A few Mid-South observations

WDIA-AM continues to bring back DJs to some dayparts after the Clear Channel layoff binge last year and the year before. Several months ago afternoons and early evenings were filled again with local DJs. I was a bit startled last weekend to hear the longtime voice of WDIA himself Michael Jefferies (the peppy, sort of high pitched guy who also does KOKY-FM Little Rock) on the All Blues Saturday. My frequent listening of WDIA only goes back to the web streaming era (late 90s-early 2000s) and am wondering how long this guy has been associated with WDIA? I believe he is on a mid-90s aircheck I have of WDIA doing voicers.

KOKY-FM also finally has a reliable stream. Really enjoyed their Saturday night old school show last week. What a throwback! KOKY has changed little in recent years with all of the contraction and cutbacks in urban radio. The show sounded exactly like something I may have heard more than a decade ago when they started a shortlived stream. An exception is that they have added Baisden the afternoons in recent years. And it is great to hear a station that still plays real old school with deeper cuts (not just 80s and 90s stuff)

it is true KOKY has not changed much. The PD is the same person they have had for years. They do play deeper cuts than your cookie cutter UAC station but they are starving those that were teens and in their 20's during the 80's and 90's. The joke around town is they play dead school music rather than old school music meaning they tend to play music that is much older than someone that is 40 to 46 years old would want to hear. They do play a nice variety during the Baisden show for that age group. Everynow and then, I would like to hear Troop or New Edition or Montel Jordan or even some Levert, how about LSG? You almost hear none of that. I don't want to hear Clarence Carter - I be Strokin every other day.
