A Glance At The Spring ARB:

Programming lunacy rears its ugly head in the book:

WWL AM - #5 with a 5.9, down from a 8.0. True that if you add WWL-FM with its 2.6, WWL would have a 8.5, which would make it #3, but it seems that competing with themselves is stupid. It just *looks bad* for the venerable WWL-AM to be #5, regardless of its sister station propping its arse up. An earlier poster was right, time to dump WWL 105.3 and go back to oldies. With somebody knowledgable programming it, not Andy Holt. Oldies at 105.3 would be good for at least a 4 or 5 but Andy destroyed it once and doesn't have what it takes to program an oldie station.

WRNO - Dead. Give it up and go back to the classic "Rock". Admit your mistake, you stupid consultants, and do the right thing.

KKND - Dead. They could go back to the powerhouse Oldies 106.7 as well. Or modern country. Or Spanish. Anything but this horse that's been beaten to death.

DIVA - Ditto. Starting to stink big time by the numbers.

WIST - Give it up, George Buck. If RNO can't do it, you certainly can't with this rusty pile of junk. Bring back the old call letters and simulcast with the FM.

You have to wonder, are the people running these stations stubborn or stupid after all this time?

Please add your thoughts on the new book.

Beernuts,
I can agree with most of your post except for one...unfortunately, the WTIX-AM call letters now belongs to a station in South Carolina (I think).
Thank goodness for CD players!

Yeah, you right. And IPods.

But pardon my naiveity, as my short stay in radio here was over 20 years ago, but two things to consider:

1. George Buck re-assigned the WTIX letters to another of his own stations, gospel as I recall, somewhere around South Carolina. So couldn't he change them back, especially with the fractional numbers I assume WTIX-AM is getting these days in SC as a gospel AM (if I recall the story correctly)? And...

2. As a worst case scenario, aren't there dozens of consultant-suck stations around the country that call themselves "KISS" even though those letters are not their official calls? Couldn't "WIST New Orleans" be mumbled once an hour at ID time, and hammer in "WTIX" even though it would technically now be considered a slogan?

wwl am/fm has a combined nearly 10 share. its not going away. i listen to wwl-fm. i don not listen to wwl-am. i dont like the static and buzz and fade outs at night. i like the clear version on fm. plus its good for saints football. tv kills am. doesnt affect fm ;D

Good points by both of you,
I enjoy good conversation. Now if only I can get the Saints radio network to be in-sync with the TV feed.

i have directtv and it is synched to the milisecond. as the plays happen! now on the antenna there is like a 7 second delay. ;)

Smash...
Good to know on the Directtv/synced with WWL radio thing... none of my delivery systems (over-air, cable or digital cable) sync up well.
You may have just pushed me over the edge to convet to directtv.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, WWL runs the Saints games with no delay on while local broadcast t.v. does. That sounds dangerous in this day and age. WWL is one sideline f-bomb away from a $250k fine.

no wwl is on a 7 second delay as is directv. it equals out to being in sync ;)

How can anyone really believe these numbers anyway? some stations (latin focused mainly) dont show up for a couple of books then they appear with a 1.5. Ive made my thoughts well known on 870 but it is the station for news, which should be a priority for the forseeable future in this city. urbans dominate with half the listeners still not back? The urbans dominate but the gospels stay flat? a northshore station I can barely pickup in the car doubles its 12+? Both "classic rock" stations fall? Seems to me the ratings company is grasping at straws to find locals to participate in the system. Does anyone know if the ratings company can or does keep going back to the same people over and over again to rate?

On some other things, I like what Citadel has done with both KKND and WMTI. MTI seems to lean to more of a "magic" playlist now and the new country is certainly better that that rockin country attempt. Diva is a joke though. what a waste.

Why bring oldies back on 105.3? if entercom had a brain they would flip to country and go after NOE. That's if you think the numbers are correct.

from my understanding George Buck does not own WTIX-FM. I could be wrong but Ive asked the 690 people and they say they have no control over the FM at all.

One last thing- what happened to the cajun station? weren't they showing up in the ratings until this book? Did all the zydeco or whatever listeners move away?

The cajun station is on there.. some idiot listed it as Oldies instead of the Americana it's been listed as

Look for "coastal broadcasting of Larose" and KLRZ.... Coastal only owns 3 radio stations and the other two cannot be picked up in New Orleans.

I agree on Martini doing some changing as it's more of what Magic was about 2 years ago than 101.9 is now... WLMG seems to be getting play lists from Diva with all the Disco era stuff I've been hearing on there ;D

KKND was making headway by going new country (and I was actually starting to listen harder), But since "Trapper John" has taken over, I know I stopped listening due to the music being speeded up like I would find in a northern market.. Not in the south, and espcially not in a market where every body and his brother seems to know music and know there is a difference between WNOE and KKND in music speed.

