A NEW FORMAT FOR A TRAID FM?

I heard a rumor today from a very good source that a Triad Station will soon drop it's long time format. No word yet on which station or what format but this could get interesting.

funny how the Triad kinda stayed out of the spotlight when it can to change....but, there was the time when 'KZL let go all the good 'ol guys and gals..and then things started getting interesting :-\

ps. IMHO, I highly doubt it's 107-5, since they're the only top40 in the market. but hey, who even thought KISS would come to pass and it can't be 104.1

so, here are my picks:

92.3
93.1
can't leave out 98.7, that would not surprise me.
99.5

but could it be an AM ?

It is a $50 million market.

How is WMQX doing? Last I heard they were doing well, but oldies outlets around the country are flipping for younger demos. If they do flip, it would be interesting to see who tries oldies? 98.3 WIST was in a good position to flip to oldies before the Classic Country flip. It would be interesting to see WTOB and WWBG flip to oldies and bring back WTOB's old PAMS jingles to the airwaves. I've got a copy of some of them. Not an aircheck, but the jingles on their own. I don't know what the collector's market is for "Triad" radio. ;D

Is AC the next format to go? There are rumblings about CC flipping ACs across the country.

My first guess would be 98.7. I don't think it would surprise anyone. They haven't been able to hold on to a single format for years.

I want to say WMAG or Oldies, but both seem to still be doing OK and have some life left. The Buzzard though, is a different story...a flip there wouldn't shock me a bit.

WMAG??? HA, wow that would be nuts. That would piss off the majority of the old white folks in the area! If CC flips that to somthing like Top 40 and not 105.7....I would call that the idiot move of the year. I really doubt that

Entercom recently brought Pat Garrett on-board Oldies 93 for programming duties. And so I doubt (but with radio one never really knows) that 93.1 would become movin' or anything else radically different from what they are doing now.

Pat successfully programmed oldies here in Jacksonville, Fl and all I will say is Jax' loss is certainly the Triad's gain. I've been listening to WMQX streaming over the last several weeks and I must say as they say - it's not your father's oldies station. I have no idea how they sounded before Pat arrived but a number of times now I've heard Led Zepplin in the mix. Virtually no tradional oldies station would have the Zep and music like that in rotation.

My guess is they will be around for sometime being either Classic Top 40 or Classic Hits etc. It's possible they could drop the oldies name in their identification but if they are able to successfully attract younger demos with the kind of programming they are doing. If the ratings prove they are on the right track and advertisers are happy, it's possible oldies could remain in their ID. Whatever change lies ahead for WMQX should just be building on what they are doing now - just a hunch.

I wish I could tell you more but my source just would not give up the imformation so I am guessing just like the rest of you. WMAG would appear to be safe but you never know what the home office is thining or will do. WMQX would also appear safe but the station did take a major hit in the spring book and back in late June did revamp their morning show. If you look at ENTERCOM markets it seems the company has flipped several of it's oldies stations recently. As for Simon, if that station did filp would anyone notice? HITS 94. I doubt it and I doubt that Gig will sell the station anytime soon.

Nemenz would have no part of big, corporate radio unless it was the last man standing.

maybe cause he knows his intimidation tactics no longer fly....there's a reason he hasn't been a real player in the GSO market almost a decade

It's one thing to be innovative....it's another to be dumb. Between VBZ and KRR...the classic hits or rock or WHATEVER market is being served. Are you really gonna flip the ONLY oldies or "real" AC station in MAG to fight a 3 way battle with other stations already established in the market????

BUUUUUT, if you have an underperforming stick and are wanting to go after someone....go after KZL. 94.5 the Beat split the difference between Jams and KZL and was starting to succeed ratings-wise. CC couldn't take the chance of someone else goin Spanish and them losing the truckloads of money now being sent to PAI Park....soooo Beat gets booted and FMX gets flipped. The Beat was steadily GAAAAINING on KZL, then KZL had a HUGE spike once the Beat flipped...hhhhmmmmmmm, I wonder what happened to those Beat listeners????

NOOOOOW if a company had deep pockets and a set of basketballs.....go after TQR. Regardless of what side you are on, REAL radio battles are better for everyone....

how long has it been since KZL had another CHR station to compete with ? (and no, not rhythmic CHR) didn't 98.7 KISS FM at one point do CHR? But, i think KZL was enjoying it's "Eagle" phase around that time.

Yes, if I recall correctly from what my friends have told me (I hadn't moved to town at that point), KZL was still The Eagle back when 98.7 was Kiss. I moved just after that flip happened... 98.7 was "The Point", still retaining the WKSI calls, and WKZL was still "The New 107-5 KZL". I don't believe WKZL has ever had any true mainstream CHR competition aside from what little ratings WDCG pulls in the market.

CHR had it's decline in the 1990's, but before 1993, WKZL was CHR and so was 98.7 WKSI. WKSI had flashback weekends for ratings before they finally gave-in to the Country craze and became Kiss Country around 1994 or 1995? It didn't last long. WKZL became the Eagle in an attempt to go after a slightly older audience in 1993 with a little more $$$. WKZL was the first to jump ship when CHR was sinking. They also moved to a new studio in 1993 with the flip. CHR regained popularity around 1998, but that popularity seems to have cooled-off a little. If WKSI would've stayed with the ship through the rough times, the property could've emerged as a strong performer by 1998 and could still be a strong performer now? It's easy to look back and much tougher to guess what the future holds though.

maybe 93.1 will go to that "movin'" thing or 100.3 will go FM Talk.

Around the time that WFMX was due to move to Clemmons and flip, I heard some rumor (I think someone mentioned it on the WFMX thread) about The Buzzard moving to Raleigh. Is there anything to this? Regardless of whether they move or stay put, I don't see 100.3 flipping to FM talk, though; WZTK seems to have a strong showing in both the Triad and the Triangle...

at one point in time, within the fast few years WVBZ has a CP to move their transmitter to the WZTK (FM Talk) tower site. about 10 miles south of burlington up in the hills out there near Snow Camp. but that never came to pass and 'VBZ stayed at the tower right to the south of the new 85 bypass and 220 crossing south of G'Boro.
