990 as a Newser

This is in response to N1WVQ's musing on 990 in the 550 call thread. 990? Traffic/weather together on the 9's. I'd try to get either ABC, which it ran as WLKW, or CNN. I'd follow the KYW/WBZ clock the rest of the time. Heads/sports at the quarter-hours, business at :25 and :55. Fresh anchor /story rewrite at top/bottom of hour. I'd do in depth, as KYW does with its Reporter's Roundup ,at 12:30 and 3:30. Also segments like Ask the Mayor and Ask The Governor.

I'd also talk to Hall about getting back the WLKW call from 1450, and putting the WWRI call there.

Yeah... but with what money? And we're not just talking staff and promotion, we're talking a total studio buildout and major major renovations to the tx site.

The biggest hindrance to all news is the sheer cost of the staff it takes to run a station like that. I just don't see anyone with the money coming in and deciding to take the multi-million dollar risk on a station that hasn't even had moderate success in over 20 years.

Additionally, while all-news is a great format, I wouldn't see it working in Prov. Rhode Islanders are creatures of habit, and they totally love WPRO. I think getting listeners to trust the news of an unproven station would be tricky.

Is the WALE going all news and teaming up with ABC 6?

Check this out and let the speculation begin.
They've been fantasizing about doing that for years. 2 years ago they relayed some of Channel 6's audio. By the way, not much sounds worse than T.V. audio on radio.
