A couple of AM notes

Just a couple of things noticed while running up the dial these last couple of days.

First, KYND/Cypress at 1520 is off the air and has been this whole week. Nothing filed to go silent, so not sure what this is all about. No carrier, no anything. It is just off.

KGOL/Humble at 1180 has changed CDs. Now a mixture of some jazz, some...uh soft rock I guess, and some instrumental elevator music. They have sold some time during the noon hour as their was an hour long block of paid advertisements from 12 to 1.

KLAT/Houston at 1010 is extremely loud. Something has went crazy with the volume control. Sure glad KLAT isn't carrying the World Cup. Those horns are already loud enough.

KYOK still unlistenable. Why not just save the money you're using to power this thing up every morning and take it the direction of KZZB/Beaumont. Off the air. I hate to hear the once grand YOK be forgotten about the way it is now.

Did KLVL increase power already? It sure has much better penetration into North Houston lately. Noticed some Indian programming on it yesterday, which I wasn't aware of before. KLVL has always been Spanish to the best of my knowledge.

The music fill on KGOL might be a good indication that the Houston radio market has reached a saturation point for the brokered time radio business model. You would think someone else would snatch up the time. Of course any major operation from a potential time buyer would take time to put together, but still interesting.

At a check a few minutes ago it appears KLAT is operating from its nighttime site during the day. Signal seems to be reduced from the usual nighttime power; easier to hear KBBW underneath. Was the bad audio during daytime operation? They could currently be fixing the problem at the day site.

The current KYOK is a colossal waste of a frequency by ownership that obviously NEVER listens to what is actually being broadcast. Total incompetence. Tin cans on a string sound far superior. The license should be yanked.

Yes, they have boosted their daytime power. The South Asian programming has been going on for some time now. KLVL seems to broker out to anyone now, not just religious programming clients.

KLAT is not operating off the night site during the day, we have been makeing adjustments on the day site in preparation for a new transmitter install.

KLAT does seem improved today. Frog, it was during the day when the KLAT distortion was occurring. Didn't notice it at night, although I don't get KLAT at night very well anyway.

Scary that Entravision can't get the time sold on KGOL. That's a 50kW blowtorch at daylight. Being that they are predominantly a Spanish language broadcaster, I'm surprised that a full time Spanish format hasn't surfaced at 1180.

I'm in total agreement of YOK's license being yanked. What a tragic end to a once legendary radio station. I can't believe that Darrell Martin allows 1140 to remain as is for the past year. You are right, it is obvious that no one is paying attention.

It surprised me to hear the South Asian programming at 1480. As I recall, 1480 has been Spanish for its entire life. Definitely better signal coming from Pasadena now. Nighttime still leaves much to desire.

Mr. Turner, I noticed KYND off of the air last Tuesday on my daily scan of the dial. You are correct. It was off 5 of 7 days last week and has been off Sunday through today of this week. I overstated the length of silence, and I apologize. I am having difficulty finding the STA filed for KYND with the FCC. Would you mind helping me locate this? I'd hate to think that the station was off the air illegally as KYND has been one of the many stations in the Houston area that has always played by the rules.

Dear Pirpledevil,

You are incorrect. I am the GM of KYND and write this from in front of the on air console, just manually firing off the 2pm ID.

We went off Wednesday at 3:46pm and were off the air until today for reasons I cannot reveal to the public in respect for all parties involved.

It is a pleasure to meet you and I respect your privacy as well as that of those parties involved. KYND is indeed on the air as of my 2:15pm check and is running the same CRI programming as 1540 KGBC/Galveston almost in sync. Is the CRI programming going to remain on 1520, or is this temporary? CRI would have a much improved signal in the metro area on your station as opposed to KGBC if they remain on KYND. I have found myself listening to the "Musical Safari" on KGBC on many an afternoon and would certainly enjoy continuing to do so on the far superior signal of KYND here in the north side of Houston.

Hi Purpledevil,

Good to meet you. If you'd ever like to stop by the station sometime, just let me know. Being a locally owned stand alone, we are sort of old fashioned in the radio world. No corporate attitude but plenty of low key, low stress and flexible attitudes.

If you just tuned in, it should sound much better now. My feed had been very overmodulated. Now if I could just get the hang of where that legal ID goes! I'm flying blind on the board with a feed and my ID on a mini disc that I manually hit for the moment.

I appreciate the invitation to visit. I'd certainly like to take you up on the offer in the near future. It's great to know there are a few old fashioned stand alones still out there in a market this size with the appreciation of what local community based radio should sound like. I definitely noticed a difference in KYND's audio today as opposed to past experiences, and for the better. I heard you ID at 3:00pm, on time by the way, and when you caught the KGBC ID shortly thereafter and briefly cut the audio. The music on the station sounds very clean and full on my receiver, so you have certainly made the right adjustments. Great job and I look forward to hearing more from your station.
