A day in the life of a lamptimer

asugeorge1 said:
Just heard a new bumper during the music marathon on the Lumberyard promoting their new website. Was pretty simple,
just asked listeners that if they wanted to find out more about the Goldmine to go to http://www.kazg1440.com.

Gumpdusky should ask KOOL to hire Steve Goddard's voice for a one-shot deal so he can
record a "go to our website" liner for Lumberyard 1440. ;)

From another current thread...

okay...enough's enough: it's March and nothing from the doc?

Exactamente. If the MasterBlogger leaving KT'R wasn't enough to bring Akbar out...
of hiding ;D...you'd figure a new month in Phoenix daytime AM radio would be!

Gumpdusky is still (at least) a day late resetting the lamptimer for the March times
(6:45 AM-6:30 PM). Yup, it was still February today at the Lumberyard.

Wednesday, as March sign-off carrier dump time approached, we find Lumberyard 1440
airing a high school basketball tournament. (Couldn't KDUS run the game? It appeared
1060 was just doing jock talk as 6:30 PM approached.)

Whadaya know, at 6:33:30 PM LST* the lamptimer does its thing and dumps the carrier
and the game disappears. No power drop to 52 watts (I know, catfish with a "c"--the old
Ampliphase can't do it ;)), or even to the KAZG PSSA power, whatever that is.

Q: Did they do a legal ID at sign-off? Inquiring minds want to know!
A: Of course not. ::)

*: Lamptimer Standard Time. Do not set your watch by it! ;D

Ah, one legitimate reason to ask for streaming audio out of the Goldmine...to keep those high school games running online past the dump time!

...oh, and so we, the curious in Ohio, can hear the Goldmine from the comfort of our living room. Heh.

All is well tonight over at the Lumberyard. Per the FCC March sunset time, the Goldmine signed off at 6:30 P.M. MST and 18 seconds right after "Sunny Afternoon" by the Kinks finished playing on the AM radio. The very beginning of "There's a Kind of Hush" by the Herman's Hermits started when the carrier dumped thanks to the lamp timer. Good job with sign-off tonight Sandusky! ;D

As is usual over at the Lumberyard, they are a day late and a dollar short with the monthly sign-off times. Perhaps it's Sandusky's year-long April Fool's Day joke, but our friends over at KAZG signed off at 6:34 P.M., still clinging to the sunset sign-off time for March (and including four minutes for the drifting Lamptimer). Since the Lamptimer seems to always run a day late with the new month sign-on and sign-off times, tomorrow should bring the correct April sign-off time of 7:00 P.M. Also, with the new month, it should be the end of the pre-sunrise early morning power-up we've grown accustomed to all winter long. The April sunrise sign-on time is 6:00 A.M. Stay tuned as we see what tomorrow brings! :D

This past weekend, there were some interesting happenings over at the Lumberyard. As you all may remember, this time last year, we were celebrating the fun weekend where KAZG decided to broadcast at night. This wonderful event was short lived, however, as it only lasted two nights. Hoping that perhaps that event would repeat itself this year, I was listening this past weekend to see if there was anything strange. As I mentioned earlier, KAZG was a day late with the new April sign-off time of 7:00 P.M. and the lamptimer was reset this past Saturday for the new times. The carrier dumped on Saturday at 7:04 P.M. and static reigned supreme on the 1440 frequency. But, instead of changing the station, I kept it on 1440 remembering last year's epic event. Sure enough, at 7:08 P.M., the carrier came back on right in the middle of a song at a reduced power (perhaps the 500 watts pre-sunrise authorization). You could tell it was a reduced power because there was some serious skywave interference down where I was in Gilbert. Unfortunately, this rare treat was short lived because around 7:15 P.M., the carrier dumped yet again right in the middle of the Dixie Cups and the "Chapel of Love." Seems like one of the engineers over at Sandusky realized what was going on and pulled the plug on the potential overnight Oldies marathon. KAZG did not sign back on anytime the rest of the night and the event did not repeat itself last night.

So exactly what was going on over at the Lumberyard this past weekend? ??? Since this sort of weird event seems to happen at the same time every year, I wonder if the computer is pre-programmed to broadcast at night every April? Last year, it also happened on April 2nd and the only thing that seemed to stop it were the Sandusky engineers pulling the plug.

I sincerely wish that it wasn't so taboo for Sandusky to broadcast the Lumberyard all night long because we need us some Goldmine oldies after sunset here in Phoenix! :)

What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is a goin' on at Lumberyard 14~Forty? For the first time ever, they showed in the all important 6+ ratings with a blazing 0.1 !! No doubt the Goldminers and Mrs Gumpdusky will be partying like it's Nineteen 59 along the banks of the Crosscut Canal. This is bigger than the Master Blogger's resignation; KTVK's Guess The First 100 degree day; Magic Johnson's rimshot triple play purchase, and KT'R beating KFWhyEye 6+ combined!

That was hilarious! Thanks for posting!

Just in case you needed to know this...

Lumberyard 1440 was a day late again this month with the correct sign-off time.
"Correct" of course being a word subject to the accuracy of the lamptimer.

What in the world is going on over at KAZG? There is some weird Hindu or Indian show on right now. I just tuned in around 5:40 P.M. and instead of hearing those great Goldmine oldies, I heard them playing some Hindu music. Using a nifty I-POD application, I figured out the song was "Gazab Ka Hai Din" from the movie "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak", which was an Indian Bollywood movie released in 1988. The KAZG website says that Rock and Roll oldies should be playing right now.

So can someone tell me what's going on? ??? I sure hope this is not some sort of format change. The old Lumberyard is sure full of surprises!

Well as of 6:10 P.M., it's back to the Goldmine oldies. Thank goodness! ;D

I don't know what was going on in the 5:00 P.M. hour over at the Lumberyard, but it was definitely strange. I'm all for serving the valley's Hindu and Indian population with some ethnic programming, but on KAZG? I'm not too sure about that. It could have been a pirate, but it sure didn't seem like it. Anyone with inside information, (i.e. catfish with a "c") please do tell! ;)

With the mystery of the Thursday evening Indian music still unsolved, the Lumberyard signed off tonight at 7:18 P.M. and 12 seconds, a few minutes past the prescribed 7:15 P.M. sign-off time for the month of May. Actually, right before sign-off, the Goldmine provided us with a true nugget of an oldie from 1965, "I've Just Seen a Face" by the Beatles, which was released in the United States by Capitol Records on the "Rubber Soul" album, but was released in the UK on the "Help!" album. Definitely a nice deep oldie that you don't hear on most radio stations!

Bollywood has come to the banks of the Crosscut Canal as the Goldminers take a two hour break every afternoon for Radio Khushi http://kazg1440.com/ As someone else put it so well, Gumpdusky makes money with Lumberyard 14~Forty only when they're not playing music. So using that logic, guess they aint losing money after local sunset (lamptimer standard time) ;)

I still can't believe the station's OFFICIAL website tells the tale of the mythical lamptimer, and actually admits to incorrect signoff times! Not to mention featuring Lauren's excellent video embedded on the site.

Then again, I still can't believe KAZG HAS an official website...

I can't believe they promote the website on the air ...and I'm still drivin' a p.o.s. Gremlin ???

I drove around the block a few extra times trying to figure out what the Hindu/Arabic techno power hour was. Classic oldies with a dash of Indian flair!
