A Couple HD Changes

FYI was in the Cleveland area recently and discovered these changes:
- 99.5 HD2 is now Tik-Tok Radio. No surprise since it's iHeart owned.
- 107.3 HD2 is now FCB Faith; Christian Pop like K-Love but leaning Urban.

Funny. I was about to ask if there were any recent changes to HD Radio.

Tik-Tok radio?! That's a thing? NO THANKS!

It'd be nice if 107.3 could repeat WAKR on one of their HD subs, which would help cover more ground than both AM 1590 and their FM repeater combined. I guess they make more of a profit leasing out channels rather than airing something that they already own.

Welcome, anyone can submit station changes/additions on that site. There are some stations listed that need to have someone who lives around them check whether the station info (format, etc) is still accurate. You can select “Show Outdated stations” or “Show Suspected stations” to see them.

Just noticed this evening that 95.5 has added HD. Wasn't expecting this to happen this soon. The HDs are not yet active but show HD2 will be K-Love Eras and HD-3 will be Air1. I would expect Eras will leave 105.7 HD2 and 103.7 but wondering if Air1 will stay on 98.1 HD2 to add additional coverage of Akron.

Maybe they can put oldies back on 105.7 HD2.
Yes. Something with a mostly 60s format. Real Oldies was good over 10 years ago, but they to have changed and shifted towards newer music and top hits. I remember when they had 0 commercials on that network, then eventually added a minute of commercials near the top of every hour.

I wish that they would pick up The Breeze on an HD3 sub as well, assuming that it's still as good as I last remember back when it was on WGAR. Or maybe something similar to Sunny 101.7?

Is HD even a factor in radio or is it just like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic? Or is it an example of too little to late like AM Stereo? I can hit scan on my radio and some days it'll lock on to some of the station's HD channels and other days nary a peep. The only ones that seem to come in fairly regular are WQAL's HD 2 and WHLK's HD2 channel but even they have lots of drop outs when I'm tooling around. It seems like they could change whatever they're playing to the hottest format at the moment and it wouldn't matter one iota. Now if WMJI would put actual oldies [50s/60s/70s] on their HD2 I'd probably be driving around with a 15 foot antenna on my car in an attempt to get it to come in.

All you need to do is turn on your Bluetooth and stream the iHeart Real Oldies channel in the car. The liners may be different but they playlist is identical to what a reborn WMJI HD2 "Oldies" would be.

The HD signals used to be somewhat cool versions of radio formats. Now, just like the FM dial they are cluttered with news/talk/sports simulcasts or even more K-Love religious stuff.

HD is only a factor in that it provides something for stations to feed to a translator. When it was introduced, it was a reaction to the threat posed by satellite radio. But as time went by, two truths were revealed: Americans, for the most part, don't want to pay for radio, and niche genres or deep playlists of popular genres are of no interest to the lion's share of American radio listeners.

I liked what 102.1 had on their HD2 (Coffee House?) and it was nice having 2 of WNCX with their HD2 but like CTL said, they weren't worth keeping.
HD has made it possible for Christian local/semi-local networks to start and grow networks and I see that continuing to grow.

Pretty hard when (1) you don't have Bluetooth in the car and (2) you don't have an unlimited data plan with your cellular carrier.

I don't have Bluetooth or HD Radio in my car. Not even a line in jack. My last car had a tape player, and I ended up using one of those tape adapters connected to my Insignia portable HD Radio with the cord strung over the visors for a decent antenna. It worked well, but not as well as a properly installed radio but better than I expected. Supposedly there's a Bluetooth tape adapter that you can buy, so anyone who still has a tape player in their car can use this to pair their phone or other audio device to the adapter. Goes to show you that tape players ended up being good for something other than playing an actual tape.

I just got back from Hilton Head SC. We found an oldies station (Pure Oldies 106.5) playing 50s, 60s and early 70s. They sounded a lot like WMJI of the 90s.

It seems like every place I travel to, I find at least one of the following on OTA radio:
• Oldies
• Soft hits
• Smooth jazz

They are not. I have three kids in their 20s and none of them own a radio. When I ride with them in their cars, they never listen to FM. Always files or streams.
This generation is pretty sad. They don't want to own things other than the essentials. I probably don't blame them for not having a radio as there's hardly anything good to listen to anymore.
