A Former KFI-er Violates the First Rule of Broadcasting...

Former KFI-er Karel, of Karel and Andrew fame, forgot the first rule of broadcasting a couple days ago at KGO (sitting at his home in Long Beach broadcasting via an ISDN line to KGO). It has now developed into a minor national controversy.

Remember...

The first rule of broadcasting, always assume the microphone is on.

The second rule of broadcasting, follow the first rule.

Funny, I was thinking the "First Rule of Broadcasting" was:

"Never quit your day job!"

Will the FCC fine KGO? Though technically this was an accident, somebody left the ISDN line up during the news, but so was Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction a mistake and unforseen by CBS.

The infamous "Puppetry of the Penis" interview that KRON-TV in San Francisco involved a brief shot of accidental nudity. The FCC was apathetic to it being a mistake, and they fined the station $27,500.

According to several news reports, "Karel" has been suspended indefinitely. His upcoming 11/8/08 Saturday evening show was to be pre-empted for a football game broadcast anyway; we'll see what happens in the following week(s).

Generally "Suspended Indefinitely" is management speak for Goodbye. Likely they have to bring in the lawyers to decide if they can fire him with out pay or do they have to buy out his contract. When Imus got the ax he got a partial settlement as I recall but this, if they are fined, may be justification for a dismissal for cause.

All other issues and political alignments aside... you've got to admit it's hilarious!

I've read a couple of different excuses from Karrel... "engineer left the mic open." "I was on a wireless mic in my home studio and that mic didn't have an off switch." "I was running a chat room at the same time during my show." yada yada yada. Where is the personal responsibility? The KGO engineer was also fired... but if the tirade had never been uttered, none of this would have happened. How difficult is it to keep yourself reined in during a 4 hour shift, even during "breaks"? If your job comes first, it's not difficult at all.
