A Change in Rocky Mt. Radio

99.3 is now Jammin 99. This must have happened in the wee hours of the morning because I heard it last night it was still "ZAX".I tuned in this morning it was Jammin'99.It is now R&B oldies instead of "Classic Top 40".It is an interesting move because that market is flooded with R & B stations.92.1,95.5(which First Media also owns) and Foxy out of Raleigh are among the top ratings grabbers in the market.I hope this works out because they have some good folks over there and ZAX was the readheaded stepchild of the FM's that they own in the area.I hope they finally decide to cut out alot of the Voice Tracking,go live in all dayparts and give it the TLC it has been missing.Classic Top 40 is a cool positioning statement.Somebody should grab that.Only time will tell if this is a good move.In alot of cases the format gets blamed for failure when alot of other factors play a role in a stations lack of sucess.Again 99.3 has some good people and I wish them all the best with the new direction. Was it the format or execution of the format.New call letters coming???? Website redesign????
A 6,000 watt radio station is a precious commodity!!!! It should never be taken for granted.. Good luck to all.....

This is probably a better fit for the community considering the demographics. I'd rather have 1% of large pizza than 1% of small one.

If they wanted to change formats, they should have considered something other
than "R & B", i agree that this area is saturated with a urban sound at 92.1, 95.5,
and 104.3, WZAX(if it remains so) should have continued with a "Classic Top 40"
format, there are not that many stations in the Rocky Mount market that is doing
this, especially since WTRG became WRVA, and ditched "oldies".

Help me understand this.

Yeah, Foxy is up on top in RM, so they want to chop them down. But with Power 95.5 already making a big splash in the ratings since they got Steve Harvey, they're already in a position to take a big share of whatever Urban radio money is floating around Rocky Mount. Don't know the demos, but isn't "Jammin'" going to take a chunck out of Power, too? So, what--they end up with two Urbans pulling 3 shares each and splitting the same money?

Or is all this to take down Soul 92 Jams?

Mix & Bob pull 8 shares in Rocky Mount between the two of them. Granted, ZAX's attempt at contemp sucked, but ya gotta think a decent Hot AC or Mainstream CHR was the way to go.

What's the thinking?

Being jockless is a bad idea.Personalities help brand your new image much more effectively
than jingles.Being jockless give listeners the impression that most of the staff is gone or may not be on board with the new format.Bring back Braswell,Richmond and get a night jock!!! Just my humble opinion. If I want to hear a jukebox, I'll listen to a jukebox...
