A blogcritic's review of Dixie Chicks single

http://blogcritics.org/archives/2006/03/31/073008.php

by Al Barger. Excerpts:

""Not Ready to Make Nice" is basically a third-rate Faith Hill song. It's the worst end of that whiny victim crap, only she's a tough old broad who'll stand up and fight back, thus the title.

"The title almost has a musical hook, but it's just so bland and generic in every possible market-calculated way as to defy description...About the only thing I'd say this record definitely is NOT is country. There's next to nothing here musically to connect this to any rural music tradition. Nor is this whiny tone of victim-hood worthy of a country gal."

(Wonder if it's been on "After Midnight"'s "Pick it or Flick It" yet?)

I haven't heard the new album, but I've heard from country programmers who have heard the album that are not happy with this song as the choice for the first single partly because of the subject matter and partly because there's far better material on the album.

I'm a Dixie Chicks fan, but I'm not crazy about this single...and not really because of the subject matter, but because its simply not that great of a song. Country radio might would be more open to invite them back if they were giving us something like another "Wide Open Spaces". If they're trying to tell country radio to kiss off, then they've chosen the correct single to do so.

I program a country/classic country internet station, and I've heard the single.
I didn't care for...well, yeah, I hated it. Not even a catchy tune go with the
whining. We're going to pass on this song. <P ID="signature">______________

Trying progressive country with a taste of the controversy that brought us "GoodBye Earl" I see.

My tastes go all over, I like the song personally but yeah the message is pushing it, sort of Like "goodbye earl" which was a weird song with a catchy beat (which the chicks seem to know how to do pretty good).. I think this will be a wait and see, let the ones who push the new music first see if it will crash or win. Sounds like something that would win on AAA more though...

Another thing, If people can accept Tim Mcgraw's new single "When the stars go blue" I think they could accept the beat of the new chicks song IMO, the message however is a different story.

I love the song, and I am hanging for the new album. It is going for add's on AAA and Hot AC, so I am guessing they are pitching for a new audiance. Maybe country radio doesn't deserve them anyway. As an outsider, what observed was quite sickening. For a country that claims to be free, the format shut them down without giving them a chance to defend themselves. I know that stations dumped them based on "RESEARCH", but how do you get a group to slide so far so fast? There music was still the same after the comments were made, but because they chose to go against the grain of the average country music fan, they were blacklisted. Is it just me, or are most country music listeners in the US, right wing sheep?

In a way Smashedcd was right on but country music is more conservate as a whole than just the soccer moms IMO...

I figured the chicks would appear on a/c and AAA where people are more tolerant than on country radio, espcially since the song is aimed at the country listener as a reaction in song to what happened.

I don't know about some other areas of the country, but where country radio is a staple in the US south and midwest (you basically can't go anywheres there without at least one country station, but usually there are multiple)... The US citizens in them areas are fearlessly loyal to God,country, and NASCAR:)... and people at the time thought Natalie Maines and the rest of the chicks were trashing their (the average country listener) beloved (at the time) President who was "going after the evil doers of 9/11" with 9/11 being the first time in almost 60 years that someone attacked us inside our own borders.

It wasn't anything that the right wingers came up with from what I can find and remember... The Chicks just went after a hot button topic when they opened their mouth in redneck america and basically went from being loved to being almost completely banned from country radio in a week and a half... No research neccessary when the phones light up after a chicks song was played telling to "get them traitors off"... hince the line about the death threat in the song.

Country is starting to accept them back in some parts but having your first song basically telling the country music fans off (depending upon how the average fan takes the song) basically brings them back to where they were after they opened their mouth.. back on a/c radio where listeners are more middle to liberal in some areas (even though a/c is conservative to middle in the south and midwest also and places where I wouldn't expect to hear the chicks either) and where people aren't as loyal after a bad cd as country... IMPO

I tried to not respond, but sorry:

This song will die a slow death. The song isnt as good as what is on the rest of the CD and its topic is further polarizing and no...many stations are not supporting it. First four weeks its been in and out of 40 to 36-40 to 38. They go backwards in spins whenever any significant station plays them with any vigor (WUSN). Possibly the storm of controversy. This years ago would have been at 15 by now.

