99 X Is Back

It's not even the history of failed formats outside of the different reiterations of 99X, 98.9 is such a compromised signal at this point that they could have it relay WWWQ-HD3 along with 97.9.

Hoping they remain on this 'classic alternative' path. 2010 to current alternative is horrible and a ratings loser.

Two questions: Will there be a rebrand? 100X? Also, will they get an initial ratings "bump" for the nostalgic types, then fade back into the ratings basement?

Here's what 99X played this morning, from roughly 8:15AM to 10AM.

8:15 AM
Simple Minds – Don’t You Forget About Me
Shawn Mullins – Lullaby
R.E.M. – What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?
The Psychedelic Furs – Pretty In Pink (soundtrack version)
Bush – Machinehead
The B-52’s – Love Shack
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication
Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus
Pearl Jam – Better Man
9AM
No Doubt – Just A Girl
The Smiths – How Soon I Now
Alanis Morissette – You Oughta Know
Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer
Foo Fighters – Everlong
The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
Soundgarden – Spoonman
INXS – Need You Tonight
Everclear – Santa Monica
Elvis Costello – Pump It Up
Nirvana – About A Girl (studio version)
The Smithereens – A Girl Like You
Ramones – I Wanna Be Sedated
10 AM
R.E.M. – Losing My Religion

Been listening since it launched this morning. I'd call it typical Classic Alternative. Familiar enough for mass appeal but enough songs that haven't been played in awhile to make it interesting enough. Mostly 80s and 90s, few Early 2000s mixed in. For the Alternative crowd that listened to the format before Nu Metal took over, it should be a favorite. For people that want to hear 80s and 90s music without the pop and other rock, should be fine. For people who want to hear a AAA feel, should be an option. For the people that listened to 99X during that era, it should be like hanging out with an old friend.

The Alternative format was initially female friendly to an extent. The end of the 90s when it started going more with Nu Metal alienated a lot people. It shouldn't be a shock to hear Alanis Morrissette, Matchbox Twenty, Sheryl Crow, Paula Cole, Goo Goo Dolls, etc on there because honestly, the Alternative format is where they got their start. So this could invite that audience that listened before Nu Metal back.

I think it remains "99X' with no real mention of "100.5 FM" in branding.

And why not? You can listen to the station online, on iHeart, on TuneIn, on Alexa, etc., as "99X". It's a case of where the legacy of a brand outweighs the accuracy of the brand by a country mile.

Now if us here in Boston can strip more of the Boston sports aspect of their show, and make it more general interest, I would advocate for them to syndicate to Atlanta. They've been a ratings hit here in mornings. To me, their best work is when they are running more general entertainment, over sports centric.

It's kind of like in New York, where "1010 WINS" is a huge brand. So now it's "1010 WINS on 92.3."

Just played Used Somebody from Kings of Leon. I think that was 2009? I was introduced to early Kings of Leon on 99x. No complaints here yet.

Use Somebody was late 2008, so it was after they went to HD2 and online. Probably the most recent song I've heard so far.

I've listened off and on since 8:00 AM Central. It sounds good. Separation of artists could be a bit better, but it otherwise sounds fine. Maybe it's just perception, but I feel like I've heard Nirvana about every hour to 90 mins.

Hopefully, 99X has staying power. Seems like a mix like this could burn quickly, but classic rock has, for the most part, played the same 400 songs for the last 40 years and been successful. Whatever the case, it has to be better than Rock 100.5, which has been a cellar dweller since it signed on.

The "99X" name was used in other markets. It was the on-air brand for an iHeart Cleveland Alternative station, on W256BT/WMMS HD2, for several years before it became "Alt 99.1." It is now a BIN (Black Information Network) affiliate.

As for the Atlanta 99X, I am glad to see the name back on a bigger frequency. Going Classic Alternative is a good way to go.

For some reason, this reminds me of when the original 99X stared their web presence. One of the original radio stations to stream if I remember right. Their original web address was quite unique too : www.com/99x
