99X News

We obviously know that Jimmy Baron is auditioning at 929 DAVE-FM. Here is some other news.

Former host of The Steve Show, Steve Craig has been given a negotiation window from Cumulus until his contract ends. He can talk to whomever he wants to before August 1 and Cumulus has the right to match any offer he receives. I hear Steve is looking for PD power as opposed to on-air only. Could we be in competition for the same job?

Former PD Leslie Fram couldn’t resist adding herself to the Matt Pinfield morning show on WRXP-FM in New York. That took less than a month! I have always felt that the PD should not be on the air in a major market. It is very Fair Hope, AL.

Lastly, Steven Duane Barnes benched 350lb and “juiced” his pecs at Main Event Gym.

This just in… Steven Duane Barnes has just sued me.

Gotta say it was strange and a little sad to see the tiny 99X.com tent set up along side the route of the Peachtree Road Race this past Friday. Considering how "big" they used to go with their promotion and street presence (as one of the guys trying to compete with their never-empty promotional budget pockets) it was different to see them so small. Gotta give 'em credit for being there at all.

Yes, props to 99X for having a tent on the side walk of Peachtree during the road race. I was glad to see them there. I couldn't resist but to run by the Rock 100.5 tent and tell them how much they stink. All the guys just looked at me in utter disbelief. Just wish the Dickey brothers would have been there so I could say it to their faces. I still cannot understand why the Dickeys took 99X off the FM airwaves, especially before the PPM ratings system is implemented here in Atlanta.

Don't blame the Dickeys, blame Clear Channel for 86ing 96 Rock and starting this set of dominoes falling...Project STILL has not gotten the ratings of either 96 Rock or Buzz. If CC had left 96 Rock alone (better yet: fixed it like the Dickeys did for them), you'd still have 99Xcrement, albeit probably as "100.5X".

It also didn't help that Z90Dave and 99Xcrement were constantly battling each other for the smallest share of a 100k station...

"Don't blame the Dickeys, blame Clear Channel ..."

Question: When 99X exited the airways on January 25, 2008, was it the Dickeys, owners of Cumulus and 99x, or Clear Channel who shut down the station?

Just wondering, because the last time I checked, Clear Channel did not and has not owned 99x in its FM format or its current Web format.

I see the connection you're trying to make with the demise of 96 Rock, but the only correlation I see between 96 Rock and Cumulus is that TRG used to work at 96 Rock and the Dickeys were dumb enough to hire them. TRG were fired from 96 Rock because of some dumb (and lame, I might add) stunt in a men's restroom and not for any other reason. CC realized continuing to have TRG on board was too much of a liability. It's just a matter of time before TRG messes things up at 100.5 because they think they're being funny or cutting edge (whatever ::) and the Dickey brothers regret their decision. At least that's what I'm hoping will eventually happen (fingers crossed).

Now, again, why is Clear Channel responsible for shutting down 99X earlier this year?

They thought TRG would make more money for them. Could it be that simple? Yeah, it could.

And were they right? Yea, probably

CC flipped a decent AOR station with decent ratings (both could have been better; Rock100.5 has proven that with the former and is TBD with the latter) to an "active rock" format that competed heavily with 99X (which had been suffering declining ratings for a while, anyway).

This left a void in the Atlanta radio spectrum when it came to classic and heritage AOR. Cumulus saw an opening and jumped on it; it also was convenient that they had an up-and-coming CHR station that would be cost-beneficial on a larger signal. So, they moved Q100 to 99X's signal, and filled the AOR void with Rock 100.5. Too bad that 99X got the axe; however, they had the worst ratings of the three (96 Rock, Q100, 99X), and competed closely with Project (and Dave, another 100kW 2.0 share station, for that matter), which was making things worse for them.

If CC had stuck with 96 Rock/AOR on 96.1, 99X would have not likely been the odd man out.

Be optimistic--there's going to be another 100k signal open in the ATL soon. No bull.

The Fish? The Beat? The River? I am so confused. ???

"X" Gets the square. People forget that it is all about $. Well, yes that "public service" thing....but it is about buxka Nothing more nothing less. So yes, CC started the tumble. Yes, that simple.

Just for the record, Fairhope, AL is a coastal town in Baldwin County, aka God's Country. It is located a bit South of Daphne, Al, point of origination of another past Atlanta josh dickey who moved on to Bigger and Better Things. Fair Hope is what nine year olds have when desiring a carnival to visit their town.
Now if I was a betting man, I would wager that a heavy play will be made to hire Mr. Craig in New York. Whether or not sufficient walrus pelts wil be offered is open to speculation. Steve can only come out ahead either way.

LibrayGirlAtl meet Inside Your Head, Inside Your Head meet LibraryGirlAtl. The grammar is too good to be IYH but perhaps you two should date.

Actually I believe it was the lack of ratings and a horrible succession of morning shows. Sean Demery played a part in this. Him leaving opened up the opportunity to find yet another morning show. And who was sitting there but TRG who are as close to ratings gold as they were going to find. Check the first book name one other show that could have been brought and beaten their first book. 3rd in targeted men I believe. I wouldn't keep the fingers crossed for two long they might cramp up waiting for them to screw-up. Neither time the infraction was too horrible and the Dickeys would probably be more lenient. They were fns of the show.

I think The Regular Guys have lived and learned. I understand they made a decision not to even touch the Six Flags incident.

I think that they have made the show cleaner without making it cleaner, if you know what I mean. Watch out for the seven dirty words, don't be graphic, let the pros handle the innuendo (not unpredictable callers or ditzy pr0n star guests), be ready and generous with the dump button, rotate your code words, and stay away from hot button topics, i.e., playing "Another One Bites The Dust" after another kid shows up murdered (Mr. Ross Brittain, don't worry--we all KNOW that didn't really happen-just a joke).

Fan Recommendation: Go have a beer or three with Mark McCain to talk shop about how to push the limits but not break them back in the good old days.

I'd love Steve to play PD for a while. We might actually get some decent music on the radio.....oh, I forgot, nobody listens to radio for music anymore. Silly me.

Listening to 99x.com right now. How's this internet, HD-radio only brand really doing? Are the jocks live or are they voicetracking? At least if Regular Guys get fired and Rock 100.5 flops, they have a brand they can pop on 100.5 ... except "99x @ 100.5" would be a little confusing.

And if you know where Fairhope is, then you are a true Alabamaian. Roll Tide to you, sir! :)

Ever body who followed SCCA racing in The Day knows where Fairhope is. Because Dr. R.C. 'Bud' Macon used to race a Lotus Superamerica which had FAIRHOPE across the front in foot high letters with some success. People would congregate around the car and ask "Where the hell is Fairhope???" and get a South Alabama geography lesson.
