Schoolers only listen to any CHR format. let me tell you, if that were the case in Des Moines or anywhere this format AND KKDM wouldn't exist. Plain and simple. They wouldn't exist anywhere.

That's been the case since Top 40 started in the 50s. Of course, it's never been true.

Some advertisers just won't advertise on stations they won't listen to, either. We have advertisers who will buy spots on our Hot AC but not on our country station because they don't like country. And some of the older advertisers are more comfortable with the country station, but don't like the Hot AC. They would prefer we play 50s and 60s music.

It's nice to see a new format in Des Moines. It's not a type of music I care for, but it certainly seems to be growing in popularity. I wonder if Saga will eventually move it to 93 or 104... like several years down the road... the demos on KIOA and KLTI have to be getting pretty old.

Well, if anything, it would depend on how well both KIOA and KLTI continue to perform in the Arbs, unless Cumulus makes a move.

Cumulus would probably do something sooner. But it begs another question. Over the next decade the Classic Hits format of KIOA will be hitting that next stride from 60-80's to maybe say...70's thru 90's?? Or 80's and 90's. It will be interesting by then to see how they break that format down. What would eventually happen? Plus with growth and demo trends and the continued change of radio, it could make things interesting. I can see this format moved to a bigger stick if KLTI or KIOA eventually really start to fall. Interestingly, KIOA's 'power ratios' aren't all that much higher than Rhythmic CHR.
