A Blogger's Complaint about WIOD's Katrina coverage

  • Thread starter FloridaBear1776
  • Start date

Radio programmers present and future - take note. This blog is proof of the old chestnut, "if you didn't hear it, they didn't do it." The blogger infers that WIOD had good coverage the day before and that morning. But when they punched in later that day and heard something they didn't think related to what they wanted to know - NOW - they were gone. In all fairness, however, the story was over (for MOST of the market), and the TV's were just killing time til they got into their regular 5pm newscasts...guarantee they were running their usual fare by then. As for radio - I wish WIOD had a LOCAL show on at 3PM, but the Schnitt-meister does get decent to great ratings and, to his credit, this blogger be damned, he is tons better than most talk show hosts talking about hurricanes. And to WIOD's credit, by Saturday, when the rest of radio - and Tv, for that matter, was back into sports or info-mercials, they trotted out old warhouse Ed Arnold. I know because I was listening - it was a delicious slice of South Florida - hearing listeners bitch about FP&L.

Ed Arnold? I'd rather listen to sports or info-mercials.....

Ed Arnold

He was good. Much better than listening to Schnitt
talking about Tampa.

Me, I'd rather clean the toilet than listen to
sports or infomercials.

During Katrina I was without power for almost 2 days. I
went to a movie I'd never heard of (The Island -- good
movie!) just because I didn't want to sit in the dark
for a second night.

The longest I've ever been without power.

And now, yet ANOTHER opinion...

Letter to the Broward New Times - regarding their "FTL hatchet job". Here's what most specifically addresses the thread's orignal premise...another opinion of WIOD's 'cane coverage which I think is pretty good...hey, at least they don't simulcast TV audio non-stop like most other radio stations...

"Compared to WFTL, Clear Channel looks good: 850-WFTL has gone Republican/conservative, as have so many others. As its radio personalities trash the poor and bedraggled in New Orleans, I think of Clear Channel radio, whose programming has changed. But in times of emergency, as during Andrew and Katrina, Clear Channel was there for us -- radio survivors such as Mike Wolf, John Levitt, Ed Arnold, newcomer Brian Andrews, and so many others with continuous live programming, taking calls from folk, providing contact 24/7."

I know letters-to-the-editor must be concise, but this one
was so tight it made it look like the sale of WTMI was a
consequence of Hurricane Andrew, nine years earlier. The
fact is, Cox made Woody Tanger the proverbial offer he
couldn't refuse.

I, too, am disappointed in WFTL's jettisoning of local
talk, for the second time during James Crystal's brief
ownership. They dumped some of their best people. Again. (See
WFTL Kills Local Talk -- Again!.)

I'm still pissed that WFTL dumped the excellent intelligent
daily talk show of former flower-child (and still liberal,
mind you) Joyce Kaufman. Miscast as an "adult hits"
deejay on sister station WJNA, she's as corny as Orville
Redinbacher.

Kelly Mitchell's new talk show has been unplugged,
too. Instead we have religious right dingbat Laura
Ingraham's syndicated snorting and sniggering in all
evening.

BUT we know New Times' audience is such that any letter
trashing evil conservatives and Republicans will play well.

They overlooked the good part of the switch: one of WFTL's
new talkers is Neal Boortz, a libertarian. NOT a conservative.
Maybe their target market is so far left that they can't
distinguish a conservative from a libertarian. I recommend
The World's Smallest Political Quiz for folks who
can't tell the difference without a scorecard.

But, dear radio fans and professionals, remember that this is
The New Times -- the paper that selected a pirate station as the
Best Radio Station of 2005. as described in
June Radio News.
They'd just as soon trash your legal station if
doing so appealed to their readers and sold ads...

He's basing his information on the recent article in the New Times. Did you read that article? He called Kelley Mitchell a big buxom blonde. LOL! Kelley is about 4'9" and is a tiny thing. He called Boortz a conservative. He's a big-time Liberatarian. So much for accuracy!

Take a look at WFTL's ratings. Any wonder they dropped local talk for syndicated?

True. And if you saw the caricature in the print edition,
she looked like a fat pig. Very unflattering picture of a
beautiful woman.

Speaking of ..... See the funny Talk Radiooo T-Shirts about WFTL/WJNA.

How did the ratings for Norm Kent, Al Milian, and Kelley
Mitchell compare to those for their existing syndicated
talkers, I wonder.
