A fond WAAf memory

I guess becuase there are so many threads here comparing stations now to what they used to be, maybe that is what made this pop into my head. I remember when waaf was a balls out, self promotion machine. Although they spent 90% of their time on air talking about BCN and how BCN "sucked" they spent their other 10% or so trying to convince the world of their superiority and integrity. Enter "Real Rock TV" easily the worst produced show I have seen in years, the productiion values were horrible, a half step above a cable access show BUT it did have a guerilla feel at times which is what they were trying to achieve and did so successfully especially for a corproate rock station like wbcn (corproate in the sense that they were owned by a big corproation and had a tight playlist although they tried to deny it).

I remember thinking how clever it was that they had produced an info-mercial for this radio station every week and how no one had thought to do it before. So theyre paying for a 30 minute TV spot for their station, we didnt think to do it, that's brilliant!.Generally the show was pretty bad when the regular jocks hosted it, their segments mostly consisted of introducing baby bands that had played in their studio, "here's grey flap on real rock TV".......awful, then O and A would host occaisionally and do bits that were pretty damned good. Meantime the Beavis like 15 year old aaf deciples would call me and try to convince me that waaf was "big time" because they had their own TV show, where was wbcn's?....I would reply that we could have one too if we wanted to pay for time on a spanish language TV channel,,,,, but it was always a useless argument with those dopes.

I had taped the program one night because they kept promising a big surprise at the end, so I came home from a show or something drunk off my arse and sat down and turned on the gizmo to watch. it was the usual aaf in studio performances spliced in with shaky camera work and jocks introducing videos from static X and maybe sevendust. At the very end the credits roll and then the screen goes black for a moment: The next image was that of the WBCN Hummer being towed away on Boylston street because we had not paid the hundreds of dollars worth of parking tickets AGAIN or something, and so here I sit in my living room, drunk watching the WBCN HUMMER towed away on TV......... I turned to my grilfriend and said "jesus, they really do just f*cking HATE Us"!.......

........I then laughed for about a half hour, replaying that clip over and over again, one of the funniest things I have ever seen, it made no impact on us (WBCN) but I knew they had to have been high fiving each other in the halls of waaf when they put that tape in the show,.....I laughed, it was damned funny just becuase it was so surreal and weird...and they never thought we had any sense of humor about oruselves?. I just thought wow they really are on our asses, if they're following the Hummer around with a camera! waiting for who knows what?!.

Good times!

Yeah, that was Rage TV or something. It was a semi-indie kind of show if I remember right. WAAF's show aired on Telemundo.

I thought that the WAAF show was on Univision affiliate WUNI-27? Unless you're referring to when WUNI was the Telemundo affiliate.

I remember that time...when I didn't meet Nik Carter at the Velvet Revolver show!

That was awesome!

BTW...people might not know this, but Nik and I REALLY have never met face-to-face.

i remember when the WAAF vs WBCN "war" made it to mtv...waaf had the limp bizkit super secret show location setting up...someone on bcn leaked out the info, and aaf had to stop giving out clues and just say where it was...aaf filmed that concert for the real rock tv. anyways the "war" between the two stations was shown on mtv and fred was just laughing while sitting in the limo as bcn leaked out the information.

No actually Travis he wasnt laughing, he was bummed!.... I remember that it was Juanita (one of BCN's best part timers) who called me that morning and was asking me if I knew the location of the "top secret" Limp Bizkit show, I didnt know, Shred was walking into work saw the set up and told Juanita who went right on the air with it, Fred looked bummed in the car, his manager then lamented "Bcn just gave the location, I gotta call aaf" and a vacant eyed Fred says "Oh yeah, they got a war going on" he then called in to AAF being the quick thinker that he is and said "No, when we come to town we set up fake stages to throw people off, Ill give you the real stage location on aaf"......after a few breaks doing that they finally lamented "Ok that's the location".

That was also a tribte to WAAF's stupidity and arrogance, to think they could do that in our backyard, literally a block away from BCn and think that we wouldnt blow up their spot!.

Dopes.
