A Good Old-Fashioned Radio Traffic War

KGO and KCBS (my #1 and #2 AM presets, not necessarily in that order) seemed to have started a war of words in regard to their traffic reports. For at least a decade, these two AM giants seemed to have a gentleman's agreement that they would both do their traffic on the 8's. Recently I noticed that KGO moved its traffic reports to the 5's, calling it "first traffic." Not to be outdone, KCBS left their traffic on the 8's, but now starts each segment with "first for traffic" and leads out with "the traffic leader, KCBS." Rivalries like this largely disappeared in the 90's as consolidation elimininated many head-to-head format rivalries, so it's refreshing for me to hear to KGO and KCBS duking it out. Rather than declaring one or the other station the winner, I think the real winner here is the listener; who can now get a quality traffic report with no more than a 7 minute wait. Hurray for competition!

This is the single most exciting development in Bay Area radio in years! I tune in sometimes just to hear if Kim Wonderley might yell "BITE IT, KGO!"

The other day, I was certain that Joe Vincent was about to totally slag KCBS, but he backed off. But you could feel the tension through the speakers!

Hooray for competition! Yeah!!!

Apolgies to Joe (Vincent) McConnell, but I can't get excited about this one. Maybe it's only me, but I never seem to hear the Sig Alert about the freeway I'm on until I'm already totally stuck in traffic and can't get out of it.

It seems like the traffic report I hear just minutes before I get stuck never mentions the freeway or bridge I'm on. By the time they do, it's too late to escape.

Traffic reports make more sense cities like LA where you have dozens of wide multi-lane surface streets you can drive to avoid the freeways. I nostalgically remember those scenic mountain passes like Coldwater and Laurel Canyons, which let you laugh at the Hollywood and San Diego Freeways, and still get you from West LA or Hollywood into the Valley...except for the arrogant guy in the Porsche who tries to run your Corolla off the road.

Damn that San Francisco Bay!

Wow, BossRadioDJ, you're pretty heavy on the sarcasm this evening! ;D

I'll admit my post may not be that exciting, but it is something, and lesser topics have been posted on these boards over the years.

Besides, I wouldn't expect anything like that from either KCBS or KGO. I don't work for either but, one of the reasons I have such high regard for both stations is that they are class acts, big money makers, and among the most-respected AMs in the nation.

I don't have a sarcastic bone in my body. Okay, maybe the one in my middle finger.

Curious "war," since the soldiers for each "army" work side by side in the same room, aggregating, sharing and coordinating the exact same information from the exact same people and sources. The same "reporters" even frequently work alternating shifts on the two stations.

Image is everything, no?

David - your well developed middle finger must be the size of Sissy Hankshaw's thumbs!

(semi-obscure literary reference designed to make me look way more learned than I really am)

Llew, Uma. Uma, Llew.

I think Southbay wise KLIV covers traffic more often than it's Northbay's cousins and KLIV's listeners are invited to call in with traffic alerts and who would know best then the driver's on the road. KLIV even give's "time reported" as to when the incident happend so you'll know how "fresh" the report is.

I only wished that KLIV covered the entire bay but KLIV's coverage area dosen't go up that far north but my hats off to KLIV for a great job in local traffic reporting.

Tony.

I certainly agree, KLIV has traffic 8 times an hour. I think Empire should look into buying KBKF 87.7, a channel 6 LPTV that is running K-Love now. It boomed when I was in Oakland listening
