A Couple Observations about WGBY Springfield

A couple observations about WGBY Channel 57 in Springfield.

1. For the past several months they've been using on-screen logo that says WGBY 57. Occasionally I remember them mentioning Channel 57 during station ID's but never before on their on-screen logo. http://wgby.org/images/wgby_logo_lg.gif

2. A few years ago WGBY picked up the high school quiz show show "As Schools Match Wits" from its long-time home WWLP Channel 22. (I guess WWLP still produces the show or something because I've seen Lin Television mentioned in the closing credits of the show). Anyway now in addition to "As Schools Match Wits", WGBY is airing another high school quiz show called "High School Quiz Show." Both these shows are airing back to back at 9AM on Sundays.

So a local institution such as a school quiz show has gone the way of classical music. I guess there was not enough demand from the public to "support" the show (ironically, it ends up on a public station to stay alive).

I looked this morning but couldn't find their original "57" logo they used for years--before anyone used "bugs". They dropped the use of 57 years ago, probably because cable systems carried them on different channel numbers. That's still the case today, of course, so maybe they're making it easier for people getting their signal over-the-air to use their virtual channel number of 57.