105.3 going country? Nah.. Most of Louisiana only has two market signals for country (only Alexandria and Baton Rouge have three.. Monroe has two with a third from out of the city with good penetration) and a third would just pull numbers from KKND that much more in my opinion (It would take a full on assult against WNOE to pull their numbers down and it would take a angle such as classic country or like KKND new country only). My vote would be oldies/classic hits or going back to a Hot AC or a AC that isn't as wide as WLMG

Will agree on needing to kill DIVA... two and a half years and never more than mid pack means it needs to be killed and ended... hell most stations like this either sink or swim and DIVA's been sliding slowly for years IMO

I know KANE-AM 1240 Cannot reach but KLEB can be heard in the N.O. as well as KLRZ

True; but I shutter to think about WLMG's playlist. I do ahve to give kudos to martini for their Sunday Brunch.

I still can"t wait for citadel to admit their mistake for KKND. 92.3 would have worked better going for both New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Ok!? Correct me if I am wrong but isn't B-97 Hot AC(CHR-Top-40 or whatever). To me Entercom would be shooting itself in the foot changing 105.3 to programing near to B-97.

Ditto( See above quote about KKND)

KKND:

DIVA:
Ditto( See above quote about KKND) Although oldies on 92.3 may not be a bad idea.

My apologies to RFLA for the messed up reply

may i suggest.

92.3-- flip to classic country ala kwkh shreveport.
106.7-- sports. why not. there are no other music formats left?
martini--oldies.

I will suggest:

106.7 -- going CHR with actual live, local jocks! Go against stale-ass B-97. That station is ALL STEVIE G, ALL THE TIME and that's been enough of a headache! New Orleans has suffered enough of that mess.
HOT 106 -- POWER 106 -- MIX 106 -- STAR 106 -- Z-106... something!!!

92.3 -- Hot AC with the disco crap moved exclusively to a specialty show,

No problem, I know when I comment them html tags can become killer. (secret for me is copy and paste of that quote html tag)

KLRZ:
(I know KANE-AM 1240 Cannot reach but KLEB can be heard in the N.O. as well as KLRZ)

Most people wouldn't listen to a distant AM station like KLEB.. I can hear KANE in Thibodaux sometimes, but would I listen, probably not... I know it can be heard and all but for most, if the quality isn't really good, they won't listen.... I can hear 4 sports stations on AM at my location, but most I know will only listen to the one from Houma (and will complain they can't hear it at night all that well)

Martini 106.1:
(True; but I shutter to think about WLMG's playlist. I do have to give kudos to martini for their Sunday Brunch)

I heard Martini when I went to the northshore recently (I can't sample it due to KXOR and KBZE being local stations to me) and the playlist was average a/c but was surprised on a few country songs on there (Either I haven't realized the amount of crossover or something) but other than the name and maybe one or two songs, it appeared when I sampled a better programed station than WLMG.... LMG used to be very tight on their playlist.. now God knows what you are gonna hear on there.. they are trying to be a a/c,hot a/c and a competitor to Diva apparently.... I'm waiting for the rap any day ;D (Come on let's see grandma with the walker getting down in the doctors office to "Party Like a rockstar")

KKND:
(I still can"t wait for citadel to admit their mistake for KKND. 92.3 would have worked better going for both New Orleans and Baton Rouge. )

The frequency would have been better for Diva (when they were in Baton Rouge on 103.3)

Country would have been over saturated in Baton Rouge (where there is 3 stations currently)...So the 106.7 frequency would have been better for country anyway

But they won't admit to it, I think it was a knee jerk reaction because of NASCAR IMO.. instead of blowing up Diva, they blew up rock and having a half baked CC station wiping them clean...

Don't know if Citadel could put a rocker on 92.3 (I figure there is a non compete on the vacherie tower) But citadel would have been better to scrap the end and go active as what 104.1 has kind of did (other than most of their playlist is recurrants)

My apologies to RFLA for the messed up reply

None needed

I will ask Jeremy if their is a station locally we would base his CHR on? I mean something in playlist like WFMF?
And will say, we can always leave the disco for Magic..they seem to be doing a good job in playing it...

The four sports I assume is 1490 KJIN, 1280 WODT, 1210 Denham Springs, But I am at a loss at the fourth one. Where I live down the bayou from you I can recive the three stated above, but around Cut Off 1490 from Biloxi will start to be heard below KJIN and get worse from Golden Meadow going to Grand Isle. I never could figure out how a 1k station further away cover and overlap another 1k station that is closer.

Is till think oldies on 92.3 would do very well if they would do it right. Oh well at least I have sirius to fall back on.
