99X Atlanta Returns to FM

January 25th, 2008 was a sad day in the history of Atlanta radio. On that day, popular Modern Rocker 99X was moved off its 99.7 FM frequency and jettisoned to HD Radio. The 99.7 FM frequency was taken over by sister station Q100, while a new station, Rock 100.5, was launched on Q100's old 100.5 FM frequency.

For 15 months thereafter, 99X continued to stream online at 99X.com. Fans of the station, angered by the change, signed a petition via Facebook to bring 99X back. Their prayers were answered on April 17th, 2009. Cumulus acquired the 97.9 FM frequency, a 250-watt translator in the Atlanta area. At precisely 9:09 AM EST, 99X made its triumphant return to the Atlanta airwaves on 97.9 FM. Its HD Radio equivalent remained intact with the launch.

Here is a 24 minute-long clip of the stunting and relaunch of 99X on 97.9 FM.
