99X's Steve Craig contract renewed

Steve Craig has gotten a two-year renewal at 99X, according to John Dickey, head of programming for Cumulus Media. Craig has been at 99X since the beginning and is now assistant program director/music director under Leslie. (I guess that's basically Jay Herron's old job.) He promised a new morning show soon, hopefully by next week.

So much for a format change. So where do they go from here. After the Buzz or the Dave audience?

Awesome! I've enjoyed Steve since the beginning. Excellent news!

Just because they are keeping Steve doesn't necessarily mean the will or will not make a format change. This falls right in line with what we know. Cumulus is traditionally very cheap and as far as midday jocks go, Steve doesn't make a ton of money. Also, he is pretty vanilla when it comes to style. Please don't take this as bashing Steve, I'm not at all. I think his does a great job on his show, and people seem to like him. I'm just saying, that I wouldn't really consider him niched out in the modern rock/alternative vein. I think he could do his thing in just about any format, except, of course, urban. I don;t know if that Indiana Jones hat would fly in that demo.... :)

And most radio contracts have a 90 day out. Companies don't do many guaranteed contracts these days. So they could pay him for 3 months and be done.

Steve's had an incredible run for a midday guy. So good for him... although I think he's boring. I know that middays is supposed to be the "bridge" from mornings to afternoons, but throw in a LITTLE personality. But hey, more power to him, he's definitely solid, and VERY good at executing his style...

Rodney, does this mean you're on speaking terms with the 99x people again? ;)

Will he continue to do the "keep talking while turning his face awy from the microphone" bit so his voice trails offeach time he speaks???? Actually, like the guy on air alot, but that can get annoying.

OMG bro, you NAILED it! I knew there was something annoying about his delivery. He does that ALL the time!

I like his show too but that is the kind of technique that's off-putting. Too cool for school.