This is a country site. If you program country, you have to know your audience values. Natalie didnt and still doesn't. The listeners even know about the Entertainment weekly article where they basically trashed country (that made them rich)and further drove the nail in their own coffin. Thats cause they actually read and are as plugged in to todays society as any other format. Redneck! Give me a break.

Not republican...democrat...like or hate Bush. Its Troop and country support...period. Lots of fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters of troops putting themselves on the line so people like Natalie can say what she wishes. She had that right, and now her former listeners have the right to ignore them...and are.

I miss them in the format, but if this is your genre you know your listeners. I have been in this hunt since the beginning. There is and was no effective "wingers" just upset listeners, patriotic not redneck listeners. I hate that phrase, and its especially out of place on this site. We have strong and diverse demos in country, and I for one am glad that they recognize the cost of freedom and support the people fighting the fight. Pop isn't rushing to play this song either. One and two plays. Read your BDS.

By the way if you were a pd of an urban station, and there was a core artist that trashed blacks, would you rush to play the music...cause after all...its freedom of speech. i doubt you would want the outcry of controversy that comes with that freedom.

I have listened to the song at least 6 times now.... there is nothing to
grab you and in places, the instruments overpower the voices. I know there
is better material on the album. BTW, we haven't had a single request for the song...not one.
I was hoping for a better "comeback"....

please tell me how not supporting a president is the same thing as not supporting our troops??? i for one support the troops..but not the boneheaded president who put them in harms way..its his fault we have troops losing their lives over there...why do you support him??? bruce springsteen also doesnt support bush..but our local classic rock station plays him every 90 minutes or so..also jackson brown...you get the point..david crosby...

Re: It's #6 on Amazon's Pre-Order List But Some PD's Think They Know Better

Despite the fact the CD is flying up the pre-order charts (now at #6 and still climbing) on Amazon.com, and a large number of them being country and western fans, we are still watching some PD's decide to play politics with their music instead of just PLAYING IT. Of course, judging from a handful of call-ins from the crazies on CNN when they were brought up, apparently when some e-mails and calls come in from this crowd, some PD's respond instantly while the record sales tell quite a different story.

"With the hard feelings out there, especially here in the heartland, combined with the in-your-face lyrics, I don't think that boded well for them," program director Greg Mozingo (WIL-FM) said.

Greg, check those poll numbers lately? The majority of people with the hard feelings these days aren't the ones attacking the Dixie Chicks.

"But what concerns me about this song is it's backward thinking," he added. "I'd rather wait until the CD comes out and pick a song we can embrace and that doesn't have any negative connection to it." (KYGO)

So PD's are now making the determination that a song that people want to hear has "backwards thinking" so it doesn't get on the air. Get a talk show if you want to put your opinion out there.

KEEY in Minneapolis, which has been playing the Chicks' music all along, took a different approach. Instead of running the song up the flagpole and eliciting listener opinion, the station quietly slipped it into rotation and has been playing it two or three times a day.

"Our thought was to do that instead of batting on the hornets nest," said music director Travis Moon, who estimated he's received fewer than 10 complaints. "We wanted to put the song out there on its own merits without the fanfare. If our listeners come back and hate it, we'll take it off. If they like it, we'll move it up in rotation."

Travis has the right idea. Play the song, keep your personal politics out of the playlist and see where it goes.

For those who want to protect their listeners' "delicate ears" from the likes of the Dixie Chicks, here are their "American" comments from a recent call-in from CNN. They might not be in the stampede of the pre-ordering online, but for some reason there are a lot of PDs who think their views have more validity than the far larger group buying and listening to their stuff.

