A Michael Jackson question?

Re: A Michael Jackson question?

This insiders mentality that any station NOT going apeshit over MJ and playing his music ad nausem is somehow clueless is EXACTLY the reason that everyday listeners have fled radio in droves. The chief complaint has always been that stations all sound alike and all do the same things.

I personally applaud any station that resists the urge to follow all the others like a penguin jumping in the icy sea. There are plenty of people in the real world who appreciate NOT being force-fed whatever story the media decides we must endure. I also thought it was a tad ridiculous for the local TV newcasts to have so much time dedicated to MJ. It was a real stretch for them finding all the "local connections." Who gives a rat's ass what some dude who was one of his security guards for 10 minutes in 1983 thinks about it? It's the lead story. Do it, and move on to the rest of the news. There's plenty of more important things we should be worrying about.

Re: A Michael Jackson question?

...Ok, I'd say with both Q100 and Star*94, at least ONE could have done it, but still I'm not criticizing or complaining. Movin 99.7 KMVQ (Now my favorite station in addition to Miami's WPOW Power 96) Did do MJ's stuff in mix shows. Ironically, the one station I'd expect to do it here (Movin 97.5 KMVA - which does NOT compare at all to 99.7 in San Fransisco), didn't do anything (at least that I know of). They play adult rhythmic pop hits, or songs from back in the day and today.

Check out the Sirius R&B Hits Heart & Soul Channel. They've become the Michael Jackson tribute channel. Now I think this is a smart thing to do. Have one select station that people can go to.

Wow, how's your day?

I believe that the reason for responses being all over the spectrum like this one is because Michael Jackson is a polarizing figure in death, just the same as he was in life. Fact is, Jackson was one of the largest contributors to pop music, dance, music video production, and celebrity philanthropy in the past 30 years. Maybe we can just say that, legal controversies aside, he's getting his fair due on radio right now at the time of his passing--and for anybody who isn't playing him this weekend, so be it.

Re: A Michael Jackson question?

For the record, I'm not anti-MJ by any stretch. I was and still am a fan, and was around in full force in his heyday. But this board is about RADIO, and I think the copycat mentality in covering things like this is serious overkill, and chases away more listeners than it brings in and holds. I think the same would be true for this reaction to ANY artist - whether or not there was controversy attached.

Radio might have a "copycat" mentality, but I don't think concentrating on one of the biggest stories of the decade falls into that category. When big news happens, people want to hear about it. And with this story, we had a mix of big news, pop culture and entertainment, making it more in demand from the listener's point-of-view.

Re: A Michael Jackson question?

I just saw a cartoon..

It was of satan and Jesus.

Satan was holding a book entitled: Michael R.I.P.

SATAN SAYS TO JESUS, WANT TO FLIP A COIN?

PRETTY MUCH SUMS UP JACKSON'S LIFE

Which station is going to shamelessly exploit the death MJ death the most?
WSB-AM had Mark Arum doing a call-in show in place of Herman Cain.
Arum was already slated to fill in. What should he have done? Ignored the story when the news crossed only minutes earlier? The News/Talk station covered THE news of the day and had people talking about it. So tell us all how that is shameless exploitation.

I agree, KnowsNews2, they did what they should have as a news/talk station, and didn't go on and on for three days with nothing different...in which, that would have been shameless.

I'm sorry but...Q100 dropped the ball big time in Atlanta. Mediabase backs up what everybody has been saying; they didn't get anything by Michael on until the late evening hours.

If it had been Rob Thomas, Q100 would still be doing wall-to-wall coverage.

Gosh... how true. The station might go under as it would have nothing to play if Mr. Thomas perished. Oh wait, it still has 1997's "Never Ever".

It is pretty shocking that neither Q nor Star picked up coverage on his death or dedicated music blocks to him. I was on the west coast when all of the MJ news went down and was interested in hearing how Atlanta covered this story. Pretty much all of the Top 40s there went wall-to-wall MJ music for three hours and then added MJ songs every hour throughout the weekend. It was good coverage without going overboard (like the networks did with Diana back in '97).

I guess what is disarming is that the African American stations showed him more respect in his death that the Top 40s who actually capitulated him to superstardom. If my memory serves me right, it was the mainstream Top 40s that really showed him love and gave him massive spins in the 80s and 90s - the Z-93s, Power 99s and even 94Q..... not the R&B stations.

Remember when Kurt Cobain offed himself...... 99x played his suicidal rants for hours on end. Shame on both Q100 and Star94 for missing a golden opportunity to highlight someone who brought Top 40 back from the edge in the early 80s.

Star 94 actually did a Michael Jackson weekend. Once an hour, they played a comment about Jackson by someone in the entertainment business followed by a Michael Jackson song.

As far as Q100, the morning after MJ's death, the Bert Show was basically dedicated to the Jackson story. They played montages of Jackson's music and discussed his life and death.

Re: A Michael Jackson question?

WSB played thriller instead of the news at the top of the hour.
