A 30 Second trip down Houston radio memory lane

Admit it... you listen to Stevens & Pruett! :D

I miss that show. Good times with the Radio Gawds.

Mark Stevens is a living wonder to me. He seems to be ageless, or he's discovered a fountain of youth somewhere. Plastic surgery is more probable.

I first encountered him when I worked at KFJZ in Fort Worth in 1973. He did the afternoon drive as "Markie Baby", and he had been there for at least several years then. His wife and young teenage daughter often delivered him to the station just in time for his show.

He was as "straight arrow" as anybody was in those days, because, even as a rocker, KFJZ was a "straight arrow" station, and fairly conservative. It WAS Fort Worth after all.

I moved back to Houston in January of 74, but just a few years later in the late 70s Stevens showed up at KILT as half of the eternal "Hudson and Harrigan" show. I forget which one he was.

He's gone through several incarnations since then with a couple of partners, at several stations, all the while supporting an entire team of plastic surgeons at the medical center.

I don't know how old he is, but based on my own observations I believe he has to be at least 70. Anybody know for sure?

You do the math. I went to his 50th birthday party when he was working at KULF in 1981. He still has great pipes and has had a tuck or two over the years.

He was Hudson...Pruett was Irv Harrigan......I had tapes of them as H&H and still have some of their S&P on KULF lying around (in fact I often called in to comment after "Star Trots" on KULF......and got the last word in a couple of times! :) THAT was the good days of radio....(His previous or current wife (number 2 or 3 now; is it still Melissa?), one of the Jones family who owned KTRH and KLOL WAY BACK WHEN, is younger than his daughters!)

Mark Stevens married Melissa Jones? I did NOT know that. I worked alongside her on my first hitch in the KTRH newsroom back in 76 through 79.

She was partially disabled due to injuries she got in a serious car accident, and she had difficulties just moving around. I remember her as a quiet and sweet person, and I cannot imagine her having anything in common with the extroverted Stevens.

Wow. Talk about marrying the boss's daughter. Her father John Jones Jr. -- a nephew of the great Jesse Jones -- was President-CEO of Rusk Corp, which owned KTRH and KLOL. Melissa and her brother John T. "Jay" Jones III inherited Rusk Corp when their father passed away. Jay is the one who sold KTRH when his father died.

I had the pleasure of being acquainted with John Jones when I worked at KTRH in the 1970s and again in the late 80s, when he was in his final years. He was a cordial and funny guy who loved to sit in the coffee lounge and shoot the bull about the old days.

Filio, I think you're way off base with a lot of your gossip.

Regardless of how old he may be (and he won't tell you!), Mark is a pro's pro, a hell of a guy, and one of the most talented broadcasters I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Hey you took what I said wrong.

I wasn't criticizing MStevens. I was admiring him. ;D

He's a talented guy who can do practically anything, and I have a lot of respect for anyone who has managed to hang in this business as long as he has.

Somebody else here has noted he celebrated his 50th B'day in 1981. That makes him, well, hmm, er, uh, up there.

It's clear that calendar age doesn't mean a thing anymore. Didn't you detect an undertone of jealousy in my postings about him? I can only hope I'm doing half as well as he is when I get to be his age.
