A complete, all-encompassing, brand-new salute to Denton's KDNT

As I alluded to in another post, my brand-new tribute to KDNT-AM/FM in Denton is NOW COMPLETE and can be found at www.knus99.com. This replaces the old version that was constantly "under construction" for about the last 5 years. Set aside an hour or so if you want to read the entire thing! Lots of photos, stories, soundbites...even old rate cards, correspondence, license copies, etc.

If you have to ask, "KDNT--who?", just check it out. All will be told. For me, it was my first "real" station to broadcast on. On a larger scale, it was a pitstop for Willie Nelson, Bill Moyers, Pat Boone, Josh Holstead, Ted Davis, Bill Mercer, Nick Walker of The Weather Channel, George Dunham, Mark Followill, George Gimarc, Roger Emrich and many others.

Nice work Mike!

I've always been curious about Galen Gilbert. As you noted he owned KDNT, and for a while a standalone FM in Sulphur Springs, plus stations in Jasper, La Mesa and I believe in Missouri. I guess I'm intrigued by small market owners. Any thoughts?

I agree, Mike has done a great job on this site.

I worked there weekends in 1988-89, and resigned when Dennis talked Galen Gilbert into the affiliation with Z-Rock. "We have 5 affiliates! Including Grand Rapids, Michigan!"

IIRC, Galen had brought Grandcolas from the radio station(s) Galen owned in Mexico, MO.

BTW, Mike...no mention of Sheryl Hassett? She worked afternoon drive on the FM side, and was in ad sales for them. She went on to do ad sales for KVIL and commercial voiceovers in Dallas.

Thanks for the kind words! Much appreciated. Even if you aren't an ex-KDNT'er, there's plenty of interesting photos from the old days of radio, and some great tongue-in-cheek stuff that's hard to imagine doing today.

I don't have any history on Galen Gilbert beyond what I put on the site (KZEE, et.al.) Surfing around for a photo of him (which I never found one,) I ran across an article talking about his recent retirement and selling off the last of his stations. I think it said he'd started in radio in 1939! So he must be on up there in years now. I worked there during the Gilbert ownership, but never saw him or ever heard anything about him.

Sheryl Hassett *IS* on there...just look in the 'Where Are They Now'/former employee section. I wasn't able to incorporate all the names into the story. I'm kinda hoping this 'unveiling' and a little PR will bring out some more ex'es with stories, names, photos, etc to add.

Speaking of, feel free to email me with any of that, or PM me on the board. I don't need to match an alias to a name or anything, but if I'm missing your name on the list, lemme know!

Galen Gilbert owned and ran KUOA in Siloam Springs Arkansas. He sold it about 2 years agao and the station is now Sprots under the new ownership. As far as I know, he reited in Siloam Springs. he should he is 90 something. Worked with him for a time there. Pretty nice guy. He was to me anyways. I had no complaints except he did pay very well, but that's radio.

Excellent ! Great Job Mike ! I've been reading a bit of it each day. Finished earlier today.

Excellent job Mike! I know you put allot of hours into KDNT. I have no idea how in the world you ever came up with some of your information and facts. You talked to some folks with good memories and to allot of folks! Wow.....all the people who went through that place! You know my memory of that place wasn't that good! I think you, heck I know, you used all the information I gave you in a few paragraphs or less! I did not want to be there when I was, but had to do it.....it was the only job I could find! I got in, did what I did and moved on!

I guess even though I treasure my "good" days in radio, I have never really gathered that much information from the places I have worked. At the time it was fun, but who would have ever thought that in this day and time there would be someone interested in what any of us did back then?

Thanks, Mike, for a very nice job well done!!
