A Few Random Nightime AM Catches

Recently ID'd three stations, two that I'm positive I never ID'd before. None of them exceptionally far from home (Northeast Missouri), but when it comes to DX, it doesn't take much to satisfy me ;D

1160 KHPP Waukon, Iowa
Had to look it up on the map, I'd never heard of the town. Northeast corner of IA, similar to my location in MO. Got about 10 minutes of good oldies from them. The former WJJD Chicago was a regular catch on 1160 many years ago, they had a Country format in the late 70's.

1310 WIBA Madison, Wisconsin
A short one, but at least I got an ID. 1310 belongs to semi-local KOKX Keokuk, IA during daylight.

1330 KWLO Waterloo, Iowa
Think I've heard it before, but never logged it. No biggie, you wouldn't have to go very far north of here to hear it during the daytime, though WRAM Monmouth, IL is somewhat closer.

These took almost no effort. DXing the semi-graveyard frequencies is my favorite, but it takes too much patience for me to do it very often ::)

Not bad. I haven't heard KHPP yet (which is actually pretty close to me; probably the same distance as from you), as 1160 is blocked by WYLL Chicago, which is VERY strong here at night in the Duluth, MN area. 1310 WIBA is a regular; I think they were running Air America a few years ago. Madison is a liberal city. Never heard KWLO either, but it shouldn't be hard to. WLOL Minneapolis (Relevant Radio) is usually the dominant station on that frequency, though I'm sure a tight null could bring it in on the right night.

My hometown is indeed a liberal place but WIBA isn't. Air America is on 92.1 FM and 1670 AM is also a liberal talker.

What equipment are you using (antennas, receivers, filters, etc)?

Hmmm, maybe I'm confusing them with somebody else.

You know who really annoys me from your town, though? WTSO. Their IBOC smear covers 1060 and 1080.

Just my GE Model 7-4975B (Vintage 1980) and the radio in my 2003 Taurus. Not to discredit myself :-\ but I own no fancy equipment. I've enjoyed DXing (particularly AM) for about 30 years now (hence the 78 in my user ID). I'd never presume to compete with most of you guys, but I like to contribute what I can, and someday own some powerful gear. 8)

Even though it's Central U.S. in a way, Wisconsin was a pretty tough enough catch for we Long Islanders. I mean, WOKY 920 was a faithful regular all night for a spell, and WBAY 1360 once broadcast a special test DX broadcast and was widely heard -- the only thing on the frequency.

Plus, a more casual neighborhood DXer, using one of those old push-button Grundigs, picked up a 620 station 'that had a bunch of T's and J's and M's in the letters'. So that gave our little clique near JFK airport a colossal 3 stations.

That might've been *it* for we East Coasters as far as Wisconsin went.
A rough glance at the map of the U.S. has DE, ME, NH, WI, VT ..... and perhaps not too many more states than that ..... without huge signals.

It'd be interesting to read about what AM stations from ME, RI, NH and VT, for example, are logged in MO.

I can say for the many years I lived just an hour or so from DXNEMO that I had never heard anything from DE, ME, NH, or VT. In fact I never heard anything from those states until I moved to Ottawa Canada. The easiest stations to log from WI would be WKSH 1640 from Pewaukee (just outside of Milwaukee) and WTDY 1670 Madison. Both are regular catches here, even on an "average" radio.
