I think a more appropriate question is which stations aren't covering this story? All the urban stations are on it, even 95.5 and 100.5 are on it, and Scott Shannon was doing live stuff on True Oldies. That leaves out B98.5, which has big 80's weekends, but is apparently voted number one station for not showing interest to Michael Jackson....They were running the same lame Delilah show, which is recorded three months in advance. Just sad.....
I think a more appropriate question is which stations aren't covering this story? All the urban stations are on it, even 95.5 and 100.5 are on it, and Scott Shannon was doing live stuff on True Oldies. All I know is I tried 99..7 and 94.1 to hear MJ songs about 3 hours after the news to no avail. Disgraceful. Way to step up there, pop MD idiots!

If you are a Classic Hits station and you are NOT doing a tribute or have something up on the website, the PD should be fired. this is the biggest story for the format since George Harrison's passing.

Kelly McCoy did mention his death on B98.5 about 6:45. WSB-AM did have CNN audio for a few minutes about that time...but went to commercial.
From 6:45-7:15. I heard nothing from Star 94 or Q100. V103 discontinued normal programming with Frank Ski and Co. playing his songs and taking calls (WXIA did a news story featuring V103). Majic 107.5/97.5 appeared to do the same. I was away from my car radio after 7:15, so I don't know what happened after that.
I remember in 2005, Star 94 and Q100 did cover the acquital verdict in the Michael Jackson child molestation case live. While they may not have had his songs on the air computer, they still could have talked about it.
97.1 The River does not play Michael Jackson or Jackson 5 songs, so any lack of tribute would not be a surprise. True Oldies does not play Michael's solo material (as it is in the 80's), just the Jackson 5 (the 70's).
Regardless, every morning show (except the country shows) should be talking about it later this morning.

Arum was already slated to fill in. What should he have done? Ignored the story when the news crossed only minutes earlier? The News/Talk station covered THE news of the day and had people talking about it. So tell us all how that is shameless exploitation.Neil Millman said:

Mark Arum did his usual great job with the story. I also noticed Jackson programming on V-103, Kiss 104.1, Majic 107.5/97.5 and WAOK. The one that surprised me was The Bull had Jason Pullman live, filling in for the voicetracked Ty Bentli, and taking calls on the Jackson story.
None of this was the least bit exploitive. On news/talk and urban stations, it was what listeners wanted and expected. It was totally appropriate. It was a huge story.

I think, while understandable, it is also a little... wrong... to criticize a station for not "going all Michael" or doing as much as some people believe is appropriate on the entire situation.
Why? It's both for psychological and business reasons..
1. Not everybody grieves or comes to closure the exact same way another person might, so for one to expect that because they'd handle it a certain way, then everyone else should too, it's not really... well, open minded thinking. Everybody is different. Some may not wish to be hit 24/7 with the same depressing news. It also makes a difference when and what time you receive the news. Your reaction and how you want to deal with it will be different if you are at work (9/11) than it would be if you have the day off at home (Aaliyah / Selena), or are on vacation (like when I found out about Lisa "left eye" Lopez in Cuba). Age can also be a factor on what you wish to hear, and I'd expect a station like Radio Disney not to do a full coverage...
2. If a station is not live, or mostly pre-recorded, then those can be the places where people who do not wish to be constantly saddened or reminded can turn to. Besides, one never knows what really might be going on behind the scenes as music is playing on a station. I could understand some just taking the day off a bit and letting things run completely on auto pilot over the airwaves, or just doing a sprinkle of coverage here and there while trying to keep everything else as "normal day" sounding as possible.
I came to this conclusion and way of thinking mostly from what happened on 9/11, when someone called KissFM KZZP to criticize KPTY The Party for playing music, and the morning show very intelligently said something along the lines of "I understand your frustration about certain stations wanting to be all "we're all party all the time" and all that, but this is not a time to criticize, and you must remember; not everyone can handle or wants to deal with 24/7 coverage of a situation of this matter, and I believe that everyone has the right to handle the situation as they wish, the best they can for themselves. For some people, that might mean getting a little info and once they had enough they just want to sit back and listen to some music....."
I can agree to this to some extent because the last thing I want to do is turn on the radio at night to hear this all night in my sleep, only to wake up and be bambarted with the news as an introduction to the new day. I actually just kept the radio off after 12am, knowing what the morning shows would be like... and listened to Sirius BPM... which.. I still managed to wake up JUST IN TIME to hear something! Anyway, no talk radio, and pretty much no radio in general for me outside of mix show play, since all the songs tend to have a bit of a gloomy feel and sound to them today. Very bad time for me to get into a car and hear "apologize" by One republic on Kiss FM, and even the "I gotta feeling" song by Black Eyed Peas sounds a bit.... well, I don't know how to describe it. The Keri Hilson "knocks you down"... I don't know. A bunch of stuff are just sounding a bit "situational, eerie, and gloomy" today (which some would probably wonder why I'd listen to the type of rhythms that are played on Sirius BPM..). Anyway, I can't just sit here and listen to nonstop Michael Jackson hits at the moment... and it doesn't help when you go to Yes dot com and the picture for all the MJ tracks eerily and brightly stand out. Maybe it's just me. I have my own personal issues, phobias, and thoughts when it comes to death or something I know being dead that I don't want to deal with.. or reminders of how plans and things could drastically change with little or no warning and - THAT'S IT...
Well... as for me personally, I'm fine with getting my news about any situation on Talk Radio or News Channels, or SOME music channels. No Coast to Coast AM with George Noory for me this weekend.

Slightly off radio, I was surprised that ET couldnt find a way to get the news in last night at 7p. I know it's pre-taped and fed but I always thought there was a way to do a live cut-in or something, if the world collaped (and this was the facsimilie of it for entertainment.) They looked really bad.

I'm sorry but Star 94 and Q100 dropped the ball big time in Atlanta. Mediabase backs up what everybody has been saying; they didn't get anything by Michael on until the late evening hours. So yeah, understandable that not everybody deals with news of that magnitude in the same way, but keep one thing in mind: Michael Jackson is directly responsible for a great deal of today's 'pop' sound. I'd venture a guess and say as many as 80% of the artists that are played on stations like Star and Q are heavily influenced in their own work by Michael.
All that being said, I think the main reason that they got nothing on was probably because either they were tracked during that time or nobody had the clearance to pull the trigger on some MJ music.

I didn't expect any shows.. TMZ, Entertainment Tonight, Conan O Brien, Carson Daily...etc to mention it because I knew their programs were taped in advance.. But our news at 5 and 9pm was dedicated, determined, and dependable. Well they don't say that here of course, but I'm sure the people in this section of the boards know what I'm talking about.

I was shocked when I heard 95.5 THE BEAT also playing his music. STAR 94.1 and Q100 wree no where to be found. As of today, all 4 Urban stations are still playing his hits, especially during the mixshows. Not too sure about the Rhythmic and Pop stations.
