A few DirecTV subscribers cancelling service because of XM

Here's an interesting story I found this morning from the Cleveland Plain Dealer. It looks like a few DirecTV subscribers who were fans of the Music Choice service are dropping the satellite TV provider for cable systems that carry MC.

>> And they think Music Choice is better than XM? Get real!!!

Sometimes...you simply don't want a DJ yappin' it up in the background. In fact, it's really distracting to hear the DJ chatter in a neighborhood bar I hang out in; especially when it's busy. They use DirecTV for their background music. On Thanksgiving evening, a friend was frustrated due to the lack of talk-free music on DirecTV while having some friends over. We ended up putting in a CD due to the DJ chatter on XM.

I'm not slamming XM by any means...but DirecTV should have kept Music Choice AND added XM. Both services have their place and both should be offered.

When Dish added Sirius to their line-up, they never removed their Dish CD or Muzak programmed channels. Dish did it right by adding more choices. Why couldn't DirecTV do the same?

yea right..the 15 seconds of dj chatter for 30 seconds an hour is really annoying..get over it..xm rules!! music choice played the same songs over and over again..i hear restaraunts with fm playing..full 10 minute stop sets..im not buying this one..
______________
note to the NAB..satellite radio..its worth paying for!!

Dropping a video service (DirecTV) because of the audio service they provide (XM) is absurd. Those who claim they've dropped DirecTV because of XM must have deeper issues with DirecTV than the music provider. XM is being used as a scapegoat in this case. As a DirecTV and XM subscriber, I think the partnership makes perfect sense and I'm glad it happened.

For every 1 that drops Direct TV, there's probably 5 + signing for XM.
Once the people getadjusted with XM, most likely will stay.

You've got a point...I work in a restaurant with an XM radio and it the stations with the fewest DJ interruptions seem to be the most popular with my co-workers. And Terry "Motormouth" Young talks for quite a bit more than 15 seconds. (Bless him!) Bobby Ocean, on the other hand, does not.

I dropped DirecTV and got digital cable in 2001. Now I got a MyFi. So I guess I'm pretty much set (although I listen to XM WAY more then Music Choice)

I can see why people are dropping it and going with cable. A lot of businesses used Music Cboice as their background music.

And I have heard XM in public places. The nursing home where my sister works plays Sunny in the lobby. And a McDonalds in Waukegan, IL also plays Sunny.
______________

I was eating in a Burger King yesterday and they had xm. I have DIRECTV and I love xm (I had SIRIUS earlier this year but dropped it when Air America Radio left) - their playlists are deep and I've been a Ron & Fez fan since 1993. To cancel it simply because of a music service change is silly. To me, Music Choice was quite repetitive in their playlists.

I am a DirectTV Customer and am THRILLED they offer XM instead of Music Choice. Those people are stubborn

I have DirectTV and do not plan to drop it because of XM. I did like Music Choice with no "announcements" I used it as background music at times.

NOW with that said, I may be getting satellite radio. Which is better XM or Sirius? I have seen posts that both have "sound quality" issues. I assume that the breaks are only on the "free service" Is that true?

I've had XM for a year and a half and love it. XM and Sirius I'm sure have their pros and cons depending on your musical tastes and interests, but in general they're very comparable. XM does have more music channels than Sirius and there are no commercial breaks on any of the wholly-dedicated music channels. A very few of the music channels have DJs but only part of the time. DJ chatter is considerably less than that of your typical terristrial station.

Which satellite service is better depends entirely upon what you want. My personal opinion is that, overall, XM has better music variety while Sirius has a better presentation. However, that's not necessarily true when you break down specific formats and compare channel-for-channel, and you might not agree with me on what constitutes a better variety of music or a better presentation. As for the sound quality issue, FM actually sounds better than both services to me. However, between the two services, I think XM has the better sound quality, though that could just be the receivers I have.

My advice is to try each one of the services. You can get a three day trial subscription to their online services for free. It won't answer all of your questions about sound quality, but it will answer your questions about programming. I also recommend you subscribe to both at the same time and when you have plenty of free time to listen. If you subscribe to one and then the other, the last one you subscribe to will sound better.

I have DirecTV also and never heard XM previously to it being added to DirecTV's lineup, but I like what I hear so far. Not that I didn't like music choice, but, for the most part, the music is far better on XM than it is on music choice. I would prefer having no interruptions as before (as was the case on music choice), but it's really not that big a deal. From the channels I'm listening to mostly (Watercolors, The Heart, Sunny, etc), there's only talking once or twice an hour, and it's not that time-consuming when it happens. It sure beats having to listen to broadcast radio, with 10 minutes of commercials breaks, and the really annoying habit that stations have about telling me what station I'm listening to every song or every other song.

Sirius goes deeper into the rock and rap formats; but it's at the expense of niche formats in other genres (e.g., Sirius has nothing like Sunny or Cinemagic or a true folk channel). Other things equal, if you're into rock & rap (& hip hop) I'd recommend Sirius. If you're into other genres (see above, as well as a 50s only or a '40s, and others), go with XM. Both services are allocated equal (tho pithy) bandwidth, so the specialization is good -- I'd hate to see XM and Sirius identical.

that is insane..xm 40 deep tracks is much deeper than anything on sirius..also xm 41 the boneyard has about a 2000 song playlist vs the 350 on hair nation..xm is far superior to sirius on the rock channels..
______________

What I was saying is that Sirius devotes a larger percentage of its channels to rock, rap, hip hop, or whatever its called at the expense of other formats. I didnt mean to comment on the deepness of the playlists (as opposed to number of channels) as everyone knows XM has a deeper playlist than Sirius for every channel for which comparison can be made -- be it rock, jazz, or classical etc. XM, on the other hand devotes a greater percentage of its channels to the niche non-rock etc formats. In other words, Sirius is programmmed more like the FM dial, but with less talk:(
