a couple of random thoughts

Is it me, or is WRKO playing the same boring crappy PSA's on the Howie Carr show day after day, week after week, month after month?

If they can't sell the time, at least find some different PSA's to use.

Random thought #2..... I decided to hop on the bike and take a ride over to Hampton Beach Saturday night. As I went along Rt 101 in NH, I went by the exit for N.E. Dragway, and had a flashback to 1975.... SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY !!! When was the last time N.E. Dragway advertised on the air in the Boston Market? Back in the day they bought all sorts of time on WRKO, and IIRC WVBF.

We discussed the Zayres back to school ads not too long ago, so I'll open this up to discussion... what ads from days gone by, the ones you heard all the time, have disappeared from the airwaves.

1 877 Cars for Kids? It's everywhere. Yes times are very tough. Which makes the RS such a valuable property. They attract money.

You know things are bad when Supermarket chains are dumping newspaper distribution of their flyers and going with the USMail guaranteeing it gets to an address.

My wife and I both agree that when that Cars for Kids AD ( it ain't no PSA, it's bought time) comes on, it is an instant change of station.

There are ads that are so annoying, they drive listeners away, and that is one of the top 3 in my book.

How does a radio station saturate the airwaves with those spots, and not know they are driving listeners away? In my case, if I am listening to Howie and that spot comes on, I flip on the "magic radio" and chances are I am not returning to WRKO for 23 hours.

It's not like the radio station has much of a choice. It either accepts the money the advertiser is willing to pay for saturation exposure or it leaves the money on the table. Since I hear similarly aggravating bulk buys airing on stations up and down the dial, I'm guessing that few broadcasters consider the turn-off factor significant enough for them to turn away a paying customer.

hey, TV's got that horrible National Floors Direct spot ever 10 minutes on every station...not to mention Bernie and Phyl's...uck!

Those are mild in their annoyance factor compared the the ones I referenced.

And talk about stuff that is way past it's kill date, the National Guard PSA on WRKO, has the NG people talking about Hurricane Katrina.

Katrina was FIVE years ago. Yes I know New Orleans has yet to fully recover, but come on, the NG can't come up with something else to toot their own horn about.

877 Cars for Kids?

The worst!! I can't reach for the dial quickly enough

how about the Loan Depot commercials in the 80s? "If you're a homeowner... and you need a loan!" The head of the company, Bill Camuti, later got convicted of mail fraud charges.

Al if you are remembering threads from 3 and a half years ago, you need to seek out professional help or find a hobby!

I'm going to go back and read the thread though, thanks for pointing it out.

The same PSAs indeed, also showing up on their sister station Mike 93.7 and on many other stations too.

I actually did hear a National Guard (Air Force NG?) PSA that sounded "new" to me on RKO but they are still doing the Katrina one ("all my possessions were in the driveway--I mean, what we do
saves lives"). Spots unsold, filling with PSAs.

Can't they do something like 104.9 does:
(jingle): "Your North Shore happenings..." --followed by a local event being promoted.

Wanna serve the local community, have Pete Gustin or Bill Smith or Dana Hersey do a few
of those...

I found it when doing a Google search for Bill Camuti to find out what happened to him. I found my old post. I'm not THAT crazy. OK, I am but I'll let it be known I have plenty of hobbies ;D

and no AFLAC commercials during the Sox games this year. I miss them--especially the one with Yogi Berra, although it lives on in YouTube

OK, NOW you can say I need professional help!

If you go their website it neve rtells you what "Kars fo Kids" is for.

Bob's Discount Furniture ads have me going for the button as soon as I hear his irritating voice. Since day one all he has done is call everyone else in the furniture business crooks. He seems to be doing OK, but I wouldn't go to one of his stores if they were giving stuff away. Remember when his mantra was that there was no such thing as free delivery or financing, ("I doubt it") everything was built into the price. Now he talks about his free ice cream, cookies, and coffee. I guess when he gives stuff away it's a different story.

His strategy for the tax free weekend was to say that everyone else marked their prices up and you weren't really saving any money. When Building #19 ran an ad for their famous "Jerk-o-pedic" matress and showed a caricature of a scrawny little creep with a beard next to it, I laughed for the rest of the day.

I was never in the furniture business. I've never even been in one of his stores. I have no ax to grind. I just can't stand his commercials.

If you go their website it never tells you what "Kars fo Kids" is for.

I found it without any trouble.

Your car donation to Kars-4-Kids will benefitJoy for Our Youth. J.O.Y. is a national organization dedicated to addressing the educational, material, emotional and spiritual needs of disadvantaged Jewish children and their families.

If Kars for Kids is buying those saturation ads, how much money goes to kids?

Maybe the kids can borrow some money. After all, "There are eight offices of Household Finance within the sound of my voice."

usually those car donation programs have the cars sent to auto salvage yards, and the yards pay the charity a fee for the car, and the person donating the car gets a write off for the actual cash value of the car ( before it was book value but the IRS changed it)

The Charity uses the money for it's work, the junk yard parts the car out then scraps the leftovers to make their money, and a hefty profit back, you get to write off the ACV on your itemized return with documentation from the charity.

And if I hear that "what did you do for your marriage today" spot again I am going to scream

And right now, another one on RKO, McGruff the Crime Dog: "...standing behind them on the checkout line. When they open their wallets, I take a picture of their driver's license...with my
cell phone camera. It's a snap!"
