A few Eastern NC Tidbits

Finally some interesting news down east. According to WAGO's magazine that they send out to their listeners they are planning to put on a second full power station on 91.1 FM. I believe they have 20kw and are located in Aurora. They said it may be a few years before they could sign it on however. This should give them great coverage in New Bern, Washington, and Williamston.

And speaking of Williamston, Lifeline Radio (WIAM AM 900) is going to be signing on their new FM at 97.7 soon. The calls will be WODR "Open Door Radio". Not sure of the sign on date because they are still waiting on all the lawyers, since the station was owned by Bishop Willis and he owes lots of fines.

This would be the former WURB, no? I certainly hope they have made improvements on their transmitter site. For some photos of the 97.7 TX site in its former glory under the good Bishop, check out: http://members.tripod.com/e92fm/wurb.html

Does Willis own anything now? WELS FM always did amazingly well in the ratings. I've never seen beyond the edifice on the main drag in Kinston, but it looks decent.

Yes it is URB. Still is for now, until they take it over. No improvements have been made as of yet that I know of. But they will be making them soon. Willis stil owns 100.1 so will still hit most of the same coverage area.

Wow...those xmitter site photos are pretty rough! I have seen LPFM sites, translators, and even old AM sites that are more impressive than those. With 300 watts of forward power, plus the power of the exciter...then the line loss, what kind of ERP do you think they have?? 100..50 watts??

And speaking of Williamston, Lifeline Radio (WIAM AM 900)

Re: A few Eastern NC Tidbits, nicer digs

Looking at the Willis pics reminded me I put together a page with pics from PRE. I thought I had posted it here, but it doesn't seem so.

So, Link

I think you'll find them a much more enjoyable working environment.

wow..someone found some VERy old pics of mine through there...anyway..some updates...

WBXB is at a full 50KW now...with a unknown transmitter..well..one that actually works this time...they sound decent but with a nice ground loop hum from their tower lights......BUZZZ........BUZZZ......BUZZ.......BUZZZ......
I think they have computer automation now...but unsure..I haven't been to neither site sice I took those pictures..so

WURB is...well..URB still...they took the old Harris at WBXB and shipped it down to windsor where its holding down the fort...suprisingly it hasn't blown up yet like the CCA 2.5kw tranny that was down there did (reason why you saw the 300 watt booster in the rack)

The Bishop's daughter, Celestine (aka "Spirit Broadcasting") has WGTM 590 in Wilson. I worked there 20+ years ago, pre-Willis, and it was a dump then. I visited there about 5 years ago and they were still using the same equipment! Only now, the front reception/sales area has been converted into a religious supply store, complete with huge colorful hats, patent medicines, and choir robes.

These folks have no shame.

I'm surprised Curtis or someone in that league hasn't grabbed WGTM. Down on the low end of the dial at 590 they have a monster 5 kw signal that is mostly interference-free even at night. It gets into Raleigh to the west and Greenville to the east very well. In its present state it's comparable to a Pax TV station; i.e., a waste of spectrum and electricity.

Does anyone have airchecks of WGTM when it was "The Mighty Five Ninety in Wide Awake Wilson"?

I heard WBXB yesterday... the audio is very distorted, especially liners, almost to the point that you can't even understand them. I also noticed that the signal really doesn't carry far at all... beyond Windsor I was getting all kinds of static on it.

WURB is on the air and relaying some AM straight from an AM receiver, whine and all.

Tower question... who owns the tower on 32, just north of Edenton? It's on the left if you're heading toward Sunbury. I drove by there last night and noticed that all of the lights are lighting solid, no blinking. Also it appeared the top beacon was not lit at all.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: WBXB and related questions...

97.7 is TEMPORARILY broadcasting WIAM AM 900. They were just trying to get something on the air. They should have the STL up this weekend and debut with a true FM sound by the first of the year. Their new calls will be WGTI.

Yeah, and I hear they aren't real good at making their note payments either. I'd frankly rather see a station go dark than have to suffer through being cobbled together like most of the Willis stations. It's a shame and a disgrace to our industry. I wonder if he'd entertain an offer for every single one of his stations in one 'fell swoop'? Naah, he'd probably just take the money and buy more stations to destroy. Sorry for the negativity. I just don't have a lot of patience for folks who don't take pride in what they are blessed to have.

Re: WBXB and related questions...

97.7 now got their STL going and are on the air. I think they still have some work to do but at least they are on the air.
