A New Beginning

John Mack Flanagan , If it was an election, To get you back on the air, I would vote for you, and Im sure thousands of other fans of yours would too!!!! Youve got the name, and the voice for sure!! Turning on the radio ,and hearing you,on the same channel as Bobby Ocean, wouldbe what Radio is ,and always wil be FUN! To hear you back on the air playing "Get Ready" by Rare Earth, and "How Long/" by Ace,and the way you do a radio program is "Out of Sight"!! The 70 s and you on The Big 610, were days that really made me want to listen, listen longer, you always had something great going on the radio!1 You did more for Radio than you know! In 1974 i was working at Concord TV Cable as an Installer,As I would be so Lucky to have a company truck with a radio , in 1974, I would have the volume way up, so as I climbed the Telephone pole to do my Pole Connect, i could hear you! The memories are still there,Theres alot of times I would wonder will John Mack Flanagan ever be o again? When Bobby Ocean went to XM, I thought, Wow JMF should be on there too! If you dont Im going to Request to XM , that You should be on there too! Theres no reason to not Hire 70 s talent and JMF , could really boost sagging ratings, They ought to see you are needed on their station! It would sound like the 70s again, they have the music ,They have Bobby, Now get John! Thats my Story and Im stickin to it!! Kenny inn Concord, Im e-mailng XM now!!

Hello Semoochie and Kenny in Concord (gee, I feel like I'm back in the world of CB radio! "Got a copy good buddy?!?") Yes, if I'm not wrong (and I thought Rick Chases' real name was George Fryer!) Anyway, the last I heard, Scott Forrest married a former Miss Oregon (p.s. I'm married to a runner-up for Jr. Miss, Roswell New Mexico 1962...My Beauty Queen!) Anyway, Scott's up there in the Northwest but didn't know he was still in radio! That guy wore some bitichin' size 32 leather pants when we worked together. By the way, if I did do satellite radio, if I did...is there a way to answer the phones live? Phones have always been my thing...how would I stay fresh? ("Mustang Sally" again?) Wolfman Jack told me they didn't want him at WCBS FM!!! (part time!!!) because his act had gotten old. I'd never want to do that. I'd want to be FRESH, Hip, and Happenin'. -John- (Thanks again for all your support. Those that turn on the radio have always been so good to me.)

One last post today while I think of it: Odd & Even. I mentioned my memiors "Superhit Highway" (plug..plug..) and bundling air checks on cd with the book, I have a file cabinet full of "Odd & Even" skimmer cassettes (telescoped only voice keyed with the mic, for those unfamiliar with the terms...) every tape has something. With the disappearance of KFRC, believe it or not, I pulled out some and listened to one, several weeks ago. Every tape has something; contest, guest, phone bit, or something. I would record everyday, odd number day-Odd side, Even number day (like today 11/6) Even side. When something happened I'd toss the tape aside and get a new tape. At KWSS I just taped everyday and saved the aircheck. I bought hundreds of cassettes wholesale (300 at a time. That's almost a year!) By the way, does anyone remember KWSS? Have you heard it? Mike Preston created quite a station! We were Bobby Poe nominated for station of the year, Mike for pd, and Barry Beck, afternoon guy for jock of the year. (I did middays for 3 1/2 years. I remember someone saying, "Why do they keep you middays?" Most stations didn't have mid day jocks. I was grateful for the work.) -John-

Scott Forrest was at KISN-FM for years and I recently heard him filling in now that the station has moved back to its legendary dial position(91derful).

Guy Zapolean - Did I see his name connected with KFRC's 'Movin'? Guy goes back to KWSS. He programmed in Phoenix (I think??) and came into KWSS because I met him. I remember he said, "You have more competition than we have in Phoenix and your numbers are higher!" Can you believe I have framed numbers from Inside Radio that show KWSS #1 in San Jose and beating KGO! Wow! Am I proud of that place! For 1,000 watts, we did o.k.

