A Personal Message to the Jax Radio Community

I suppose the big news over the past week in Massachusetts was the election. Regardless of where a person is politically, one of the major reasons cited for the showing of candidate who came in second was apathy. The critical base in the cities was just not inspired. What does this have to do with radio in our town?

Well, at least for Jacksonville I do see some parallels. As a contributor to this board, I can understand and appreciate that what excites or motivates me may not interest others and that’s OK. Even given that, occasionally others will bring up really good topics that receive little or no response. Our friends in the Panhandle and even Gainesville /Ocala seem to always be motivated enough to post about a wide range of subjects. For Jacksonville, the feeling for a casual observer is that the radio community either doesn’t care, doesn’t want to exert the energy as little will change or is fearful of reprisal by management. Maybe it’s all of it.

While I understand it’s fairly easy to figure out who is who on the boards, there are plenty of occasions where response to certain subjects would not jeopardize employment. Maybe it’s just my nature to see the glass half full. Certainly, I don’t like the state of radio, especially in our market. But gees, I may be an idiot about certain things but it’s rare to get direct response to almost anything whether it’s providing a PPM Report, discussing a life of rock ‘n roll, or questioning business practices of seeing formats die on the vine. Learning is a wondrous thing and we all benefit via communication. I’d like to make something clear – I’m not on some ego trip in seeking a lot of adulation on posts – what turns me on is the health and creativity of radio.

There’s a lot of potential change that could affect AM drive. There’s Elvis Duran – he’s pretty hot in a lot of markets. Is he coming to Jax? Who knows/there’s no subject on it. We saw L&T loose Dallas. One would think there would be a lot of buzz about their future in Jax especially with the Alternative format war. I can certainly go on and on.

Hopefully, behind the scenes, encouraging words are spoken to those in prominent roles in the market who find themselves out of work. My impression is the radio community is cold and indifferent to its own if I were to use the lack of response here as a barometer. As an example, given Bob Schumann’s (sp) exit and his length of time in the market, I would have expected at least a dozen responses. His exit has really gotten to me because that was the last thing I expected – talk about being off guard!

I hope things change for our market. Maybe I’m naïve about some things to include the importance of empowering people to express themselves. I guess I will always be of the opinion that someone will make the time and consideration to listen. Radio is a business for which I believe is worth fighting for and IMHO, you should too.
Sorry for sounding preachy - I just hate apathy.

It would premature to mistake reticence for cold indifference.
As a long-time veteran of this market I have seen the best and worst of the corporatization and subsequent neutering of a vital radio community. I have survived absolutely merciless bloodbaths, been at the top of the ratings and the bottom of them. At one point, I and many of my surviving of my comrades were owned by no fewer than 5 corporations in 5 years, and despite promises of prosperity and ample opportunity, the blood still flowed.
We have been pulverized and raped to a point where our numbers are a scant few, and our survival is based on crafty, almost guerilla-like strategy. Yet we fight on ... each and every day we are forced to assess our listeners wants and needs, and balance them with a sense of community that means so much to us as individuals and residents of THAT community.
So frequently we are pounded by people who think they know exactly how and what would "fix" Jacksonville radio, and I admire their enthusiasm because i have made radio my craft for almost 30 years, much of it in markets WAY bigger than Jacksonville. I stay here and fight because it is NOT a large market ... it is NOT a place of misplaced perception that just because it's a large market means it's GOOD radio. I take in all points of view, but quite frankly, unless you fight the fight I do each and every day to prepare, create, impart, and just plain ol' provide a gentle voice that doesn't insult with vapid dick jokes and locker-room humor, then may I respectfully suggest your distance from the field of play lends a lilt of enchantment to it.
I have seen so many damn good people, many who are friends, get consumed by the beast. I often see them now in places that don't utilize their vast talents, yet they fight on as well.
I HATE to see comrades die, but just because they do, and just because this place needs soldiers every day ... that's why I go to work every day.
Indifference? Hell no. If I were indifferent, I wouldn't go to work tomorrow. Or the next day. Or ever again.
Like the guy on TV says ... See you on the radio.

Brother Bear, first off thank you for the response. You exhibit a passion that I know exists not only for you but for others who are still fortunate to have a career in radio. My intent was not to diminish anything the on-air talent does each and every day. I fully understand – I really do- that the environment and the history is not an easy one. I couldn’t do it even if I had the skills.

I’m sure this happens every day in our market and others. After an on-air shift, if there is an invitation to meet with the boss, there has to be a feeling of dread that maybe “this is it and that was my last show at W***.” It’s a helluva way to operate but I give the radio community credit in that it doesn’t detract them from the quality of their work.

With that said, all I was attempting to do was to illustrate deficiencies in participation on this board for the Jax market in comparison to others. It was not meant as a direct slam to you or others. If it was perceived that way, all I can say is that was not my intent.

I have probably more respect and admiration for those of you who put up the “fight” than anyone may realize. My use of the word “apathy” would have applied if it also referred to overall on-air job performance. That not the case for the local Jax radio community and so I will take responsibility for the broadbrush use of that term. I was letting off steam –not an excuse – but the emotions for those behind and in the sound of the mike are real and fragile. I’ll apologize if I offended anyone.
