A Change coming to the Buzz 1057??

From Allaccess.com (registration required) - If you read in between the lines changes are a comin'!

But...Do we care???

I'll give Mr. Vanness a listen..

Veteran personality and programmer MARK VANNESS has been named morning host at REGENT AC WBZZ (BUZZ 105.7)/ALBANY, NY.

[EDIT]

[EDIT-Quotation exceeds Fair Use standards.]

He's done mostly Top 40, according to his resume:

http://www.markvanness.com/Resume_Endorsements.html

He's also done some classic rock. Either *could* be highly successful on 105.7 however Regent rarely does things right.

Going after FLY wouldn't work for them- they'll never hire the A grade talent necessary, and they'll never be able to rattle the heritage status - they should take a hint from going after B. They've written their own book on failure.

As for classic rock - that would be wise of them for two reasons. One is that people are tired of PYX. Two is their dial position is close to PYX - essentially one click up in seek terms. They would have had more success if they were between B and Magic, imo. Formats on the Albany dial tend to be in neighborhoods - AC/Oldies/Adult formats in one chunk, new rock oriented stations in one chunk, country near one another, etc.

Please Please Please Classic Rock. I am soooo sick of turning down my treble when I switch between the River and PYX., and turning it up when I go back to the river. What ever happened to PYX??? That is a rhetorical question...lol. Not only do they play the same 100 songs in a row, but sound like they want to make your ears bleed. No definition, just screaming highs and tons of compression. Amazing they always fall into the top 10. Must be what 50 Kw of garbage gets youl! I guess all you need to be is to be of the most powerful stations in the area with history, and people just dont care, and will listen anyways. Or is it just because we don't have any other choice?

My guess is they will switch to Top 40. I can't even listen to the Buzz anymore. And get rid of the "Buzz" name..Gimme anything, "Power" - or "Hot" - Not Buzz..

As for classic rock give WAAL a listen. www.991thewhale.com I think they have classic rock hands down. I don't even listen to PYX..River is ok..Although I don't care for their morning show. Did you see their interview with Journey and how uncomfortable the guys were..Wow.

Whoever said to dump the "Buzz" name couldn't be more right. How many awful format failures has Regent ran under that moniker? A new name would be a good place to start.

What other format holes could they fill? I'd hate to even suggest smooth jazz because it is an abomination upon mankind... but it could work. WHRL successfully did it for years and had WZMR been graced with a decent signal that actually penetrated buildings it would have worked too. (What the hell was that Love FM hybrid they tried?!?!) With a signal like WBZZ has, the smooth jazz could be not only successful but take some nice numbers from B.

So - CHR, Classic Rock, and Smooth Jazz.

Any other "format holes" that could be filled?

2 formats needed in the albany area are:

1. Dance format playing dance music from the 70's up to now.
2. Real Oldies format playing hits from the 50's & 60's.
These 2 formats we can use in the albany area more than another chr or rock station in my opinion. There is too many of those on the dial already.

I don't think either format is a real hole but more of niche formats for a very small audience. The "real oldies" is already on 1240 or true oldies whatever. I will agree that there is far too much rock but there is money in rock and a classic rock helps take some dollars from PYX and keep GNA making the big bucks. Or CHR takes from Fly so to protect GNA.

1240am hasn't had the 50s & 60s playing for a while now ever since they put Scott Shannon's feed on the station. Now 1240 plays just about the same music as WTRY does. Another sensless move in albany radio in my opinion. As far as 105.7 goes it will be interesting to see what format they change it to.

I don’t think CHR is the right way for WBZZ to go. “Fly” is too big a station. Plus, um, isn’t WKKF (102.3) still CHR? If so, with the hypothetical WBZZ flip to CHR, that would make 3 CHR stations. 3 CHR stations? Na, that’ll never work. Just my thoughts…

Not all stations are created equal - Kiss is a Class A signal that does so-so. If you are Regent you need to go after the other big money makers to "protect" their own in house money maker (WGNA) and they tried that with B, and failed. They already have a rock product which goes after WHRL and WZMR - and a tad of WPYX. They can't touch River if they couldn't touch B... so what money maker is left? PYX and Fly. I don't think they'd be successful against Fly BUT in the chess game of radio clusters "protecting" their big stations...

Thanks, I suggested to get rid of the Buzz name.

I'll have to check, but I don't believe Kiss is considered CHR anymore, more like HOT AC. Why not have 2 CHR, 2 Country...It will never happen, but not a bad idea. A dance format is good. Even a Jack format.

Just trying to think out of the box.

Get ride of the syndication programs, more live and local. Means employment here locally, economy stays here.

Right now, nobody is touching B95 as far as ratings, 9.5. The Buzz, 1.5, resepctively.

It is all about the format,, and the personalities. You gotta spend $$ to make $$..

Wake up Buzzzzzzzz.....

It might do well excepting the fact that it won't happen. Regent, CC, and Pamal all need to look at where they can take revenue from one another. A CBS FM type format wouldn't take ad dollars from any of the big money makers, just two minor revenue generators - 98.3 and 100.9

Or even better how about CBSFM's signal on 105.7. I would like that hearing CBSFM on the albany dial but in reality it most likely won't happen unless there is a miracle.

There are a lot of major CBS FM fans on this board and I can't figure out why! I've streamed it on more than one occasion and find it to be a fairly bland classic hits stations. Beatles into B52s? What's so special about that? The jingles have some lasers in them which is just tacky. Forgive me for knocking your apparent favorite station but I don't see what's so special about it! I have a feeling what you find special in this station is the nostalgia it generates for you. I can imagine this as a once superior station and that memory is what keeps it great in your mind.

You're right, read between the lines then identify the logical goal of where they want the station to fit, their likely answer will be AAA debuting with the new morning host. Format likely similar to the Point 100.3 in Glens Falls.
