99X Withdrawals

It makes for bland boring radio. Chris is the one who steered the station to butt rock world.
Toucher's show started off on the wrong foot, but it was choked by the sale of the station.

Wrong again. You assume Chris Williams steered the station without the approval or acquiescence of Leslie or Susquehanna. She should have been off the air during Toucher's run, and again...none of these things have any relation to Cumulus. They simply put the thing out of its misery. There is no denying, however, 99X's legacy, 90s talent and if there were any justice, Jimmy Baron would be working in this market.

Screw Barnes, though.

/please don't sue me, Barnes.

I'd say that Leslie has quite a bit of power at the station considering her role in the music industry in GA. They would have been fools to not give her air time if she wanted it...and it seems she did.

Oh well. I still have my fond memories of 99x and an awesome playlist that came from years of listening to them. I'm good.

Leslie had zero control... read Sean's blog explaining everything

http://seandemery.wordpress.com/

thx 4 linking that. they shouldve let sean be pd

it says "After Q100 was added to the Susquehanna Atlanta family, Leslie was upped to oversee both Q100 and 99X and Chr' does that mean leslie is still boss of q100 ?

No, Leslie is gone, and I'm not sure when she was removed from Q100, but it wasn't recently, that's been over for awhile.

Like Sean said in the blog and other have stated here, 99x was dead long before Cumulus took over. Susquehanna ran it into the ground, the ratings were toast. Cumulus bought it and they tried to change things to pump life into it, but it didn't matter what they did, alternative music lost its edge and popularity lately and it had no shot. The managers there now didn't even know the frequencies would be flipped until early January to keep it under wraps; the move and direction of Rock 100.5 was very calculated in the time up to its' launch, and the right people are in place to make sure it succeeds with the demographic. Only time will tell.

i dont get how every1 says 99x got no ratings. EVERY1 i know and i mean every1 listened to 99x. this at a big college in ga i went till couple months ago. ya maybe i cant type but im not so stupid like u all think. 99x is what we had on all the time all the dorms an at all the parties so how can they say no 1 was listening. thats thousands rite there. no way dave or project get better ratings then 99x did

It is so funny to sit here and watch all the finger pointing over the death of 99X. Nobody was at fault for it's death other than a seriously incorrect measuring basic(Arbitron) and the hegemony of a format. There is no doubt that someone will fire up a commercial alternative station back up in Atlanta in two years and it will kill. The lines became all blurred with alternative and it crushed itself everwhere under it's own weight. What 18 year old kid wants to hear 'their' music on sis' pop station? 99X provided us with an amazing heritage and set the foundations for what will happen next. I am proud to have been a listener of that station, and a coworker. Let's not bury this forum over mud slinging. Let's use it for a discussion about what is really going on in radio, and what we all as a community can do to help it. If I want vitrol, I can always hop over to the Velvet Rope. We're smarter than that. Right?

#1 reason why - 99x listeners only used cell phones not home phone.
Good ole Arbitron only uses phone books for survey people

Sean's blog article was very good, I don't see any "mud slinging" there or this thread.
I remember somthing changing even back to the late nineties with 99X and SD did a good job of explaining it. In 1997 I wondered why Toenut wasn't played, they would have been the quintessential 99X band and I found it telling that they weren't embedded in 99X, in 1992 they certainley would have been heavily featured.
Sean's point about the domination of 'maleness' is very true. For some years it's been rare to hear any female vocals at all on any rock station in Atlanta and that's a loss and makes radio drab. It's a mystery why that's happened. Any ideas?

There was meeting of radio execs, PD's, and MD's and they all decided to go to a more active rock list. It was a poor decision nationwide.

You just fake being ignorant right? It's not just the phone isssue. It is the music industry as a whole. There are very few breakthrough artist and the originality and conviction has been sucked out of most of the new music. 99x was just a shadow of it's former self from attitude, promotion and the playlist. It ran it's couarse.

RTibbs, why did you feel the need to respond to my post? There could be some interesting discussion on this topic and it stinks to have pointless sarcasm instead.
My point about Toenut was that 99X had gotten lazy and strayed from being a strong part of the community before alternative had run its course. There were still bands that were gaining audiences outside of mainstream radio just like whem 99X had strarted but they didn't seem to seek them out anymore. That might be more significant than a music style running its course.

Arbitron numbers determine how much a station can bill for advertising sales. 99x billing was way down, Q100 was on the way up and could bill more on the 99.7 signal. Radio is still a business and if they can't make money, no one can get paid. My hope was that PPM would have saved 99x, but the Dickey's didn't know how to program alternative rock. They know how to program a rock station, so that is why Rock 100.5 was born.

I think pointing out one obscure band with such confidence that 99x should have been playing them is a little self-serving. I also happen to disagree with your timeline. I think in 1997 99x was still doing a very good job musically. I see it more as around 2000 when things started to decline.

Now if they change their name to Toejam you might be able to sneak them on Dave HD2 Roots channel. They like jam bands over there.

RTIBBS stop stalking my posts u perv

deadmann thx 4 explaining

I was recently listening to a tape of 99x from 1993, and I can say the following.

99x played Toenut in 1993.

Not sure that means anything, but there it is.
