A Holiday Message 2U

As I usually do this time of year, I head down state for the holidays. So, I thought I would take this opportunity to wish you all well - good health and good fortune. It has been an interesting year for radio not only Jax but North Florida radio in general.

I usually like to acknowledge those who do a great job toward the year-end. This year I’m skipping that. There are a lot of worthy folks but it seems over the last few years, those who I personally like the most get the axe by the new year. So, fogetaboutit as they say where I used to live.

Instead, I’ll take this time to admit to my own shortcomings. When I first discovered this website, I didn’t even know what posters meant when they said “stick,” “flip,” “imagining,” spot sets” and I’m sure many more terms. To this day, I really have no idea how radio works. I’ve read some stuff on it but that part of radio never interested me much. There was lots of talk about translators this year and so I read about it. I’m still not prepared to take a test on the subject but at least there is an avenue to help some stations be more competitive and that’s a good thing.

I’m also pretty naïve. I wanted to admit this for some time so I might as well here. I can’t even remember the signal anymore but when the former Rooster frequency was up for sale, I had this wacky idea that WMXJ in Miami should simulcast here so as to bring actual people on the air and a lot of music we were no longer hearing. Someone had posted that CC was only interested in seeing that signal be out of market to reduce competition. I heard from WMXJ ownership and management. They were polite but they weren’t interested. Neither was CBS Radio. Looking back, I was pretty dumb in the business ways of radio.

I’m human folks and there’s a helluva lot I don’t know about radio. But it’s fun learning and I’m sure 2011 will teach me even more. If there is any recognition to be made, I’ll make it to fellow posters. You made this board very interesting this year and I’m sure that will continue next year. Time to hit the road – literally. Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas and Happy Festivus!