P.S. I've been asked to do an 'Old Time California Barn Dance Show' and I think I'll do it. We're trying to get it on KPIG in Freedom in the middle of the night Saturday/Sunday morning. It would be old time country presented as a live format. Something that may NOT be done anywhere. Louvin Brothers, Hank Snow, gonna be a big one! Get your boots and bolo out! (Mike Preston! and Guy Z. Ha-Ha)
-John-

Jack Friday, now there's a buddy. In my opinion one of the great jocks left breathing. We worked together right at the end of my former profession. Jack was on KFRC, I was on Y93. My Jack Friday story? I'm on the air at 93.3 and Kim Schaffer my last best friend in radio walks in the studio and she looks like she just got hit by a truck. "Oh my God!" she said, "I just dropped Jack Friday's PDA, and it's in a million pieces!" I rushed down the hallway three doors and Jack also looked in shock. "6 years of names and addresses gone." ... he said. I didn't know what to say! But my high-tech PDA is a piece of paper! I dare you to drop and break that!
-John-

Last night I was invited to do a two minute commentary on a San Francisco public access TV show. Wanna see me in color? (yikes!) Stay tuned. I can do anything, so help me with some topics, will you? I think I might do an Andy Rooney type bit without the whinning (hee hee). "Why do people like coffee?" (2 minutes) "Why do I like the Rain?" You get the idea. This could be fun! I stand in front of a potted fern at work (in my uniform) and just let it fly. The bit is hacked and inserted into a half hour variety show. This could be fun! Let me know what you think. -John-

Hi John Mack,

It's funny...I've read these boards for years and never posted and now I've done 3 of 'em in a few days.
I've got to tell you, I enjoy your writing and excellent storytelling. I forgot you had that great ability to weave a tale.
My memory of our conversations throughout the years, both in and outside the boundaries of the "physical" radio stations has been revived. No one more than I, enjoy a thought well presented.
Thank you for yours.
What, I think is most important in life and within our business especially, is kindness and humility as well as recognition of a job well done.
Remember the achievements of the past (briefly) and focus on the success and development of the future with passion. Lest all will be lost.
Hey...this is radio...it's not dead...yet. There may be those who can breathe life into it's veins as well as develop exciting delivery systems in the future that will bring the same spark of enthusiasm we all share about what "was" hidden and then discovered by all within the kilocycles and megacycles of radio's past.
You (John) make me want to get in front of the keyboard and write for hours on end. I know how you enjoy it too.
So as I look out the big window before me across the forest filled with leafless trees just waiting for the first snowfall, I only wish there was a single station to turn on that would appropriately accompany this moment. But what would it sound like? What would it say to me? Who would be my new friend on the air?
Those are important questions to be considered and great goals to be set by programmers, consultants and anyone who cares.
Achieve those goals and...I'm willing to bet...the money will follow for everyone involved.
I say this remembering that radio "is" a business and it is performed to make money, lot's of it. Success then, will be well deserved!
Let's open that bottle of Veuve Reserve and celebrate!

Jack

What would it say to you? What would it say to me? What would it say to JMF? What would it say to anyone? Ladies and Gentleman! "The Beat Gos On!" The only problem is there are to many drummers and too many listeners all wanting to hear a different beat! And we're all out of sync with each other! The first song that came to my mind: "The Love I Lost" Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. "I'm sorry to say, you go your way and I'll go my way!" Isn't that what all the Mega owners are saying to us all? The vampire has feasted and were all dead and the vampire now must seek new blood to survive another day! And the pretty maidens await the vampires bite with all the young blood he seeks!

Did I really say all that? LOL lol lol lol........

OUCH!!!! I have never felt compelled to post on this board but someone at work told me I showed up in your post AGAIN today!! I cracked up when I read this. Thanks a lot Johnny Boy....something I have tried to forget for the past...what 7 or 8 years, you publically bring up. I felt so bad that day. Jack always had the coolest gadgets (He still does) and I loved to play with all of them (cameras, PDA's, Phone's, Laptops, Radios etc). Oh, and I don't think the Palm Pilot was in a million pieces. I think it looked fine, it just wouldnt turn on anymore. Jack, did you ever get that thing working again?? Call me when you come back into town. I think the 3 of us need to meet for lunch.

8 years later and I have dropped my own PDA Palm phone so many times I am on my 3rd phone in year an a half (could the quality of these things be any poorer?? HA!!) . Nothing changes!! Thank God for insurance.

