A-Channel gonna ch-ch-change in August

Just went onto calary.a-channel.com, and they have a spot on the website saying that on August 2, A Channel becomes CityTv. They also have some new programming coming along.

Now, seeing how A-Channel just built a brand new anchor desk and transitioned away from their "dynamic story-telling and presentation" style of news program, any ideas of CityTV Calgary news?

I think they should keep the desk, since it gives news delivery a more professional look when competing with CFCN/Global. They should also hype the weather department a little. CFCN's Skywatch Weather seems to be a very reputable source for alot of farmers/ranchers and the average Calgarian. Why not use a tag like "CityTV StormTracker"
I dunno. Just keep Calgary City TV local, and use what worked for A Channel in their trial-and-error learning process.
 
It will be very interesting to see how things unfold, but I HOPE AND PRAY the new City TV Calgary will call their news CityPulse news, along with all the other City Tv's in Canada.

I hate the "City News" name...It just sounds so BLAH!...if that name were so great, they would have called it that in the first place.

They have a window painting on the doors of the lobby(as do most of the buildings/stores in downtown Calgary because of the Stampede) with a cowboy lassoing a television set with 'Citytv August 2nd' on it.

They're probably doing away with it. The newsroom/studio is under renovations. They've ditched the desk and have Ted Henley and Suzanne Fox standing in front of a plasma screen where the desk once was. Looks sorta chroma keyed. The sports is done elsewhere and the anchors occasionally move around.

StormTracker might sound too familiar with Global SkyTracker.<P ID="signature">______________

Some news and notes on Citytv Calgary...

Well today, I was in downtown Calgary and I spotted a newsvan.
Not any newsvan, a Citytv newsvan. A-Channel is already re-doing their fleet. After asking a coupla questions..

The news will be called CityNews for sure.
CP24 might go national...

and as I've said before, CityNews in Calgary will revert back to standing up and walking around the newsroom, just like the good ole' days when A-Channel first launched.

They're shooting themselves in the face. CHUM just doesn't get that their Toronto format doesn't work in other markets. CKAL has been a successful station with good ratings which I understand have challenged CFCN, but they are going to end up like CKVU and CHRO have: last place behind CBUT and CBOT, respectively.

CHUM's pattern with its stations is that they buy a relatively successful station and butcher it until it is behind the local CBC O&O in the ratings. CKVU was Vancouver's second-place station (nobody could beat CHAN), and CHUM destroyed it. CHRO was Ottawa's second-place station, but recently it has slipped behind CBOT. They butchered the noon newscast on CFPL/CKNX/CHWI, after years of firing longtime, well-known personalities. CFPL and CKVR have survived on monopolies for a long time, and there has been talk of establishing a CBC station in London, which would threaten CFPL. Now CBET in Windsor beat CHWI for a long time, but CHWI is one station that CHUM actually put worthwhile money into and it has beat CBET.

In conclusion, CHUM should know full well that CKAL will quickly slip behind CBRT and CICT if they use the same formula they used in butchering CKVU in 2002. I will have no sympathy for CHUM when they're wondering why their format isn't working in Calgary.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by mjlarochelle on 07/20/05 03:02 PM.</FONT></P>

There's already a CBC O&O in London, CBLN ch.40, which largely repeats Toronto's CBLT, except for local ads. Practically, all CBC has to do is open a local TV news department and start a London segment for "Canada Now".

I DO NOT see CP24 going ALL national, but I do see a local CP24 with increased National content.
Each CP24 will most likely air their local news the same way Toronto's CP24 airs theirs, but perhaps a National news program of some sort could be on all CP24 stations immediately following the local content...but have they applied to the CRTC for a licence to broadcast such a channel outside the Toronto market? <P ID="signature">______________

That's not quite the case. CBLN-TV is licensed simply as a transmitter of the television programming undertaking CBLT Toronto. The CBC has mentioned desire to start a local newscast in London, which would require them to apply to the CRTC to license a new television programming undertaking at London, while at the same time amending the license for CBLT to delete the transmitter at London. The CBC went through a similar process in London for CBC Radio One back in 1998 - CBCL-FM 93.5 was a transmitter of CBL 740 in Toronto, and the CBC had CBCL converted to a radio programming undertaking when they wanted to add local London programming.
 
A-Channel News Now Channels...

Does anyone remember back in 2000, Craig Media won some applications for operations of Category 2 Specialty channels, known as
A-Channel News Now Calgary/Edmonton/Alberta/Manitoba etc....?

1. Has anyone watched these or have any information about these channels such as how they are presented, content, location?
2. What is going to happen now that Chum is in control?

I think it's under review by the CHUM group as we speak, and something may laungh yet...remember...think globally...be local...or something like that...what ever the heck Mosas Zniamer(SP?) (where ever he is today) originally said when CP24 first signed on in Toronto.

I also wish that Ottawa could have an "A news Now" channel modeling after CP24...but I guess Ottawa, and area, is just too small for that.
Too bad.
It would be nice to watch newscasts from other parts of Canada as part of one of their program fillers...how much could that possibly cost to run?...surely not any more than the talk shows CP24 has now?
(No attack on those talk shows intended, and no comment, respectfully.)
(Also wouldn't mind if CP24 carried actual newscasts from other parts of Canada, like Ottawa, etc...outside of their weekly Ontario Now feature...and aired them daily.)<P ID="signature">______________

Yes -- in 2001, CHUM was granted licenses from the CRTC to set up 4 similar channels, serving Alberta, BC, Sasketchewan / Manitoba, and Ottawa, all under the "Pulse 24" name. Don't know if the licenses are still good, since CHUM never went through with putting them on the air.
 
A-Channel sign gone...

Yesterday, I saw that the A-Channel sign was removed from the front. Today as I rode on the C-Train(our above ground version of a subway), the Citytv neon sign was in place. It wasn't funky and cool like the previous sign. This one was white and was all blocky and such. The old one was more 'artsy'.

Just thought I'd let ya know. Unlike the changes at CKVU to their building, there's been no changes to the exterior at all.<P ID="signature">______________

White and all blocky is the new look for City Toronto too, and the new vehicles are BLACK instead of white. No more red City with Blue TV. The new 3d look took place a few weeks ago on Toronto's City.(on the television, not on the vehicles!) The new vehicles are black with white Citytv lettering, and a yellow CP with a white 24.
Watch the last credits at the end of any "City" program. Gone is the pink background flashing with the word Chum in white with a black border around the pink. In it's place is the new blocky look with the word CHUM.

Also, it's official that Citypulse Toronto is now City News as of Tuesday...but that's old news now.<P ID="signature">______________
