A musical icon passes on, it's Saturday night and.......

probably every Central PA radio station that could play Whitney Houston was asleep at the wheel. Nobody live in the building.

Radio used to own the "timeliness" position. Not any more.

Did a single station play a Whitney Houston song last night that wasn't planned?

Did any talent who may have been voicetracked on a Whitney appropriate station go into their station last night

and drop at least a few Whitney songs in and re-record some tracks? Did any of the PDs care enough to get this done?

W/O listening, I will bet WSOX with their syndicated Mike Harvey Show probably had some of her tunes played since the show is live. But the SOX PD shouldn't pat himself on the back for this. Wasn't his doing.

And the Rose probably had this covered as well if they are still live on Saturday night.

Anyone else? Doubtful.

Sorry Cumulus and Clear Channel===like it or not people die on the weekends. And this one was an icon.

I don't know about anyone else, but When I heard the news last night, I checked the recently played list through http://tunein.com for both Wink stations. Wink 103 did a half hour around 10:30-11PM during their Retro night. 104 had nothing, and didn't even play anything all throughout the overnight either, as I listen to them while doing my paper route. I thought it was a bit odd though since 103 usually has the same playlist as 104. Yet, for some strange reason, someone was there last night and through some songs on.

Everybody is always ready to trash Bobby D., but this time I think he took matters into his own hands...even if this was done from a laptop at home. There are just some things that ya gotta do. Kudos to WINK 103.

If this is the case, then congratulations. Sounds like O'Dea was asleep at the wheel this time.

To tell the truth, radio cume on the weekend is so low, except for Saturday 10a-3pm, it didn't matter as much you might think that those stations weren't able to react. Don't get we wrong......it would've been nice, but the real opportunity lies tomorrow as the morning shows hit the air.

What's interesting is how little Whitney's music gets played anymore. CHR and Hot AC abandoned her at least 15 years ago. Mainstream AC dropped most of her titles when they jettisoned ballads. Even as the 80s formats and features got hot, Whitney didn't get her fair share of airplay when you consider all the hits she had in that era. An 80s icon, most of her hits were from 1985-90, before Soundscan tracked real sales and BDS measured actual airplay, so there's no telling how big they really were. However, "I Will Always Love You" was one of the BDS era's first big hits, staying # 1 for 14 weeks. Even that song gets limited play now. I wonder if her image had anything to so with it? Dying turned out to be a pretty good career move for Michael Jackson, whose music now gets a lot more exposure than before his death.

Understand your point about the low cume. Yeah, Michael was pretty much poison because of the child molestation issue before he died. Once he passed on, his music came back in vogue. Just wonder if it ever was out of vogue with the listeners.

Whitney of course problems are mainly self induced. I really blame Bobby Brown for what happened to her. But 7 consecutive #1 hits shouldn't be ignored and then the iconic song from The Bodyguard. It'll be curious to see if her music comes back now.
I guess you'd find it on stations like WDAS-FM in Philly.
