A News Cancels Ottawa newscasts

Effective immediately the 6 and 11 pm newscasts (both weekday and weekends) are cancelled. 30 people have been laid off. Apparently A news was about to overtake CTV during the dinner hour news in audience, so they killed it. Absolutely disgusting. This means that there is only one local voice for news on tv in the nations capital. CBC doesn't really focus much on local news during the 6 pm newscast.

This also means the Ottawa Valley loses their lone news voice.

So, CJOH is the only choice for local news in Ottawa (and area) now. I think that's discusting!

Meanwhile, CTV Toronto thinks it's ok to continue to run CP24 Toronto, even though there will soon be a 24 hr CityNews Toronto station.

If they can't handle two of their *own* stations doing news in pretty much the same market, what makes them think they can handle competing with Toronto's new CityNews channel?

I think it would have been smarter for them to sell CP24 to Rogers (Keeping City and CP24 together) when Rogers bought City.

I also believe Rogers should have bought A channel Ottawa and relaunched it as City TV Ottawa. That would have been good, and the news would still (at least) have 30-60 minutes at 6pm 7 days a week, and the 11pm news would most likely still be present.

There's alot of news filler from Toronto's CityNews that could have aired durring Ottawa's "A" 6pm newscast, like health issues, etc that are not just Toronto related.

Oh well...

Between this, the blowing up of CFPL's morning news and the proposed blowing up of CHWI, CKNX and various repeaters, there are alot of opportunities out there that are being blown up with them. To be really honest, it seems like the monkeys originally hired to write Shakespeare are now running CTV.

Should Global, and City-tv add a local newscast to Ottawa region? I know Global has a studio in Ottawa. Also, CHRO, do they have separate commericals for Prembroke and Ottawa or no more?

Apparently they still do have separate commercials for both stations. Once in a while I'd see ads for Pembroke businesses, but I only saw those during the newscasts. On another note about the recent change, the Mayor of Pembroke and the Member of Parliament are going before the CRTC to demand that A be forced to add the Evening newscasts back, as it was the only source for local news. CTV is pulling the plug on the Pembroke OTA station and another one in the Valley.

City is exactly what "A" Ottawa should have become. If Rogers bought it, I believe very strongly there would still be a 6&11 newscast.
