A new hybrid AC format with "a secret sauce?"

Preface Note - A new hybrid AC format with "a secret sauce?"

It is founded by one of the founders of Relevant Radio - so I wonder if it will have a "Christian/religious vibe" to it.

Sounds like a pretty wide array of musical selection "from Bob Marley to The Beach Boys, from U2 to the Doobie Brothers, from Jimmy Wayne to Randy Travis and from Steve Miller to Eric Clapton." With plans for additional expansion formats of Oldies and Country in the next two years as well.

I'm interested to hear what it will sound like.

My only question is, is the AC market pretty well saturated already? Does the AC market have room for another hybrid format?

What do other people think?

And no, I have no connection to the company.

See link pasted below for more information.

Allouez-based Sovereign City hopes to meet listeners' needs

Company has 'secret sauce' that will fill void in radio, Giganti says

Green Bay Press-Gazette

... Q. The portion of Sovereign City of which you lead has developed a radio format that will soon be marketed to stations nationwide. What can you tell us about the format?

A. Our first major product rollout for Sovereign City is a new hybrid adult contemporary format that will go into beta testing locally in January 2008 and will be unveiled in national syndication on April 2. While we are keeping most details close to the vest until our launch, I can tell you that the format will "re-introduce" listeners to songs they've heard many times before, but never known quite in the same way. The format is also designed to bring back a little bit of that old-time radio feel that features engaging and entertaining personalities that add to the listener's experience, rather than regurgitating standard liners, and comes complete with an extensive playlist that will feature everything from Bob Marley to The Beach Boys, from U2 to the Doobie Brothers, from Jimmy Wayne to Randy Travis and from Steve Miller to Eric Clapton. But there is a certain "secret sauce" that ties it all together that we believe will fill an audience need that is otherwise being ignored right now.

The format will be delivered to radio stations via satellite and will be available as a 24/7 format, or stations will have the option to take a particular day-part based on their needs. ...

Hmmm... consider. Christian? Marley? Eh, not so much. But hey, whatever pays the bills. ;D

Speaking of Grey FM... it seems to be down. Anyone know the story there?

I tried Home FM too, but they are still in Christmas music mode. I did hear that they are under new management. Wonder if there are any big changes on the way.

I wasn't aware the station was down yesterday, but Live365 has had a history of failing a playlist for DMCA compliance even when the playlist editor says it has passed.

So many Christian stations have used the "Positive" positioner that it's pretty much synonymous with Christian radio. Even KCLB (now K-Love) started out as the "Positive Alternative".

Sister EMF network Air 1 calls itself "The Positive Alternative." Since Air 1 plays some harder sounding acts, I took the slogan as a bigger play on the word "Alternative."

What was WOVMs format prior? talk? preaching? AC?

My understanding is this (but someone else may know better than myself):

WOVM, used to be WLFM (which is now an internet-only radio station), which was a student radio station for Lawrence University, a private, liberal arts college in Appleton, WI (in the Fox Valley area, about a :30 minute drive south of Green Bay, WI, and about 2 hours drive north of Milwaukee, WI). See these links for more info:

WOVM - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relevant_Radio
WLFM - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WLFM

Up through the Summer of 2005:
* During the day - It aired primarily Wisconsin Public Radio - Ideas Network (local and NPR syndicated talk programming),
* At night - Had some limited "student" programming.
* "Great Midwest Trivia Contest" - Was well-known for airing Lawrence's annual trivia contest in Jan or Feb - which has been around for over 40 years and is a pretty big deal - see this link for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Midwest_Trivia_Contest

Summer 2005 - Then it was sold to Relevant Radio (Catholic Talk Radio Network) and began airing Catholic talk.

November 2007 - Sovereign City obtained ownership and began airing Christmas music in anticipation of the new hybrid AC format roll-out.

January 2008 - WOVM new hybrid AC format debuts.

Question - if I made the most scrumptious batch of chocolate cookies you ever tasted, of the finest ingredients, freshest ingredients, would you eat them?

OK, now, suppose I told you that I put in a tiny pinch of doggie poop. Just the very tiniest, not enough to taste or affect any of the other fine ingredients at all. You would never notice it. Would you still eat them?

That is what I think of the hybridization of Christian and secular. There may be nothing wrong with some of the folks on the list. But "Doobie" is slang for a marijuana cigarette. GREAT message for young people, to name yourself after an illegal drug (not to mention the smoking aspect of it). Or The Beach Boys "Oh what she does to me, when she MAKES LOVE TO ME". How many teen pregnancies do you want your station to encourage? And it goes on and on - if you want to run a secular station and put some Christian music on it, that is better than pure secular. But if you take a Christian station, and let unsaved people promote non-Christian message and lifestyles - at least do everybody the courtesy of not dragging the name of Jesus through the mud by calling yourself a Christian station. Adult Christian become Adult Contemporary SECULAR if you pick up this format.

This idea was tried as long ago as the mid '70s when the Southern Baptists produced a very good radio program with Jon Rivers as the host. I'd hear it on WLS Chicago, Sunday nights at 10. This of course was when stations still had to do a certain percentage of news, public affairs, religion, etc. I can't remember the name of the program now but as you might imagine there wasn't alot of CCM around and what there was, wasn't produced very well. These were also the days of the "Jesus People", CCM from the West Coast was being produced that was good. But at this particular time, these type of programs had to play Doobie Brothers, Godspell, Superstar, etc.

The show was Powerline and I believe it is still on. They played secular music and tied it into a Christian message. Later on the SBC came out with another similar show called On Track that carried CCM. In recent years I've heard Powerline also mix in CCM.

Though it didn't show up in his music (he died May 11, 1981), Bob Marley was baptized Nov 4, 1980, at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Kingston, converting to a Christian Rastafarian and taking on the new name Berhane Selassie (according to http//www.thisdayinmusic.com).

Oh brother! Rastafarian anything is NOT Christian!!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rastafarian Haile Selassie as god incarnate? Why not say Ronald McDonald is god - it won't make him god, though. And the whole movement is racist and bigoted against white people - black supremacy to the maximum. TOTAL garbage cult. An excuse to use drugs. BAD stuff. Probably, somewhere along the line, exploiting its followers and extorting money out of them.

Now, you have really piqued my interest...

Could either of you post a link to the website of "Powerline" or "On Track?"

I'd love to take a listen to both of the shows.
