99x silently introduces new program?

I just happened to turn on 99x around lunch time and realized they were playing Flock of Seagulls which I thought was odd as it seems every time I turn on 99x these days, I'm hearing some active rock band or an occasional 90's alt song. I continued to listen and then heard Kinard refer to it as "The Retro Show" which kind of surprised me.

I wonder if they realized that killing the station followed by a resurrection with a play list that, in some cases, seems like a less alternative play list than it does a "try to please everyone, but, y'know...stay 'cool' and not pop-ish" play list.

We've gone around this topic a bunch of times...do they try to evolve into the 21 century 99x, try to play it safe, or reach back to it's glory days with the formula that "worked" (even though there's very little in the way of anything resembling the original staff that can help make those decisions)?

I"m going to give the show a fiar listen and try not to compare it to it's predecessor...considering that quite a bit of Steve Craig's personal collection made up the Retroplex play list, I'm already expecting that the music will be safe.....but they did play Detachable Penis...let's hear any other station in Atlanta play that one.

The one thing that has always amazed me about Alternative and (especially!) AAA stations is their staunch resistance towards including much 1970s and 1980s alt (classic punk/New Wave, classic MTV, etc.) in their playlists (save for a few Jann Wenner-approved, cognoscenti-rock, hipster, organic/bluesy tracks), or at best relegating them to "retro" shows. But even B98.5 can do that much.

If it's a desire to stay relatively current with the playlist instead of playing stuff going on 30 years old, I can understand. Is that what it is?

Or am I just lamenting the age gap that seems to have pushed a lot of baby-buster, older-GenXer music off the dial (too new/loud for oldies/classic rock stations, too old/soft for active/alt rock stations, and too commercial/cheesy/poppy for the AAA poseur stations)?

92.9 Radio Atlanta would not have that issue.

I can't understand why radio stations waste airplay on Flock of Seagulls and not Graham Parker.

If "99X at 97.9" introduced a new show and no one was listening, would it still make a sound?
The same sound a new program makes at WGST.

BTW, I hit 1500 posts. Where is the plaque and the upgrade to the good bathroom at Radio-Info.

I'm still waiting for the gift you guys are giving me for hitting 2,000. Or are you just taking me to dinner?

And Neil, you're the Bobby Bowden of Radio-Info. They've taken a number of your posts out of the record books, posts under the names of The Other Neil and The Real Other Neil.

Is that like aiming a TV camera at a TV displaying the camera's signal to get video feedback? Or is it tricks like this that got you over 7000 posts ;)
