A new low in daytime television

The biggest surprise to me the last time I looked at the soap numbers was just how low As The World Turns has fallen. You read everywhere about low ratings for Guiding Light and even cancellation rumors, but I had no idea As The World Turns was doing almost as poorly.

From the 50s to the late 70s that show got numbers that were almost prime time like. I think it continued to have decent ratings in the 80s and 90s.

How much time does NBC have left with Days anyway?
The current contract runs out in 2009.
There is a promise of performance clause in place though.
It's respectfully adjusted to today's times.

If the ratings fall below a modern expectation, the show can be cancelled before the fall 2008 season.

In the worst case situation though, I'm guessing it'll just get the Passions treatment and end up on Direct tv or something...

As The World Turns was the epitome of "soap opera" for so long. It was #1 from 1958-1971, and through 1978 it stayed in the top 2 or 3 shows (out of 30 or so at the time).

As recently as the 1990s, ATWT was in 2nd place behind Y&R. In the 2000s, it has been as high as 3rd and as low as 8th.

ATWT and GL do miserably in the 12-17 and 18-34 demos. I guess their reputation as "your grandmother's soap" hurts them - however, I have always thought that some of the more groundbreaking stories have happened on these shows. I mean, just yesterday, daytime TV's first-ever gay kiss happened on ATWT!

I might add that money problems are not
confined to the two P&G soaps. For a
perceptive look at why soaps are losing
money and not attracting younger viewers,
go to www.soapcentral.com. There's an
article on the past, present, and future of
soaps that you may find interesting.
Belated, but do you have a firmer link? That article is old now and their site has the worst navigation imaginable.

Unfortunately I don't. However, if you're ever
in a supermarket checkout line, pick up a copy
of "Soap Opera Weekly." They have the ratings
(about two weeks late) for both total audience
and 18-49-year-olds, and you can see just how
bad it is.

Dirty!

If you want to see how far people will go to jump-start an audience..

On As The World Turns this week, we have a murder, a prostitution ring, illicit sex on YouTube (also available on DVD), and the first male-on-male action in daytime history.

I'm no prude, but I'm feeling kind of dirty about it all! One lurid story at a time, please...

This show is a looooooooooooooooooooooooong way from Jeff and Penny in 1958!
