I'm no fan of KTRH. I've been upset with them several times such as when the northwest side of Houston was under water and KTRH was telling listeners to go to their website for road closures. The Hurricane Rita coverage was eclipsed by KLBJ in Austin that had real information on the air. The list goes on.
This is the sort of statement I expect from KTRH. It is crafted well. It should help assure the KTRH staff. It recalls KTRH's glory days as it should. Let's get real. Is he supposed to tell everyone his station is crap? Certainly not.
News 92 FM has a mountain to climb and it is daunting. There is a high expectation of the posters here that must be tackled before the criticism weighs in. KTRH is still the P1 EAS station in town, an edge that, at least among authorities, implies the station is the leading information station in this city. KTRH has a heritage as the news authority and although it is an image that has been badly tarnished, it is habitually the station people think of for news and information when they need it now. Habits must be broken.
Our new News station has entered a big fight against an aging heavyweight fighter. I haave no doubt the fight will be a good one, going many rounds before a winner is declared. I will not speculate the outcome but I will say this: I think people behind the walls of KTRH are worried and I think the feeling of the folks behind the News 92 FM walls is one of near euphoria as the talent and plans gel to create the winning attitude to take on the heritage challenger. I've been in such stations and there's a magic in the air inside such places.
As all of this plays out, let us hope it is the listeners that win the battle as both stations are required to be at the top of their game.
I'm excited and I pick the underdog in this fight but I truly hope the real winner is neither station, but the listener.