Tom in Staten Island

No I don’t think they will welcome them back, because they were very
disrespectful to our President: President George W. Bush.

Terri Johnson from Long Beach

I have military friends in Iraq who think it's ridiculous, and they do not
like her-er them ... three girls-who need to be kicked out of the United
States for ever saying anything about the President.

Judy from Milwaukee

I certainly hope not, because they're still doing the same- same stuff-being, uh, extremely disrespectful saying we were all ashamed of the President and it's, it’s, just something that should not be acceptable.

> No research neccessary when the phones light up after a

Who cares as long as they are still listening. In a lot of markets where there is one dominant country station and a handful of rimshotters, it's not like they are going to suddenly rush over to the urban outlet. I suspect a lot of programmers who quietly share their politics used some calls as an excuse to toss them off the playlist, especially when we see today's comments on the wires about "backwards thinking" and "they haven't reformed." It's transparent politics and as the PD in Minneapolis discovered when he just played the music without making an issue out of it, he had less than 10 complaints.

Another point of view

There's also this point of view which is the one I subscribe to...are the Dixie Chicks still a country act? The answer is, I don't know...but given their public comments about feeling uncomfortable in the format and choosing THIS particular song as their current single which is basically thumbing their nose at us, I'm getting the feeling they DON'T WANT TO BE ON COUNTRY RADIO ANYMORE. It's a feeling that frankly I think they're justified in having given how many country stations treated them. I do think that given what has happened in the last three years, country radio could very well welcome them back if they want to come back. Right now, I don't get the feeling they want to come back and I'm O.K. with that...we'll find room on our playlist for other artists. I'm a huge fan of their music and I'll go buy the CD when it comes out, but nowadays I don't really care if we play them or not.

As for the advance sales...Mariah Carey has probably sold more albums than any country artist (except maybe Garth Brooks) yet I don't think it would be a good idea to start adding her records simply because she sells a bunch of them. That's not a good argument.

Of course, (at least in our case) we're not getting bombarded with phone calls or e-mails to play or not to play the new Chicks song...so far it's been less than a trickle. True, you can't judge a whole lot by phone calls and e-mails, but given their popularity and the publicity surrounding their new song and upcoming album you'd think we'd hear quite a bit from our listeners as well as their fans, but we've heard virtually nothing. It's easy to see what we might lose by playing their new song, it's hard to see what we might gain right now. That situation can change in the future after we get some feedback, but first we actually need to get some feedback.

Re: Another point of view

I agree with you in the sense that Country Radio treated the Dixie Chicks unfairly.

I think they will always have the stigma of making comments about the president, at a time when he was popular, and many people believed his line about the war. Country Radio stations lean patriotic. And even though a good patriot can still take a leader to task, Country Music relies on a simpler cut and dry logic. Really it is "You are with us or are against us."

The artform that really is dominated by "Red State" U.S. America does not differentiate between valid criticism and treason. It really is and either/or situation. The President is commander in Chief and the country is at war. Therefore if you are a good citizen of the country, you will support the president and the War. This fallacious logic hurt the Dixie Chicks. It is ok to love your country but not the decisions the leaders make. But that is not true in some places, and unfortunately, these are the places where 'Country' radio usually is the most dominant.

Since they are called the Dixie Chicks, they could not break into another format. Even though they may have recorded one country song amid all of the pop songs that charted for them, they would have a hard time making it in any other genre besides 'Country' music. Just the essence of their name would not jive well on a pop station or soft rock, or regular rock.

I hope the Dixie Chicks and do well, and hope it serves as a reminder to all that there can be consequences of mixing politics and music. Sometimes people should stick to what they are good at. If you are given a platform for musical ability, use it for music. LEt the politicians talk politics.

They must not have heard Johnny Cash's "The one on the left". I think that's the title anyway, but something about mixing politics with the folk songs of the land. It is a good song with a good lesson.
