Kenny in Concord Started with KYA in 1962 and Gene Nelson

RE: John's remarks above associating Bobby Ocean with San Diego - that's was my original association with Ocean, as well. Summer 1970 for me was the summer between my first and second years of college. After being away at school for 9 months on my own, being at home with my parents in LA was very tense So I fled to San Diego and slept on the dorm room floor of a friend who was attending UCSD. I spent my days surfing and swimming in the Pacific Ocean, and listening to the OTHER Ocean on KGB, not to mention Lee Baby Simms on KCBQ. A great summer, and great radio.

It's funny about perceptions.

Osh did four years in San Diego, two and a half in San Francisco and seven in Los Angeles before heading back to the Bay Area. I never heard him live on KFRC the first time, yet I always considered him a San Francisco jock....probably because I never heard his San Diego work until a few years ago and he always seemed (on airchecks) to be having more fun at KFRC than he did on KHJ.

---Michael Hagerty

Also if you hear his audition tape for v/o work, it is heavily bent on his work at KFRC. I always perceive him as a Bay Area personality.

Do you have any Ron Parker Tapes? ;)

I did it last night!

It's taken 6 years of looking for some media "thing" to do, but I finally found it, and did the first last night. You know I work in an office tower in San Francisco's financial district (3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday thru Tuesday...) white shirt, navy suit, designer tie...I see hundreds and hundreds of people everyday. Mostly lawyers and accountants (whoopee!) and one: Vicki Wooden had an interesting idea; she has a public access San Francisco TV show she's done for years called, "The Isabella Show". It's a low budget variety show. She's read my postings here and we've been good friends so she said to me, "How would you like to do two minutes on anything? On the Isabella Show?" She said, "You could stand here all shift and come up with ideas".. My first thought for some (?) reason was Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes. That's simple and low tech, we could shoot it at work on meal or break. Last night I did three on break, and it took about 8 minutes!
1.) "Rain" why do some people hate it or love it? 2.) Salute of people who don't own a car. 3.) Grandkids (since I've got a new one.) ... The show airs twice a month (everyother week...) and Vicki will post them on youtube to watch anytime. It's called, "Brainstorm" 'Turning on the Mind'. People can reach me with Brainstorm ideas at: [email protected] Hope you get to check it out. -John-

Thats hilarious Laffer, No tapes of him!! BossDJ has expressed interest in my tapes and the one With John Mack Flanagan is a classic, Ron and Cammy only wish they could do radio like alot of the "Bay Area Legends in Radio" If you took a poll to ask the Bay Area who is your favorite DJ from the past, Im sure JMF would beat out C and D nd Bobby Ocean would get alot of votes! Chris Edwards and Tall Tom Campbell KYA Legends!! John I pay for XM radio , i would pay for radio here to have "Radio Like It Was" All I care about is classic cars and Radio, my hobbies, I would like to "Turn Back The Hands of Time" go back to 1974 , summertime, be in my 1964 Chevy Impala Super Sport, and have KFRC on, and John Mack Flanagan playing "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Suede Ooga Ooga Ooga Shaka Ooga, Gas was cheap, traffic was light, and the music was Great!! The 70 s are gone, and that 1964 Impala Super Sport is gone, but the memories Linger on!! Kenny in Concord, The Impala was Maroon with black interior, 327 automatic, Cragar SS wheels, and a Stock AM Radio , and some loud glasspacks, Chevys and Oldies go together!!

Laffer I forgot to tell you the tape Im talking about is the one with "Wolfman Jack" on John Macks show in 1991, Ron Parker never would have Wolfman on his Show, Ron really thought he was "The Ultimate" I disagree, Kenny in Concord

When Wolfman walked into the studio of KSFO/KYA (it was a simulcast) it was like lightning hit. Wolfman Jack was the 1st disc jockey I remember hearing, on XERF in Delll Reeeooo, Texas! Wolf was kind, and warm, and everything you expected, and he knew his radio. The first thing he asked for was a thick phone book. Don't give me a thin one he said, the thicker the better. Someone handed him an Oakland phone book, and during the music, he would key his mic (we had remote mic keys) and pound the book with his fist, in beat to the music. It sounded like Phil Spector's wall-of-sound, "whump!, Whump!" in beat to the music. Just another Wolfman Jack trick in his bag of tricks.

If you remind me, I'll tell my KSFO/KYA tale of returning from Vietnam, applying in person at both, getting turned down and then telling the tale 30 years later on both! Whew! Life is strange. .... -John-

I'd been back from Vietnam about 12 hours, still in uniform when my wife and I were crawling up Taylor Street holding onto telephone poles and I looked over one block and dang! There were cable cars! We could have taken the easy way ... I looked up and saw this building with a circle drive, and KYA call letters up on the building. "Hey!" I said, "I heard them yesterday at Oakland Army Base". (Chris Edwards afternoon drive...) "I'll apply for a job!" This woman came up to me with a big smaile and said "Do you realize you're in the 4th largest market in America? You can't just walk in here off the street!" I said, "Hey! People die, stuff happens, need anyone right now, here I am!" My wife and I left. We walked up some steps to the Mark Hopkins Hotel and I looked down California Street and there were the KSFO call letters. "Hey!" I said, "A guy I was in Nam with was from San Mateo. He told me all about Don Sherwood". "I'll apply for a job!" Well, the woman could not have been nicer. "The PD likes to spend time with guys from Vietnam, I'll get you right in". I told her it was way out of my league. Chandlier, gold carpeting, owned by Gene Autry, God, I was way out of my league. My wife and I left. I told this story 24 years later on BOTH stations! KSFO/KYA-FM ( we were a simulcast...) I never thought of working San Francisco, it was always Detroit, or Chicage for me.But, as I've said a million times, 'there's a difference between dreams and reality'. San Francisco has been so good to me. Even now, all these years later (33) there's no other place I could call "Home". I was so poor and uneducated, and unconnected, I think it was a real miracle the "City By The Bay" opened its arms to me. -John-

