A little birthday buzz for Radio Discussions Boards

Hey everyone,

Just tossing out a small idea! Since the Radio Boards have been around for quite a while now maybe it’s time to celebrate in public a little and create some fresh buzz for the boards....

What if the moderators or founders put out a short press release to the big three trade outlets — RAMP, Inside Radio, and Radio Ink — announcing that the Radio Boards are marking this milestone? It could highlight the community’s history, the founders, and all the great industry talks that have happened here over the years.

or maybe ....To make it fun, and enhance industry engagement, maybe we could have announce in the press release some “birthday thread” where everyone posts answers to some big querstion ...like:

“What’s the best thing radio can do to strengthen its future?”

All the responses could live right here, drawing people back to the boards to read, share, and reconnect with the community.

Just a thought — the boards are awesome, but a little re-kickstart like this might get some new energy going and remind folks how valuable this space is.

That would be hard since, I the original founder and now once again owner of this site, own RadioInsight, which is actually the most read daily radio industry news publication by traffic for the past several years. None of my competition is going to promote what I do, since I have built a brand that has eaten away at theirs.

2027 will be the 30th anniversary of when I launched the first radio industry message board on the internet from my college dorm room that would become Radio-Info and later RadioDiscussions. There will definitely be something planned around that.

Unfortunately, one topic doesn't push engagement. What you're suggesting is just a catch-all thread that like nearly many others will devolve into multiple sub-branches and lose the original focus. We have a few things in mind to grow usage in particularly when I am able to move the site off this software and fully integrate it into Radioinsight.com.

The best way to engage is to simply participate and contribute engaging content.

And they will be getting that. Keeping the heart and soul of what the site has always been since I was a naive 17 year old wanting to learn as much about radio as possible in 1997, but also evolving with the times to give additional options.

Besides all the excellent points made by Lance in rebuttal, here's another factor that very few of the "radio fans" here take into account:

Lance already has enough to do.

I know this because there are days when my participation here is minimal, because I also have actual work to do ... in the business. I come and go as I find time, and I post only if I have the time to spare. Some days, there is more time available to me than others (astute observers already have likely noted that I am least likely to appear on Thursdays, which is the day of the week when KRKE takes up most of my time). @TheBigA appears to have a similar situation; a lot of his posts come at odd hours outside of the business day, @fybush will pop in, answer someone's question, and then leave again before anyone notices he was here, and @davideduardo has a very erratic schedule of participation.

But, back to Lance. Unlike some of the "radio news" sites, he doesn't just reprint press releases. Hell, he digs around and finds things out well in advance of the press releases. Does anyone here think that's less than a full-time job in and of itself? (Those raising their hands are cordially invited to remove their rose-colored glasses, because for them, the famous line by Col. Nathan Jessup, as portrayed by Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men would seem to apply.)

And now, I have used up what time I have for this today. I won't be back online for several hours, so feel free to rebut me in my absence. It won't change anything, but it might make you feel better ... although I would rather it made you think.

Good points, @lanceventa. For the record, I've been up here twice over the years and have enjoyed it both times. It helps keep the RF flowing through me. :D)

I know a few people in the radio business, including a cousin and a nephew and they told me that RadioInsight is top notch and their to go daily read for the latest broadcasting stuff.
