A FEW RECENT DX CATCHES ON AM

680 News from Toronto [CFTR] was being received very strongly (enough to hear clearly in WSCR's IBOC Schlop) from 4:00-4:40 a.m., early Monday 8/10.

That's a bit rare isn't it? I have received CFTR but not in quite awhile.

There were some bad storms in the Toronto area last night according to 680 News - perhaps that storm messed up their tower phasing or the station was somehow reset to the daytime signal pattern? I also have not heard 680 News in 'ages' - it's usually WCTT, KFEQ or WPTF.

I hear CFTR all the time in the Chicago area. Not very well, but its usually there. While the storms may have messed up the DA, this station normally has a terrific signal regardless. Even better than 740 in most parts of the "GTA". Stick is actually in Hamilton, right on the shore of Lake Ontario.....right off the QEW freeway, and near one of my frequent local pit stops (Harvey's).

BTW, where I am this week, Atlanta is the "top dog" on 680. Good signal, usually with WPTF in the background.

I usually get WPTF in Chicago & rarely CFTR. Go figure?

680 News [CFTR] was coming in again around 4:00 a.m., however, it was weaker than the night before.

Maybe that happens to be a good time for propagation as it's close to Toronto sunrise.

Yeah, that hadn't occurred to me - great point. Well, CFTR was not audible here at the approximate time frame I heard them the last two early a.m.'s. (3-5 a.m.) I wouldn't quit trying for those of you that would like something more challenging other than CFZM 740, CJBC 860, CFRB 1010, CHUM 1050, CHKT 1430, CHIN 1540, CHHA 1610, CINA 1650 & CHTO 1690. The only other AMs I don't have from Toronto is CJCL 590 and CFMJ 640. Those two will probably only be possible here in No. IL if their DA system malfunctions.

CKDO is another relatively easy catch in Northern Illinois on 1580. They're about 45 minutes east of downtown Toronto in Oshawa, ON. Rimshot signal into the eastern part of the 'GTA". Agree that CJCL and CFMJ will be next to impossible. CFMJ overall has a good signal, but not in our direction. CJCL has a rather severe pattern day and night.

CKDO 1580 has replaced CKOC 1150 for my favourite Canadian Oldies Station. Since W-YELL (WYLL) the 1160 Biblecaster has boosted their power at night to 50kW along N/T W-HOUBY (WHBY) 1150 Appleton, WI, to 25kW, that combination has made it next to impossible to hear CKOC in the far NW suburbs of Chicago.

Ironically, CKOC is a much easier catch from the Quad Cities than it is from the Chicago area now. Basically thanks to the aforementioned interlopers. Where they're absent, CKOC still shines through.

My main gripe with CKOC (other than all the voice tracking) is that they could use a higher quality stream. Still....I play it on my iPhone through my car stereo. Perfect solution for WYLL/WHBY etc. day or night.

How's the MW DX in the panhandle--are you still there?

Not bad....it's been relatively thunderstorm free, which is a bit unusual. I'll try to post some bandscan type stuff within the next day or two if I get the chance.

PS: **MY 800TH POST!!!**

Both were very faint in the background. The ticking and beeping of RR cut in for a minute and then faded. No voice could be heard - but the tones cut right through the mush. Amazing how much farther tones can travel than voice! As for WBZ, during the early evening I heard talk under KTWO and could tell it was WBZ. Unfortunately, as the night wore on, WHO's hash-jammer slaughtered the frequency and even relatively nearby KTWO was obliterated by it.

IBOC on AM is just an abomination!!

Heard WISS 1100 Berlin, WI this morning, 8/20, around 6:15 a.m. with a good signal level on their 'critical hours' power of 1.6 kW omnidirectional.
Looking forward to catching WMBE 840 Chilton, WI with their 20kW when it signs on...

I haven't done much AM DXing because it's the summer but I decided to get back to it tonight and I got one catch I've been hoping for. Getting something from Miami in Tampa may not sound like much but I've never been able to pick up WQAM in Tampa, maybe because of the local station's signal on 570. I've since moved to a different part of town and I guess that made a difference. So it's around 1:40 in the morning and I picked up my Walkman, tuned to 560, and heard WQAM with an ID. It was a weak signal at first but slowly got better, faded away to nothing, and then came back.
