99 X Is Back

"The Cumulus Format Elves were busy over the weekend in Atlanta preparing for an early Christmas gift to local Alternative fans – the return of the legendary 99X is set to become official at 6am ET today. That familiar brand, which will focus on Classic Alternative hits originally made famous by the original 99X, has been rebuilt on the foundation of Classic Rock WNNX (Rock 100.5), which went dark late Friday night, but had been streaming The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" in a loop since then. The new format will also stream on 98.9 (WWWQ-HD2)."

Judging from their respective streams, it appears 98.9 and 100.5 are simulcasting.

I've yet to hear a single on-air mention of the availability of the programming at 100.5 FM, though. What I'm hearing sounds like a soft launch.

I also heard a really uninformative traffic report. The plug for JCPenney was lengthier than the actual traffic info.

It appears the "Grand Opening," if you will, at 100.5 will happen January 3. Station will likely be hostless until that date.

They doing the same thing as 91X in San Diego. That station also have a classic alternative lean with a lots of 80's new wave in the music mix. Maybe a trend for other struggeling alternatives in the country. Nostalgia: works. Smart move.
 
They still playing commercials which is odd because after all flips a commercial free period with 10.000 songs in a row or something is the normal way to go for a while. But I guess they starting with jocks on january 3th they doing it different.

Honestly, the fact they aren't doing the overplayed, trite and cliché "10,000 songs in a row" is pretty darn refreshing.

There is a lot of crossover between modern rock titles and modern AC/hot AC. A good chunk of the Seattle Sound, as a matter of fact. Plus Lenny Kravitz, RHCP and Sheryl Crow.

The adult hits station in my neck of the woods has Linkin Park, Evanescence and Staind as part of their (tiny) 2000s-era catalog (a competing hot AC played their songs when they were currents!!).

Classic rock was borne out of the same quandry that modern rock has been in for the past few years. Do you keep introducing new product like new wave or pop acts and borderline eschew the established artists, or do you fall back on a tried-and-true library with a reliable audience?

Stalwart AOR stations in the early 1980s all took different paths and, in some cases, left the format entirely (e.g., WPLJ, WMMS, WRIF, KLOS, KMET, WMMR and KSHE). WMMR, WRIF and KSHE in particular have thrived to the present day by relying on the classics.
