A Perfect Oldies Scenario

Someone steps forward and offers a big chunk of change to Salem for WMCA.

Re-establishes the "Good Guy" format with reverb and a great oldies format, along with a few classic jocks and some newcomers who are full of life and personality. Use the "yeah yeah" package, and update it a bit.

Before you know it, IBOC hi-fi AM is adopted, and WMCA is now pretty much on par with the city FMs...maybe even a bit better with the southern Conn. coverage that it has and the FMs don't.

How much could WMCA cost?

I know that I am dreaming, but what a nice dream!

forget it

It's AM- nobody's listening for music on AM nor will they.

Nice thought, nice dream but it's just that-only a dream.

But oldies, especially now that CBS-FM is gone, is one of the few music formats that could at least have a fighting chance on AM, especially on a highly-produced, personality-driven, resurected WMCA. WABC and WINS will never go back, they are too profitable under curtrent format. But WMCA is not a player these days....it is just (I presume) Salem's religious teaching station that is not really set up to be a profit center. For the right price, I'll bet that Salem might sell. The already have 970. Also, again.....IBOC AM is just around the corner. Digital AM in high-fi stereo. Aw, c'mon....

Re: forget it

What about the station that played Z-rock ten years ago? Was that at 1490AM?

Are they or someone like that feasible. People over 40 will listen to their music on AM.

I proposed that same scenario and someone knocked it down, talking about coverage.

I live in LA, where the #3 station ia and AM, as well as livingsouth of SF, where the #1 station is AM. Thier talkers, but people DO listen to AM.

No one is saying Oldies'MCA would be the #1 station, but it would give balm to a lot of people alienated by the manner that Infiity switched 'CBS-FM, especially if those listeners let thier dollars do the talking.

I do wonder if the resistance to oldies on AM is based purely on the preferences of the posters. Sorry all Evencence all the time would just be boring.

oh well

Don

That is WZRC on 1480. They are currently Korean with a huge audience and they make some pretty good money. Besides, their signal is very, very limited. It barely makes the 5 burroughs, whereas WMCA gets all the burroughs, lots of Long Island, Jersey and Southern Connecticut.

WMCA is no 50k, but with 5kw way down on 570, it gets out remarkably well in most directions.

forget it

Yes, they did that- and did NOTHING in the ratings.