By the way, a belated Happy Birthday. I am sure you got my e-mail I sent to you. I have GOT to run into you soon. ;)

Good God! Jack Friday responds again. It was sooo deep, I thought the "Cosmic" Bobby Ocean had joined us. "Oosh" is deep, but Jack is too! We'll all (me, you, Jack, Oosh & Kim...) have to join hands and go "Oooommmm..." Gee, I'm feeling that moment all alone. Maybe I'd better stop holding my hand! (hee hee) What's happened to me? Well, for my birthday last Wednesday, David Jackson gave me several CDs of Wolfman Jack ("Have Mercy!"). When "Wolf" plays, "I Just Can't Stop Dancin' " by Archie Bell and the Drells, I started howlin' and kissin' myself. (That's very difficult to do!) Anyway, Wolf is alive and these CDs are poping, fading, buzzing, clicking, phasing, .... well, you get the idea. It's 50,000 watt border-blasting XERB in Rosarita Beach, Mexico! Oh Baby! I layed my hand on my ipod, and I was healed of 'radio-itis". The sound is still out there baby! It's still out there!

The trick is to set your alarm for 2 o'clock in the morning and have the CD player cued up to play those old fadey and phased Wolfman XERB recordings while you're still laying in bed in the dark.

It's the nearest thing to being teleported back to 1967 short of an acid flashback...

He was a wonderful guy, and had as much pure talent as anyone I've ever been around. (I know of his personal devils.) He seemed to find the time to talk to young talent and fans in a very approachable way.

Used to say in a promo, "often imitated, but never duplicated, Wooolfman Jack!"

The Cosmic Bobby Ocean - Is there a better person on the planet than Bobby Ocean? If you don't know him you're missing something. Everyday I miss working with him.

Once I heard him talk up the intro to "Stairway to Heaven"! Almost 2 minutes? Oosh...somethin' else.

Most people would think of Bobby Ocean and associate him with the San Francisco Bay Area. Since I'm always a little different, and Oosh has worked S.F. and L.A., I connect Bobby Ocean with San Diego. Bobby is one of the only people to work KGB and go across the street to KCBQ. He'll always be San Diego to me.

When I went to the Billboard Radio Forum (Billboard Magazine) 1973, I crowded into a room with several hundred others to hear Buzz Bennett, Bill Drake, Paul Drew, Rick Scaklar and others express their ideas. When the presentation started a voice came on, intense, thoughtful, expressive, not like any voice I'd ever heard before: "What we're going to do, is what you ask your listeners to do everyday: Listen" ... It was Ocean. Wow! I never dreamed in a few months we would be working together. We worked together in some of the most magical of radio days. Oosh, there's only one. -John-

It's so easy to remember walking into KRUX in Phoenix for the first time, or KELP in El Paso the first time, and getting the shot of goosebumps. Every station was playing the same music, but there was an energy, a power that came from the microphones and the voices of the PEOPLE reaching out thru the airwaves, and I liked the buzz. I liked that feeling of energy and excitment. Today, there's too much out there to capture that sizzle. God, you could feel it at KFRC. Once I gave a tour to two guys who'd hitchhiked in from Salt Lake City, to see KFRC. I walked em' around, one guy put on Dr. Don's headphones, and when we walked back on the street he said to his companion, "We've seen KFRC. "I've worn Dr. Don's headphones. I'll remember this day forever." You know what? I think I'll remember it too.

John, while were talking about days gone by, I have your show on cassette when you had "The Wolfman on your show on KYA 93.3 ,I believe The year ws 1991 ,and yes I still listen to it! I have over 100 tapes of your good friend Chris Edwards @ KIOI fm , and his Time Machine he did every sunday nite back in 1980 and 81!! I have the "REAL" Chris Edwards on tape, not the "IMPOSTER"on KYAradio1.com!!! Old radio is so fun to listen to, its like time has stopped for a while!! As far as Boby Ocean, You and him would be GREAT on XM ,I wrote to XM, and let them know they need more DJs John Zeller replied to my e mail and acknowledged my request!! I told him you and Bobby Ocean , could really bring in ratings Legends = ratings!! It would be really nostalgic to hear you on XM right before Bobby Ocean, and hear you say "Ocean @ Noon" !!! I heard that many times in 1974!! Kenny in Concord
