A "Hi-FIVE" to SMALL MARKET AM RADIO

Times are really tough -we all know the "drill"... I just want to "pat the back" of a LOCAL AM station that is presenting an AWESOME format in an economically-embattled community here in the Hoosier state. Being on the AM band is a detriment to start, but the current economy adds to that concern... WIFE in depressed Connersville is doing one of the best jobs I have ever witnessed! Ted has the station sounding GREAT... Bob-on-the-job [here] is the culprit responsible for THE BEST audio on an AM station that passed the front-end of a tuner I have owned! I got back in my home-town last night, and listened to their 5-watt presentation at 5-miles away... IT WORKED, AND SOUNDED GREAT... I continue to wish this locally-oriented station THE BEST!

Bob, WHY hasen't Dave applied for an FM "translator" [100.1 is avalable in Connersville - free 'n clear at MAXIMUM POWER]... WSVX in Shelbyville got the same under much less distress... Dave has the money, he should "step up"!

Bob-on-the-job.....If I do buy an AM I am looking at, I'd hire you for a day to come and play with the 'chain'...It's got an Orban 9200 AM a Marti with less than a mile of studio to site and needs very little to make it shine.. God, I would love to sound like that AM...Oh, the transmitter is a BE-500a with an old tubed McMartin sitting next to it (not operating), SINE systems remote... I'll let you know, if it happens! "Skipper T." still looking for that 'sleeper' AM... Maybe Bob-on-the-job can tell me how to get one of those FM1's for AM stations.. Nobody I work with in filing seems to know how to do it or what forms to fill out! I know Hopkinsville, KY has two and Owensboro, KY has one.... And one more thing.... Where do get listings for used AM transmitters??? I only found ONE company on the internet and Radio-World seems to have changed their format and I can't find the classifieds like I used to (online)........

"Skip" down in Oakland City/Evansville

If I understand the protocol, there has to be an open window to drop in a new translator. I can't speak for Dave, but I do know the topic comes up from time to time. WSVX's was already assigned to Shelbyville & operating. It was just a matter of the buyer & seller coming to terms. And yes, there are a couple of operating translators in Connersville. But that gets into the ownership arena & that's way above my pay grade, so I just stand prepared to execute it if it comes my way.

The FCC is not eager to open a new translator filing window after the
flood of applications received last time. The FCC has vowed to open
an LPFM window before it opens another translator filing window.

But, an FM frequency would be very helpful for WIFE in Connersville.

They could move 94.3 several miles closer. But, this would require a
new tower, land, and an expensive directional antenna. Although this
move looks good on paper. I know about that steep 8th Street Hill in
Connersville. That might not work out so well and justify the expense
of the tower move.

The only way to get a decent FM signal any time in the near future is
to buy a translator from WJCF. Then, file for an STA to relay WIFE.

This is what WSVX in Shelbyville did. I think it was a very wise move
for them.

Best of Luck guys!

I'm certain Dave Rodgers is investigating those and other possibilities. He's not a guy who will "stand on a soft 17." If there's ever a way to improve his position, Rodgers will find it and capitalize.

I gotta give another "Hi-FIVE" to WZZB in Seymour. The air chain is also maintained by Bob-On-The-Job and it is one of the few AM stations anywhere still broadcasting in AM Stereo and still playing music
(satellite-delivered gold-based AC).
I have a late-80's model Delco radio I removed from a junk-yard-Caddy a few years ago and put it in my Jimmy. WZZB is the only AM stereo station I can receive, but boy do they sound good. In fact they sound better than a few FM's around here.
Unfortunately 1KW on 1390KHz does not lend itself to great coverage, but if you are in Seymour with a good AM stereo, they sound way better than any AM broadcasting in HD (which really isn't saying much).
