A Christmas Story on TBS

Well, I double--make that TRIPLE-- dog dare you not to see this classic movie! Hardly noticed when released in 1983 (not much of a promo budget, and I think it only went out to 100 theatres) but it has gotten a cult following since then.

Dreams of getting that Little Orphan Annie decoder ring ("A crummy commercial!") and of course the Red Ryder BB Gun (careful, you'll shoot your eye out with it, kid). Having your mom dress your kid brother up so heavily for a cold day that he can't put his arms down. Be careful the neighbor's dogs don't get that turkey! And see how proud your dad can feel when he wins a leg lamp in a contest.

TBS is showing it continuously till 8 pm Christmas night. No time to watch? See the 30 second version (with bunnies) here:

Also like It's A Wonderful Life when it premiered in the summer of 1946,A Christmas Story premiered in the late spring/early summer of 1983 thus flopping big time at the box office because Christmas movies shown in the summer didn't go over very well, but gaining cult status when it first started showing on TV in the late 80's and became the holiday classic it deserves to be.

Believe it or not,I saw it for the first time last year and it was/and is well worth seeing. One of my favorite scenes was when one of the kids on a dare stuck his tongue to the flag pole at school and all of the fire department, police department, etc came on the scene making Ralphie embarrassed beyond compare.

And let's mention that the marathon began on
Christmas Eve at 8/7 Central time.

Meaning that, thanks to our stupid cable
company and it's love affair with west coast
feeds in the winter, it didn't start until
9:00pm in Phoenix and Tucson.

Not exactly a kid-friendly timeslot (9-11pm)
for the younger ones.

I guess people like this, and it must make $$$$$ or they wouldn't do it. But I was at the Video store and they have like 20 copies of this for rent at 99¢. See this is why I hate cable...LOL

Once I figured out the meaning of life....Then I forgot to write it down.

You gotta love the Santa at the mall!

"HO! HO! HO!"
"HO! HO! HO!"

"What do you want for Christmas little boy?"

Then Ralphy is about to go down the slide when he remembers the Red Rider BB Gun!

Santa says, "You'll shoot your eye out kid. Merry Christmas. Ho! Ho! Ho".

The elf woman is funny too.

"Come on! Quit dragging your feet!"

A Christmas Story opened November 18, 1983.
However it was pulled from most theaters a couple of weeks before Christmas due to low volume. But a number of people protested and the movie was held or returned until well after New Years 1984.

On November 21, 1984, the movie was re-relased to huge crowds.

Thats my favorite part too. There are just so many classic scenes in that movie you gotta love.

"Deck the harrs with fows of jorry, fa ra ra ra ra ra ra ra ra"

I just love that movie so much. I watched at least four of the movies during TBS' 24 hours of a Christmas story.
______________
