99X expands playlist (again)

I remember back in April, 99X had begun to add more "active rock" like tracks to their playlist like Metallica and some other harder rock. Now... (starting about a week ago) 99X has begun to slightly expand their alternative playlist. They have now started to play some U2, Prodigy, Fatboyslim, and R-E-M. They have also been catching up with the newer alternative music by adding some new Sleeper Agent, Chevelle, and MGMT. Also, they have a new weekender/fill in guy who goes by the name of "Adam." Has anyone else noticed this yet?

You can barely pick up the X here in Forsyth County.......

so I don't care!

Glad they are finally playing stuff like MGMT, although they don't play it very often... and bands like The Strokes, Bravery, MGMT, etc have more than one song! They need to keep expanding and add more current indie rock.

As soon as Dave-FM added the classic rock back in (a few weeks ago I think?), 99X moved back towards lighter Indie-Alternative and dropped most of the Active Rock stuff - they also have a lot of 90s Alt/Rock added back in, probably to win over former Dave listeners at the younger end of that spectrum

That's a pretty good observation. The more I listen, the more I am agreeing with you. I just heard "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. That's a more Dave fm song.

Don't mean to brag or anything but I think 99X reads my posts on here! They still have a ways to go but they have taken at least a step to sound like a true alternative station. ;D

I'm not familiar with the Boston station but I will check it out. I am much more familiar with the San Diego station. What makes FM94.9 in San Diego stand out is two reasons:

1 - The variety. 99X only plays a select few songs from artist. If you look at the playlist at 949, you will see what I am talking about.

2- The surprises. 95% of the songs are from the 90's, 2K and today but occasionally, they sneak in Ziggy Stardust from David Bowie or The Who. This is rare, but about every 4 hours, they sneak in a deep classic cut such as those. Now that I think about it, none of the classic rock stations even play Ziggy Stardust!

As you said above, The Strokes has more than two songs. What about older 30 seconds to Mars, and Helena by My Chem. Florence & The Machine, Interpol, Two Door Cinema Club, Older Kings of Leon, PJ Harvey, more variety and deeper cuts that were still hits from The Pumpkins (Mayonnaise - When's the last time you heard that?). How about Arcade Fire, deeper cuts from White Stripes, Silversun Pickups (they had more hits than Lazy Eye and Panic Room), My Morning Jacket, Bloc Party.... List goes on and on and on...

I'm convinced 99x reads this. The just played the new one from Florence and the Machines.

One more thing, I really enjoy Johnny Cash's Hurt but I hope (pray) 99x does not ruin it by playing to death. I also hope they play some other good ones from Cash including his remake of Rusty Cage (originally a Soundgarden song).

If they were still tryinh to sound how they were now with the new music mixed in with the old, they should check out HFS 97.5 in Boston.

???

Boston's two Alternative stations are WBOS and WFNX...

I think WHFS was an Alternative station in Baltimore/Washington DC back in the 90s

I'm not sure deeper cuts and non-singles are such a good idea in Atlanta, just cause it's a Southern city and people like what's familiar - but who knows...

I don't mean get rid of the familiar songs but play the songs that were once familiar that seems to have fallen off the map but at the same time still playing the current top songs of the month. Your right, an "indie" station by definition would not do well in the south or any other part of the country (except for maybe LA), BUT the problem with Atlanta radio is the repeats. Atlanta radio has restricted playlists that excludes anything other than what is "hot" today.

Q100 is a perfect example. Obviously, it's a top 40 station so it's job is to play the hell out of the top 40 songs today but they seem to have completely forgot about the songs that were big hits just 5 years ago. What ever happened to that nice duet with Chris Brown and that other chick (can't remember her name). Breath??

Raise your hand if you think Adel's Someone Like You is a beautiful song. Ok, now raise your hand if your sick and tired of hearing it! 105.7, last weekend, played that song every 90 minutes. That is ridiculous, but what is worse is that in a year or two from now, you will be having to rip it off online because you will not be able to find a radio station in Atlanta that will play the song.

So yes, I believe any and all stations should stick with a playlist that plays the familiar songs but don't forget about the songs that were once played on the radio but might not have been as big of a hit.

Sorry I forgot to specify that it is an HD-2 station. It's WWMX-HD2. Still pretty good. They take some deep cuts into most of the bands that were stated earlier. In fact, for every band they play. They almost seem to have a song that's not a single by them.

YEAP! Found it. Just reviewed the "previous played" page and while I would agree, it's a good alternative station, I'd still have to say that FM94/9 has it beat.

I can see where you'd say that. FM 949 is a top class alternative station. It sets a good example on what a good alternative station should be like. Did you read "the mission" page? That's what I call quality.

Yes and I can't agree more. I've thought perhaps DAVE could lean in that direction quicker than 99x simply because DAVE is ran by CBS radio. CBS tends to be a little more liberal and less "by the books", if you will, when it comes to running a station. Now that DAVE has made an adjustment by dropping the little alternative they had for more of a classic rock theme, I now doubt that.

The current "WHFS" (Baltimore, not Boston) is indeed housed on an HD2 of a full-power station, but has a 99X/Atlanta-style ride on a translator at 97.5.

WWMX is the Hot AC in Baltimore - I think you're mixing up Baltimore with Boston ;)
