Paco Lopez Moves To Memphis In A Snap

Lopez Joins
ENTERCOM Rhythmic AC WSNA (SNAP! 94.1)/MEMPHIS has added PACO LOPEZ as afternoonst/APD/MD. LOPEZ comes to MEMPHIS from WNEW/NEW YORK where he based his nationally syndicated radio mix show. LOPEZ will be live on WSNA from 3-8p weekday afternoons and will originate his live syndicated mix show FRIDAY nights from MEMPHIS.

LOPEZ has nearly 30 years in radio with stops in NEW YORK CITY, WASHINGTON, DC, HOUSTON, MIAMI, PHOENIX, TAMPA, ORLANDO and JACKSONVILLE.

[NOTE-as reported in AllAccess]

Call me cynical, but...

This guy apparently has a long major market track record. Now, he's coming to Market 49? To a station with no numbers? From what I can gather he lost his last gig due to a format change. I'm just wondering if this is a 'pay the bills' move until another NY or similar gig comes open.

I'm just sayin' we probably aren't witnessing the start of another 20 year Memphis on-air career...

And welcome to the the board "mh" ;)

I agree. If that's a real pedigree, a step DOWN to Memphis is quite a descent.
Methinks whatever this is won't last long.
BTW...
I was in Memphis yesterday afternoon (Mid-day AND early afternoon shifts), and I listened around as much as I could while I was there.
Snap was actually irritating, not unlike the thump of the obnoxious driver who leaves his "rap" going as loud as his distorted "Wal*Mart" system will go while he pumps his gas.
In fairness, I only stayed for two songs.
That was all I could stomach..but, I AM NOT their target demo.
(Who is...really?) ;D

what's the over/under on this one?

;)

is he doing the show live from memphis, or just his mix-show on friday nights?

Man, if there is one thing I can say about this board is that I know I can go here for the love, support, and kindness from others in the same industry.
I mean, when we see a new DJ come in from another market, we welcome him/her with open arms, smiling faces, and that 'give it all you can tiger!' attitude that makes me feel great about working in this market.
Nope, no jaded people here. Not at all. Always the upbeat personalities they all attempt to portray on the air.
...
I wish there was a sarcasm emoticon.

;D There IS one!
Anyway,'Boot...
It has nothing to do with the person.
Something's up when a guy leaves the New York market to come to the Memphis market.
I mean, there are 47 or 48 markets in between.
Nothing against the guy personally, because nobody knows him...but, he either wasn't that big a deal there or he did something that brought his on air status waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down, or he decided to "Get out NOW!" for some reason, to settle in Memphis after being in New York.
I don't care of he was Dees, Casem, or Wink friggin' Martindale, he couldn't save SNAP from the ratings pit it is and has been in.
More likely, he got canned or mad...split and this was the first offer.
When I say he won't be here long...I mean by HIS choice he won't be.
No matter how good he is...it's probably much akin to being the best player on the worst team.
I think that's all anyone really means here...it's not an attack on PACO.

Is he the guy that did that "Puttin' On The Ritz" song from the 80's? No...that guy was "Taco" and he's no longer with us.

Maybe he's a big fan of BBQ?

With 30 years in the business, it's probably safe to say his better days are behind him. You think he came here wanting to be a big fish in a small pond?

That's certainly possible, or it could be semi-retirement...wouldn't be the first time..although if I were in his place and that was the case you'd find me in some market like Panama City or Branson.
