A day in the life of a lamptimer

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but does KAZG have a morning show? One morning last week, I heard a group of people (I think it was 2 guys, 1 female) on the station, having a discussion about checking voicemail on their cell phones. If this was not their morning show (if such a show exists), what was it?

Well they do have that wacky "PSRA-in-the-morning" show from 6 AM to monthly sunrise. ;D

"Jock talk from the Lumberyard" airs 7-10 AM with the voices you heard (actually it's a
remote origination and the "join" out of the 7 AM TOH ID is typically a bit dirty).

At 10 the Goldminers are supposed to play the good ol' good ones for an hour, until the
food show almost-a-simulcast with the Nifty 1260 at 11 (KBSZ usually runs 6-8 seconds
behind), however I've heard the troubling news that sometimes there's a colon blow show
on at 10.

For a brief moment tonight, I thought maybe, just maybe, the Lumberyard was broadcasting at night. I heard some obscure 60's rock song (which is not beyond the Lumberyard), but it turned out to be KRDZ booming in with their 212 watts of power all the way from Wray, Colorado near the Nebraska and Kansas state line. Haven't heard this signal before coming in so strong on 1440, but winter-time can warrant some interesting catches at night. Curious that little old Wray, Colorado has more night-time kick than our beloved Lumberyard is allowed to have covering a metro area like Phoenix. I guess we'll just have to wait until April to hear the Lumberyard at night once again! ;D

Also, for justthenumbers, 1440 does have a morning show with Roy Garibaldi called the "Positive Side of Sports and Entertainment" airing from 7:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. I can't stand the show much myself, but the Lumberyard has got to make their dough somehow and airing this and "Culinary Confessions" brings in some sort of money for Sandusky. This is especially helpful since they now don't even want to air commercials during the Goldmine music! :p

The calendar may say December 1, but at the Lumberyard it's still November!

Power up from 52 watts PSRA power to five gallons daytime was at 7:00:51 AM.

I'm sure Gumpdusky will fix this indiscretion in a day or two, just like usual. ::)

There are a bunch of Ancient Modulation stations on 14~Forty that have to be protected by the Goldminers at night. Plus there's one south of Chihuahua Meh-Hee-Co blasting 1kw non-D at night that Lumberyard 14~Forty protects several months of the year with their pre and post authorizations. A multi-tower directional antenna system could probably result in more than 52 watts at night, but the Nurse and I ask this simple question:how much lipstick do you want to put on this oinker?

Carrier dump at 5:31:56 PM.

They couldn't even send a "fake phone" out to the Lumberyard today to reset the lamptimer.

BTW, in a post above I noted this morning's power up was at 7:00:51 AM. I might have read the clock wrong--
it may have been 7:01:51, based on tonight's sign off carrier dump time and the "halfway to 11 seconds"
lamptimer drift during the course of a broadcast day.

With all the screw-ups going on at the Lumberyard, we're beginning to wonder if Derek Anderson is calling the shots on the lamptimer!

At least Derek says he cares & always gives his "Heart & Soul" - but do the Goldminers give their "Heart & Soul" only when it comes to the Hoagy Carmichael/Frank Loesser classic recorded by many artists, including the Four Aces in '52, the Cleftones in '61, Jan & Dean in '61, etc.??? ;)

Too soon for the different Huey Lewis & The News version in '84...not musty-dusty enough for the Goldmine...nah, never! ;D

Those Goldminers nailed it Thursday afternoon: carrier dump (sans legal ID) at 5:15, with apologies to Queen Aretha. No r-e-s-p-e-c-t from the lamptimer!

Yes, Lumberyard 1440 has finally settled in to a deep and dark December daytime.

Can't say the same thing for the KayFuNNsters who apparently think "daytime" this
month means 7 AM-6 PM.

Very true Sarah Palin! ;D

KAZG's night-time authorization could also be a lot worse. Just look at KCEE down in Tucson with their pop classics format. They definitely got the short end of the stick with their 3.2 watts of "massive" night-time power. That's not even good enough to get into South Tucson!

Why do you guys call it "Lumberyard" 1440? Is this because 1440 used to carry the NAU games?

The tower is IN a real lumberyard off East THomas Road

Really? That's kinda cool. It's by 64th Street and the canal in Scottsdale, right? Is the lumberyard abandoned or still functioning?

Also, any idea why they refuse to broadcast at night? It shouldn't cost too much to keep a station on auto-pilot.

They probably have a tube transmitter that can't make the 52 watts of night power.

Im beginning to think that someone at Gumpdumpsky has an emotional attachment to the station and really likes it.. they've been offered well beyond market value to sell it and turned it down.

I worked for a station that had a Collins 550A tube transmitter. They bought an old gates 250 watt tube transmitter designed to be used ony as an emergency backup when pssa authorities were first given to operate their new night power of 29 watts. they used a rheostat to back off the juice going through the box. Sounded crappy, ate through tubes like no tomorrow, but we were on the air.

A while back someone suggested Gumpdusky pick up a couple hundred toasters at Wal-Mart and hook 'em up to the xmttr to reduce power to 52 watts. catfish (no capital C) confirmed it would sound crappier than music played on Ancient Modulation.

But never fear, the Buckeye Boyz have a green suggestion: convert the Lumberyard into a charging station for electric cars, golf carts, bikes, riding mowers, vibrators, etc. The current drain would easily allow Gumpdusky to turn 14~Forty into an all day AND night Goldmine!

Problem solved and we're on our way to Oslo to pick up our Nobel Peace Prize. I'll have Nurse Jeff call Al Gore to see if we can fly on his jet.

DING and an even bigger DING!

This one tips the Fez of Logic.
I actually own a real Algerian fez, and my loving family bought me a fez case.
I must make a point of wearing it this holiday season.

All we need do is couple in a tuned losser coil into the ATU, that goes straight to diode rectifiers which charge up
a battery bank, which could be used as a recharge station for ummm, maybe 1 car.
50,000 watts is actually about 47 horsepower. So you can figure about how much power there is to "save up".

It could be a promotion, Charge up for free and we'll pump Gold All Night Long.
You get free hot-green and gold antenna topper for being green and supporting the Goldmine.

Maybe Obama will lend you the spare 747. You can use the callsign "Fez One." ;)

A little after 9:30 this morning, it was Kokomo at the Lumberyard! As in Beach Boys, 1988.

Not a big deal I guess, since it's a song by a '60s heritage group; it also has been a semi-regular
on KOOL-FM even before '80s material was added to the regular rotation.

Then, following the song that followed Kokomo--two minutes of dead air on Lumberyard 1440.
Carrier stayed on, but nothing else. Funny, that when programming resumed, the first thing
aired was a legal ID! Now why can't Gumpdusky be as conscientious at sign-on and sign-off? ;D

Our friends over at the Goldmine were really good today with sign-off dumping the carrier this evening at exactly 5:15 P.M. Of course, there was no legal ID or anything, but at least the sign-off time was right.

Now if only Moe Ansari and the gang at KFNN could be more like the Lumberyard! ;D