John, very well put! Thats exactly why "There has to be Something breaking in This bay Area Soon!"Radio and John Mack Flanagan go together!! Your total commitment to radio, its listeners, and the way you "Deliver The John Mack Flanagan Show , far exceeds some of this other so called "Talent"!!Any one familiar with you and radio would know this "Bay Area Needs Some Nostalgia" not the same old Duos , Ive really been waiting for the day to "Hear the Legends of Bay Area Radio" I wish Bobby Ocean would buy a radio station here, and hire all the DJs Ive put in my posts!! Not to forget Vicki Liviakis, she would sound great on radio, I cant believe with Leslie Griffith gone from KTVU that Tim McVay doesnt try to hire her, KRON is a sinking ship, Kenny in Concord, A big fan of these Legends JMF , Lee Baby Sims, Mucho Morales, Candi Chamberlin, Chris Edwards of course (THE REAL ONE) not you , the phony one @ KYAradio1.com!!!

Guess who contacted me at [email protected]? Steve Taylor. Originally "Citizen Bill Carpenter" at KFRC, Steve was hired with Dr. Don and me in the fall of 1973. Steve and I worked together 12 years later at KWSS. (what a station! KWSS is still my favorite!) Steve is a great guy, He was with KYA in the late 70's and was the voice of KGO in the 80's. Terrific guy! One Halloween at KWSS he dressed in drag and was of the best looking women I've ever seen! HA HA What a great guy, and a tremendous talent! I miss people like that. -John-

Well, when I start hearing from friends in Arizona (!) (I spent 1967-73 living in that state ... ) and friends in Lodi (love that Big Valley) and they say they're following this thing, it's time to fire up the old computer again.

Wanna see me? (close your eyes!) go to: YouTube.com, enter: jackkarma and look for me. The first "Brainstorm" Turning On The Mind, has been completed. More to follow. Sunday night (God willing) I'll do more.

Radio: Plans have been formalized for "Western Standard Time" a barn dance style radio show featuring the Greatest Country Hits of All Time! I should knock out Edition #1 this weekend (I'm off Wednesday/Thursday). Station(S) are interested and we hope to build a radio network ...

Now, a radio tale: Hank Harrall the guy who gave me my first job in radio, in New Mexico, was a singing cowboy on the air in Amarillo, Texas in 1929 when he was 14. Ol' Double H kept a guitar in the control room, and would pick it up and play every once in a while. His voice was smooth as honey and he sounded like Jim Reeves. Hank was a real influence on me. Although I never picked up the guitar (but I could have, I been singing all my life...), I always carried a piece of Hank in my heart. I stopped and saw his widow Shana in 1992. She gave me one of Hank's 45s (yes he owned his own record label!) God willing I'll play it on Western Standard Time. Every edition of WST I plan to salute a music legend. Hank was that. Quite famous in West Texas and eastern New Mexico. I'm VERY excited to share his work, Podner. -John-

Holy Crap! How great is that!! To hear your voice (and see you to boot) That youtube shot was great.

It is funny. When I read John Mack Flanagan's post, I actually can hear it in his voice. Just like the movies and TV does when they show someone reading a letter and you hear the author's voice!

Great Job JMF and hope to see more!

The Way It Was ...

My co-workers now, have never heard of me, heard radio, or know anything of the business I was part of from age 17 - 53, but they like my stories and the way I tell them, so every so often they'll say, "Tell us what it was like back in the old days Grandpa!" HA HA And I'll start another adventure for them. Lately I've spent a lot of time discussing my favorite people: It's the folks from the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, in Tucson. When I was on the air in Tucson from the end of 1968 til the end of 1972, my best friends were at the school for the deaf and blind. They'd call, "John, are you o.k.?" when I was having a bad day. They could hear your soul. And when someone would visit, they would hold your hand, and feel the very depth inside you. When I left Tucson to program KRUX in Phoenix, they came to visit me. Then when I came from Phoenix to San Francisco they came to visit me. Always to hold my hand, and feel what was really happening inside me. The deaf would put the radio on the floor and listen bare-foot to pick up the vibrations. That's what I miss about radio. The people. The co-workers and the deaf and blind, and broken hearted. The people. I never gave a hank about the money or fame (what fame?) it was the people. Sure the equipment and gear was fun, and I RESPECTED engineers, but it was the people. God, I miss them. My co-workers never understand a word I'm saying. They just like the noise. -John-

Things are starting to happen ... I'm posting here ... David Jackson and I are working on our Classic Country Radio Show: Western Standard Time (the initial entry is in the can) ... YouTube.com enter: john flanagan, should bring up the latest work ... and David and I are discussing "Superhit Highway" A Disc Jockey Memoir 1964-2000. (It's coming ...) Lots of stuff in the pipeline. It's amazing what this site has done for me. Got me in touch with people, ideas, resources, who knows where it will lead? Well, thank you! for your support. -John-

JMF says, "Thank you for your support!"

I say, "This goes both ways.... THANK YOU John!!!! I sure hope the feelings are mutual
