99X GIG!

Not to mention, if you laughed at my last post, then I can work anywhere that you get a diary. I'm a funny guy. ;D

No, the death and taxes line was not funny. Cliche, not funny.

The guy's actually right. Plenty of jocks have gotten major market morning gigs with only four years under their belts. Fred Toucher, Jimmy Baron, Axel, Tracy St. George, Jamie Massey, Jenn Hobby, all had less than four years doing radio before moving to 99X/Q100.

With the exception of Toucher, none of those talents were Marquee names when they started on a morning show. I don't think TSG has ever done mornings at Q, Jamie Massey is a traffic girl for god sakes, and Axel has done way more than 4 years before moving to mornings. Remember he started out nights, then afternoons, now mornings (and only as a fill-in). Jenn Hobby is 4th mic and had other morning show experience in Atlanta (at the Beat). JB started out as mainly an off the mic producer on the Morning X, and had some considerable experience producing before getting the X gig.

Doesn't matter. Radio is starving for talent right now and if you've got a good show you can get a gig in Market 10 with four years experience, especially at an alternative station. This is a business about talent, not about work history, and there are definitely a handful of decent jocks doing morning shows in their mid-20's who have been on for 2-3 years in medium sized markets that could easily get a gig in Atlanta. Now, that's not to say they'll be GOOD (more morning shows suck than are good as a rule), but they're good enough to get a gig.

Screw that. Radio jocks are a dime a dozen. As much experience and talent you THINK you got someone always beats you. 4 years exp huh? Decent yes but what about those jocks with 10 years? 15? and so on? When appling you have to let the station know what it is exactly that you can bring to the table. If your talent is exceptional 4 years would cut it but your airchecks would have to be something that stands out from the rest.

I've seen people with 20 years experience that should have left the building a long time ago. Bottom line is a programmer with a good head on their shoulders can hear whether the applicant has their act together. Time is a hang up left to those who wear their years of service like a badge of honor. Some people can pick up on this, edit your words get your point across quick, throw in some wit and less is more stuff. It's the being yourself with no hang-ups and over the top mentality that has some scratching their heads.

Time is a hang up.

Experience is a benefit.

That said, early on in Star's history, their midday person stepped into the gig right out of college.

all this talk about time makes me wonder what my life woulda been like had I had a normal job all my life.

I think 4 years could be enough. I think the thing you are not looking at is that it is Cumulus. They will want to spend as little as possible on talent. So that may lend it self to someone young who will work for less to be in a major market. I bet whoever gets the gig will be making a big market jump. That doesn't mean they don't have talent but that they were the "Lowest Bidder"

That's exactly the point I was making. Cumulus isn't going hire anyone with vast experience because they'll require decent money, and that's not in the Cumulus playbook.

I heard from an unreliable source that the new monring show is David Paul and Fat Kid.

Fat Kid isn't even in this Market anymore.

Not to be negative to the guy starting the thread or anything, but I've been in radio for 11 years, and I'm not even considering applying. I know where I stand in this business, and morning drive in a top-10...not me...not yet.

mchatham, don't forget that you do have some experience in morning drive, with "Waking Up in the Gutter." I think that would compete with what X has going on right now.

;D ;D ;D

Man, I about fell out of my chair when I read that. Sometimes, I really wish I could go back to my college radio days. Life wasn't so hectic back then.

So who are you anyway? Send me a pm or an e-mail!

I feel real close to this gig right now. There may be a chance all the haters could eat their words that I wasn't qualified with my 4 years. When OM's don't call you right away, I've learned that could be a good thing. For me, I think I'm totally rad and can take whatever this Roberts guy has to hand out man. If he's mean to me, then I'll be like dude you're totally being mean and there's no need for that. Then If he's nice, I'll totally be like "hey man, you're being really cool through this whole thing". I'm just excited to actually get a CALL, or an EMAIL, or a LETTER to tell me what's up. I know that I could totally blow this thing up and make it bigger than it could ever be with the current ATL talent. 4 years experience talking poopy whispers in the house. Stepping up the attack on the ones who feel they're entitled to the spot.

I'm honestly not sure whether this is all a joke or not! Anyone else as clueless as I am about Mr. Icky?

there's some guys in jersey who would be perfect! matt and fuzz! they were on wdha just outside of nyc and did very well in the ratings but got the shaft with new managers. would love to hear those guys anywhere that has a web stream (ups is slow this time of year lol)

I was thinking the samething ;D

<<<<I'm honestly not sure whether this is all a joke or not! Anyone else as clueless as I am about Mr. Icky?>>>>

Or.... did you mean as clueless as Ickywho/whatever, the like cool, man dude might die waiting for that call, e-mail or letter?
Four years may turn into 40.

This kid has some MAJOR denial issues.

Hell, I applied for the morning sports gig back in February when it came "open," and my rejection letter just came in the mail last week!

Four years experience? For a major market morning gig?

There are folks out there with DECADES of solid work behind them that won't even get a listen. I don't know the 99x management, and they may be fine people, but I highly doubt Icky's "package" ever ever made it into the CD player.
